My ramblings - Happy B-Day, OST!

I have so many thoughts on this album and the words needed release, so the content below is my OST mind-dump. Thanks for listening : )

It’s hard to believe One Simple Trick (OST) is already plunging its proverbial hands into the birthday smash cake! The baby comparisons end there, though. This album has the maturity and polish of a band who’s well into their third or fourth album and is chugging along like a well-oiled machine.

I had lofty expectations for OST - I’m talking Lobster Nest-high and then some. OST took those expectations and launched them into the stratosphere. Will really seems to have found his vocal range “sweet spot”, embracing his lower end to create full, warm tones. I’m especially partial to this register in “Scoundrels”, and OST hits you with it right away in the opening notes of “Baptism”. His deeper tone perfectly accentuates the dark, haunting vibe of the album.

I’m a FOOL for a fat, thumping bass, and Ash’s groovy, front-loaded basslines often take the spotlight here, driving the melody home like a freight train on songs like “Fatal” and “Monochrome”, which, non-coincidentally, happen to be 2 of my 3 OST favorites. The bass on this album is justsodamncrazyunbelievably scream-worthy. Ash (and the rest of the boys) do NOT get proper accolades for technical abilities. I’d throw this guy a ticker tape parade if I could. The Pebble Brain Trust has listened to me go on about Ash’s
skills to no end - thanks for dealing with me, guys.

Ash and Mark hold down OST’s bottom end with a precise, driving cohesiveness. They create the skeleton that supports the flesh of each track, and there are really special moments on the album where the flesh is stripped back to expose the rhythm-section skeleton. The opening of “Pay & Display” is one of my favorite examples - the bass/drum combo piqued my interest from the get-go.  Lovejoy uses this masterfully on OST to create an anxious tension or a precarious pause mid-song, or put an exclamation point on the beginning or end of a track. Sometimes it’s only the guitars that are dropped, for example, nearly the entire refrain of “With Rob As My Witness”, and I really dig the extra punch it lends to Will’s short, crisp lyrics.

Speaking of Mark, I know we all appreciate his dependable, driving beats (see: “Fatal”), and how he also really lets it fly (also see: “Fatal” and the crescendo of “Monochrome”). Mark really is the backbone of Lovejoy’s sound, pulling every element together and tying it all up with a reliable yet relentless ribbon.
Last, but clearly not least, my glass is raised to Joe’s absolutely spot-on guitars. Each chord and note from the “twinkly mum guitar” appears to be placed very precisely and strategically, with the understanding that more is not always better. Joe is a master at inserting the perfect riff at the perfect time for maximum effect.

Take “Baptism”, for example. This song is a wildfire. It begins a bit chilly with Will’s signature lush, vivid imagery. He begins with a nod to T.S. Eliot that fits perfectly (“It was a cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year”), and follows that up with “and now the sordid want to get in”, in which I always picture people freezing outside in the snow, desperately banging at the doors for warmth and shelter. The chorus escalates this fire to a measured yet steady burn, and then the fire really starts to run in the bridge, finally blazing completely out of control in the outro. Joe’s guitar work complements this structure, giving the track room to breathe in the beginning, building up to math rock-esque riffs that are almost foreboding, and ending with a powerful sound to back up Will and, well, himself. Joe’s vocals in the outro of “Baptism” and other parts of OST (“Foxholes”, “Monochrome”, “Scoundrels”, for example), add another beautiful layer of texture to the album. He shreds. He sings. He does tree surgery. Is there anything this man can’t do?

One Simple Trick is crammed with a level of confidence and precision that seems well beyond its years. With this album, Lovejoy has evolved from a quirky little indie band into a group that moonlights as post-punk revival but still knows how to have a hell of a good time, no matter the lyrical content. It feels like every second of One Simple Trick has been placed with the utmost care and intention, but it’s not contrived. It’s actually quite the opposite - this album feels genuine and true to themselves. Thank you, Lovejoy, for One Simple Trick.

Four Songs to Intro Lovejoy?

I’ve got a hypothetical question for everyone while we wait for further Lovejoy news: If you had to choose four songs to introduce someone to Lovejoy, what would they be?

My answer is With Rob As My Witness, Deathbox, Curse These Metal Hands, and The Vows. I chose this group because together they create a pretty well-rounded example of the diversity of Lovejoy’s sound.

Looking forward to hearing your list!

SO METAL

The Vows. SO focking METAL. Mark deffo had a hand in this (Ash too!). I am dying. Dead. Dead and gone and died and came back to life and now I died again.

Snake Oil really rocks too. Oof. Just so so good. Chef’s kiss to the umpteenth degree.

I want to run around outside screaming out of sheer excitement over this entire EP, but it’s 12:15 am, so prolly not…

Guys - you knocked it put of the park and hit the windshield of the car in the furthest parking spot at the stadium. Thank you for being the music boys. 🖤

No $ = no gig?

Anyone not able to go to the Brighton gig tomorrow night due to ticket costs? DM me…I can’t go because I’m in the US, but I’d love to pay it forward so someone else can go 🖤

Don’t miss this - go to the show 🖤

The immense amount of regret I had when I didn’t go to Pioneertown…😭 My friends in attendance blew up my phone that night with tons of Lovejoy selfie photos - it was insane. The Brighton Electric gig on Saturday is half the size of the Pioneertown show, and I can’t imagine the thrill of seeing my favorite artist in such a small setting. The moral of my story is - don’t be August 2023 me wishing I’d went after all. If you can find a way to attend this gig - DO.IT. You’ll never regret it. 🫶🏻

...this weird band named Ouijaboard Madness....

...played at Brighton Electric on August 11, 2022, which is also the venue for Lovejoy's live stream this weekend. Coincidence or conspiracy? Either way, sharing the rad promo graphic from what was OM's first (and last) gig because I love the details. Lamp with a sock - BBQ grill - dearly departed Jim Jams.

More goodies from the show at https://lovejoy.fandom.com/wiki/Pseudonymous_Gigs if you're interested ❤️

Lore for STO Title?

I’m really curious about Second To One’s title origins. Who came up with it? Was it created before or after the One Simple Trick title? Did Ash find it on a Post-It between the pages of a book? Perhaps it was written at the bottom of Joe’s beer mug? Or maybe Mark’s cats spelled it out in the litter box with doody? Did Will climb Mt. Sinai and receive the title from a talking burning bush?

Anyways - you get my drift - is there any info out there that maybe I’ve missed? It’s so clever and I require information on who came up with it. 🖤

Which song is it for you?

Which of the three unheard (mostly) songs from STO are you most excited to hearing in its entirety?

For me, it has to be Snake Oil. If it’s an Ash favorite, there must be a great bass line and it has to rock.

Tell me yours! 🙂

OK, maybe I believe Will now - Alphabet

On our newly dropped podcast episode, Lesley, Dave, and I were pondering Will's insistence that "Alphabet" was the title from conception, and we, the fans, turned it into "Wasted Summer". Most normal bands would have indeed named it "Wasted Summer", but we all know this band isn't normal : )

Anyways, I had forgotten that my study packet/setlist from RFT 2024 had the word "Alphabet" in the word search, hence I am formally walking back my statement on the pod that Will is likely "full of shit".

Earth-shattering stuff, I know....

Are we getting FIVE - count them - FIVE songs?…

Wester Somnar is a happy surprise! What does this mean for Alphabet? Is there a fifth song? In Will’s first stream back, he’s asked how many songs will be on the EP. He responds “Four. Smiley face” and something like “it’ll all make sense in time”. 🤔🤔🤔
(ETA: the fifth song in this theory would be Wasted Summer or Alphabet)

SUMMER!! Who’s excited?!

Party people - who else is insanely excited about the forthcoming Lovejoy summer?! We know the EP is coming with at least 4 new songs ⭐️ - is the long-awaited UK tour announcement hot on the EP’s heels? Perhaps a little surprise or two if we’re really lucky? 🤞🏻 Hype train incoming 🚂
