One of my favorite winter views from the Grand Canyon

One of my favorite winter views from the Grand Canyon

The snow cover changes the character of the canyon. I love how the snow cover helps show the stratification of the canyon.

Park is pretty empty

This is my 8th visit to the Grand Canyon and I was really expecting it to be packed this weekend. It’s pretty deserted by July 4th standards, but I’m not going to complain.

Trip Planning

Hello all.

My buddies and I are coming to visit and i've been looking online trying to begin to somewhat create an itenerary for a day at the Canyon. I'll share what I have so far and I would love for you all to poke holes in it and give advise please. Ok boom, here we go: we would like to be there early enought to catch the sunrise and beat some of the heat as we are understanding that we can visit the South Rim 24/7. We are not sure if we are going to do much "hiking" but we would like to get to some spots that offer great views so that we may take pictures. To get to these spots from the south, how much hiking should we prepare for? If we do approach from the South Rim, is it possible to get to the North Rim on foot?

To you Vets here, will my combat boots I wore in the desert work here or should I just invest in a fresh pair of hiking boots? lol.

Railway advice

My parents are coming to visit next month and we want to do the Railway out of williams to see the grand canyon as my parents are a bit older and can't exactly hike. Are the higher classes or the 1.5 hour bus trip around worth it? We are not very picky to see everything but would like to get around a bit. Also if we do not opt into the higher class that includes lunch, is it best that we bring our own or will there be a stop in town at some point where we can eat? Thank you in advance

Best way to secure a lodge reservation via cancellation?

Hello! First time GC visitor October 16-18. Unfortunately all of the lodges are booked (except a Maswik room that is quite expensive and probably our last choice out of all the lodges). What are the chances we secure a different lodge reservation? Any suggestions on the best time to check back or tips to getting a cancellation?

Memories of the North Rim

My last visit to the North Rim village before the Dragon Bravo Fire. Looking back, I’m grateful I took the time to wander through these historic cabins. I never imagined so much of this area would be gone the following year.

Can someone help me with my itinerary to the North Rim.

Hi all, Im travelling solo from Australia and will land in Las Vegas.

I want to visit 3 places in the North Rim. 1. Point Imperial (sunrise) 2. Cape Royal 3. Bright Angel Point (sunset)

A) Is it possible to visit all 3 locations in one day if I pick up a car rental Vegas and drive to the North Rim and back to Vegas? OR

B) Stay in a hotel in Vegas for 1 day , get rest after a 13+ hour flight then drive to the North Rim

C) Will I need more than one day to explore these places so just look for accomdation along Grand Canyon highway and not drive back to Las Vegas till my flight

I have no clue about road conditions especially at night and acoomdation on the way to the North Rim so local advice would be great.

Was planning for a 3 day Grand Canyon / Page trip but just saw the heat dome is now there.

Would it still be worth going or safer to just cancel?

Anyone been there during high temps and what's your take on it?

Grand Canyon Camping Advice Needed.

Planning on taking the family remote camping to the Grand Canyon. Does anyone have any suggestions on where we could camp at the canyon for scenic views where we would not need to drive after we set up camp?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Grand Canyon seeks public assistance identifying visitor involved in damage to Hopi headpiece

Grand Canyon, Ariz. – Grand Canyon National Park law enforcement rangers are asking for the public’s help identifying an individual involved in damage to a Hopi headpiece inside Desert View Watchtower on Wednesday, June 17.

The incident occurred sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the ground floor of the watchtower, near the fireplace. According to witnesses, a male visitor climbed onto historic handcrafted furniture near the fireplace to take a photo. The furniture tipped beneath him, and the individual reached out to steady himself, striking the Hopi headpiece and causing it to fall. The headpiece broke in two places and was damaged in three others.

After the fall, park staff assisted the visitor with a first aid kit. The visitor and an adult woman believed to be his daughter left the Watchtower shortly afterward, before law enforcement rangers were notified or able to identify them.

The male visitor is described as a Caucasian-American man in his 60s or 70s, approximately 6 feet tall, with a slender build, white or gray hair, clean shaven, and wearing cargo shorts. The woman with him is described as a Caucasian-American woman in her late 30s to 40s, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with an average build and dark hair below shoulder length.

The damaged headpiece, created by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie, has been secured by Grand Canyon National Park museum staff.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, recognizes the individuals described, or has information that could help identify them is asked to contact Grand Canyon National Park law enforcement (e-mail us). The NPS asks that anyone with information contact investigators directly and not post names or personal information in public comments or on social media platforms.

Desert View Watchtower is one of Grand Canyon National Park’s most significant historic and cultural spaces. Visitors are reminded not to climb, sit or stand on historic furnishings, railings, walls or other protected features. These actions can damage irreplaceable park resources and create safety hazards for visitors and staff.

Collected 3 vista spots at the Grand Canyon. What viewpoints would you add?

Collected three more vista spots at the Grand Canyon: Mather Point, Desert View Watchtower, and Hopi Point.

There are definitely more viewpoints worth checking in here. What else should be added to this collection?

10/26 Phantom Ranch Split (repost date corrected sry)

Hi. I booked 10/26 (first post had 10/2 by mistake) a Monday at Phantom Ranch. It says the cabin sleeps 4. I am traveling by myself. Is anyone interested in splitting the room?

Has anyone stayed there. Is it just 2 double bunk beds?

My plan is to hike down South Kaibib , and spend the night in the canyon, and the next day hike up Bright Angel. I wanted to do a shoulder month. I feel that I could do the trip in one day, but I wanted to spend time in the canyon. I would be flying in and didnt want to worry about permits, renting gear, or buying gear and paying to travel with it.

Unfortunately, Im not sure if ill be able to add any meals to my reservation, but I can call and ask, since its still really far out.

Ill probably get to AZ thursday or Friday and spend some time in Sedona.

Im easy going. If people want to hike down at their own time/pace thats fine. I just feel like its a waste to have a 4 person room

For background about me, since Im a random person online.

Im male 40 years old from NJ. I am a physical therapist so I have can show you my active license that required figureprint/background check etc.

I recently climbed the Mantiou incline. I signed up for Towerclimbs of the Willis and Empire State buildings. Next May 2027 I want to climb devils tower. 3 My goal is to reapply for my therapy license in Colorado so I can stay awhile, acclimate, and climb some 14ers. I think their trails are less rugged then New England and will appeal to me more.

Potential cave entrance found near the Arizona National Scenic Trail near Yaki Point.

Hello, I haven’t posted here before but I can be a major geography nerd.

Earlier today we hiked from Yaki point to the south Kaibab trailhead and during the hike we split off the path a little and I found a narrow passageway that goes straight down vertically. We looked inside it and there was no end in sight. Anybody seen this before?

Ima attatch a couple of pics. If someone can confirm it is a cave i would feel real cool.
The picture i took of the entrance makes it look small but its big enough for me to get all the way in and start to scale down. Im like 6’1 and 300 pounds.

Ps: also a pic of me to prove i was there haha

Non-Hikers!

Spouse and I are going to the GC for the first time in July. We are in average shape, but not hikers. We only have 2 days. Where can we go easily/safely for the best use of our time to see the views?

We are staying outside of the park. Any advice on how to navigate around is appreciated!

Wildfire below North Rim

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is responding to the Cliff Spring Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire below the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The fire is currently estimated at 171 acres, is zero percent contained, and is burning in grass, brush, pinyon pine, and juniper.

There are currently no trail or area closures. The park has temporarily paused issuing permits for trips in the Walhalla Plateau area while fire managers continue to evaluate conditions.

Resources assigned include one U.S. Wildland Fire Service engine, one cooperating engine, and a USWFS helicopter. Firefighters are currently using a direct extinguishment strategy through helicopter bucket drops. Because the fire is burning in steep, inaccessible terrain, crews cannot work directly at the fire’s edge and are instead working from safer locations to limit fire spread while reducing unnecessary risk to personnel.

Visitors may see smoke in the area as firefighters continue suppression efforts. Fire activity, weather and operational needs can change rapidly, and visitors should be prepared for changing conditions.

The National Park Service and the USWFS will continue to track conditions and provide updates as information becomes available.
