Dank!

Staying updated causes me to burn out

I really like Laravel and all its developments. I don't follow the creators that much, but I like to explore new packages and improvements.

However I came to realize it has become a burn out process for me. With the development of AI and Laravel Boost for example, it's so much easier to build something. I can now ask to build a skeleton of a package or PR within minutes. It also gets pretty close to almost perfect, and even takes things into account I didn't think about (tests, docs, repo stuff). I can chat and even discuss if something would be better or go into detail.

All of this does come with a cost. Where I was previously focussed on one thing, I can do multiple things at once. At least I think so, because well I can keep hitting the chatbot/agent with questions and new ideas. It's not all perfect, but neither was my own code and docs.

I don't really know what to do. I don't want AI to take over my brain and skillset. I also want to stay on top of things. However it seems to become pretty much difficult, because it does seem to boost development like crazy. For my work I can now do 5 things for example, and not 2 large tickets max.

My question is pretty much: how do you all stay calm and okay, with all the developments going on? I'm okay with Claude now, but I see a lot of people talking to multiple agents. It has become a crazy and surreal world tbh.

I was very wrong about Cosmic

I'm running Cosmic as my current DE using Secureblue (Fedora Atomic). the reason is that I can easily rebase when needed or switch back to KDE (my previous one).

After some testing and tweaking, I'm just really impressed with all the improvements done over the year. When I first tested Cosmic, it was pretty unstable and unusable, but now most painpoints seems to be fixed! Like the Window Decorations of GTK apps looks much cleaner, and I really like the transparent options and other appearance settings.

I was always a floating window user, but with Cosmic I'm just letting it handle my windows, and even notice I do less closing and minimizing.

Things I do think could be improved:

- System monitor app is really minimal. I would like to see which GPU is in use, but I don't see that option?

- I don't like the icon theme. Kora fits the DE much better. I think some icons by default have inconsistent sizes.

- Clipboard and other applets, could be more KDE like. Like not too many options, but it all feels like work in progress (which I also understand).

I'm still thinking it needs some work. it reminds me of the earlier versions of Gnome. It was working, but it needs more time and things to become better polished.

So sorry for being wrong, and I'll definitely recommend it to users seeking the very cool customization and tiling options. It's just that easy and cool to use!

Best laptops with native Linux support?

I'm looking at Tuxedo, Framework and System76.

Tuxedo seems to be offering the best specs for a very good price: 3k, 32gb, Ryzen 9 ai, etc.

I now have a Lenovo, but it doesn't work that great with my Linux setup.

GitHub has become too expensive

I use GitHub a lot, and most sources I checkout are on it. Some moved to GitLab, and some even Codeberg.

Even when not using GitHub's AI, I still use credits for auto-completion in VSCode, and now even for simple actions/ci. I do use Copilot to help me out when needed (only the premium models are okay, I think the other ones are just a waste of power/bad code quality). So it feels when you need anything good, you're going to have to pay for it (and like a lot! the prices have increased 10x-20x).

Everything has it's price, so that's fine. But 'in the good old days' I bought a PHPStorm lifetime license and have fun coding. Now I cannot even have autocomplete without using credits (like wtf Microsoft?). They promote their actions/workflows, but I have to disable most of them now or only schedule monthly, which isn't good for security either.

I just don't know what to do. I can completely block Copilot/AI in VSCode, but I'll miss so many things that I actually use to speed up coding (like predicting what I want to do next - even when it's wrong, it's sometimes useful to have a basis already done). I also love the auto generate commit message feature. My English sometimes suck, but that solution allows it to be readable and understandable.

Should I move to GitLab? I used Gitea in the past, but self-hosting doesn't work for sharing opensource stuff. What about good editors? PHPStorm is massive, zed is too simple, VSCodium has issues with most extensions .. I just don't know what to do anymore.

Performance distro with hardening/sandboxing?

I'm running Secureblue on my laptop. It works fine as development machine. I don't game, but I would like to have a more snappy/responsive distro with also sandboxing in mind.

I could switch to Bazzite, but the reason for Secureblue was I don't care about any gaming stuff. It needs more be secure, flexible and clean. Secureblue marks all these checkboxes, but still it feels slow sometimes.

Any distro based on Fedora/ublue, that also matches some CachyOS performance tweaks?

Thanks!

Sandboxing apps and SELinux

Is this possible with CachyOS? I know you can install Flatpaks, but doesn't this defeat the purpose of this distro, because those are generic packages?

I've tried running Apparmor, but it was terrible in defense and it broken the system a lot of times. SELinux seems to be nice, but only Fedora seems to offer it?
