Thinking about upgrading from the RF-S 18-150 kit lens to a 24-70 f2.8 and wanted some advice from people who’ve used both.
I shoot on a Canon R10 and recently got the RF 28mm f/2.8. The difference in image quality honestly surprised me the 28mm feels noticeably sharper, cleaner, and better in low light compared to the kit lens.
One of my biggest issues with the 18-150 is softness. A lot of my photos just look kinda soft/muddy across most focal lengths, especially in cloudy or gloomy lighting (I’m in the PNW so that’s basically all the time lol). Low light performance has been frustrating too since the aperture gets pretty slow once you zoom in.
I’m considering moving to a 24-70), but I’m wondering how big of a real-world jump it would be in sharpness, contrast, autofocus consistency, and overall image quality.
For people who upgraded from a kit zoom to a 24-70:
* Did it noticeably change the look/quality of your photos?
* Was the low-light improvement worth it?
* Did you miss the extra reach from 70-150mm?
* Would you recommend sticking with primes + kit lens instead?
I’ll attach a sample pic from the 18-150 too so you can see what I mean by the softness. It was taken at 100mm f6.3 with 1/800 shutter speed and 800iso
Easily my favorite hike for effort-to-reward. Elevation gain is not too bad when u factor in the distance and u get the view of st helens all the way through the hike
Appreciate any feedback 🙏
Instead of just taking pics of the mountain was going for a slightly different take on it
