Windows required to be open during takeoff?

I flew today from Korea to China. Chinese airline. Airport in Korea is dual military/civilian so photos aren't allowed. Flight attendants were making sure every window in the cabin was closed, and the window could not be open until we reached cruising altitude.

This seemed very odd to me. I understand why they did it, because they stated they wanted to prevent pictures of the military airfield. But isn't it unsafe to take off with the windows shut? Usually when I fly in the US or Europe (even in other Asian countries), the FAs make sure the windows are open so in the case of emergency, your eyes are acclimated to the outside lighting. This is especially important at night, I would imagine.

Am I overreacting for thinking this is very odd and unsafe when it comes to safety standards? Just seems to counterintuitive to airplane safety.

Edit: I've flown domestically in Korea from a dual use airport and wasn't required to do this, so is it a thing just for international carriers?

GA Fellowship Payout Schedule

Hi all,

Does anyone know how the payments for fellowships tied to graduate assistant jobs work? Last year my fellowship didn't have a job attached to it so I got a lump sum at the start of each semester, but this year I'm working a GA position as part of the fellowship so I believe it gets paid like a job.

When I can expect my first paycheck? Trying to budget for the next few months so I'd like to know when I can start seeing the money in my bank account lol. I also work a biweekly TA job but that doesn't pay as much as the GA job does so I need to know when I can get this money haha

International to Domestic Transfer at Shanghai Pudong

I have a flight next month going from Busan (Korea) to Chongqing, with a 2.5 hour connection with China Eastern airlines through Shanghai Pudong.

I can't seem to find any information on what the process of transferring is. I know I need to clear immigration, but do I need to go to the baggage claim to pick up my bag and clear security again? Or can I just go from immigration back into the terminal?

Also, would there be the ability for me to get a SIM card during my layover?

Thanks.

Unapproachable Autistic Aura

Partially a rant but if y'all want to give advice I'll take it lol.

I absolutely hate how I unintentionally give off this unapproachable aura. Like no one ever wants to sit next to me in a class (just as an example) because I guess I just look mean. Its probably because I have a permanent RBF but I'm not doing it on purpose, my resting face is just not a smiling one. Even when I sit down next to someone they seem to feel uncomfortable. I can't understand why, I am a clean and nice person but the neurotypicals just sense something off I guess.

I used to be more approachable or try to appear more approachable, but the energy that took to mask was so much that I stopped. Plus it was so awkward and unnatural anyways, I think it made people want to approach me even less lmao.

I know not everyone will like me but it would just be nice to not be constantly be avoided like I have the plague or something. I wish there was a switch so that I could turn off the autism and make it go away because there are some situations where I just want to be able to socialize like a normal person for just a bit 😞

Checked Bag & 20-Hour Layover

First time flying Westjet so I'm not sure what their policy is. But I'm flying ORD-YYC-ICN in a few days and I have a 20 hour layover in Calgary. Ideally, I'd like to have access to my checked bag during that time because I'm kind of nervous about it sitting in the airport overnight, so I'd rather pick it up in Calgary (since I'll be staying in a hotel there overnight anyways) and recheck it to Seoul the next day.

Does Westjet allow you to short check your bags if you have a long layover? I know some airlines do and some airlines don't, so I'm curious if anyone else has experience with this on Westjet and how likely it is for the agent in Chicago to let me short check my bag to Calgary.

Thanks!
