Does Bunnings know how BAD their site is on mobile?

I cannot get around the Bunnings app with any speed on my phone. I'm usually waiting 5-10 seconds, not for the page to download, but for all the scripts and junk it runs to stop hammering my processor.

Even on PC, the Bunnings website gobbles memory the moment you open it, and CPU starts to spin once you're about 15 links in.

In short, the website has so much junk crammed into it, my phones cannot run it.

I have tried an iPhone 13 and an Asus ROG Phone 8. The Asus can run the site slowly, with the turbo gaming mode enabled. Without that, it's about 30 seconds to load search results and be able to scroll halfway before needing to wait another 30 seconds to load the second half of the page.

Brave browser seems to be able to run faster than Chrome on Android because it's blocking a lot of telemetry scripts.

This has been the case for about 3 years now. It has only gotten worse.

Introducing GSCommand - A Command Line Builder

Hey r/linux_gaming, I've been working for the past month on a rewrite of the Gamescope Command Builder, and have finally finished a working version that is basic feature-complete, completed without AI assistance.

GSCommand is a web utility that breaks down complex program arguments, values and env values into a simple form. This allows anyone with surface knowledge of the app to build a complex command line with all the options laid out.

This version improves on the previous iteration in several ways:

  • Built using React. Code maintenance is much simpler... in some ways.
  • Can host multiple different versions of Gamescope builders, to target the version that you are running
  • Can host multiple different apps, so long as one is willing to spend the time to build the forms and particles needed to build it.
  • Direct click-to-copy presets
  • No more breaking changes to presets. They can exist alongside future and past versions of the app your presets are for.
  • Built without AI. Every single line of code was written by a human. Also inspected and tested by that same human, so, take that how you will. I am totally unsupervised, forced to work out how to make deep clones without Immer or any other helper for two hours cos I don't wanna install more modules dammit.
  • Source code available on Gitlab

The webpage is still https://gscommand.set-l.space/

If you had presets saved for the old version of Gamescope Command Builder, your presets should still work in the new version, please ping me if they don't work. They're read-only. You won't be able to edit them.

This is as of posting v0.1.0. I'll be tagging the SHA once I figure out how to do that in Gitlab. Some updates will come soon, probably a lot of cleanup and busywork to get the Gitlab and builders going. No doubt there's something I'm missing in the app that will totally embarrass me.

It's barebones, just enough to build working Gamescope command lines, but I'm hoping some enthusiastic people can help out with building the forms more more apps. Please leave suggestions (or bugs) if you have any, either here or on Gitlab!

Is it worth jumping from Arch to CachyOS?

I've been running Arch Linux for about a decade now, desktop, laptop, server, VM, everywhere I needed a solid Linux distro.

I'm starting to introduce CachyOS alternative package, though, including the kernel and proton to get better gaming performance from my hybrid handheld/eGPU workstation laptop. On integrated GPU with low power processors, every bit helps.

The biggest thing annoying me is the constant requirement to compile my kernel every update. It's lengthy, means my computer is severely limited whilst building, and takes a long time.

Is this also required on CachyOS? Is there significant changes to my experience on CachyOS to Arch? What am I getting myself into running a conversion or reinstallation?

I consider my skill to be pretty high in Linux, I'm coming up on two decades of experience and my knees are starting to hurt, but I figure asking the community if the effort is worth it is better than potentially wasting my entire weekend.

I made a tool that assists with generating GameScope command lines for Steam

Tool: https://gscommand.set-l.space/

(Update: thanks for the great feedback from the community. This was initially just intended to be a tool for my convenience, but with suggestions from comments I am continuing to expand the functionality of this app!)

(Update 2: Seeing as there's a combined discontent with the use of AI, a bunch of new enhancement requests and this thing is unmaintainable as it is, I've decided to work on a less-awful implementation that does the same thing, but is also a lot easier to maintain (new commands and such). This V2 will be entirely written in Kate editor like it's 2019 all over again).

Simple webpage where you can set common options to get a ready-to-paste output for setting up Gamescope.

Made after a lot of trouble remembering the w/W and h/H order.

You can also save presets to browser cache, and export/backup your list.

Have fun!

Winter in the courtyard sucks!

Hi, I posted back in Summer time my little back courtyard setup.

It's now approaching Winter and already I'm getting desperate to keep above the shadow line. This photo is at 4pm. Previously I had sun until about 6pm.

There's almost no sun on the ground anymore. I'm considering consolidating four panels onto the garage roof, as that will get about two to three hours of uninterrupted sunlight, and then use one or two higher-efficiency panels (400W?) on a second MPPT in the back corner there to stay above float until the sun hits the roofline behind me.

Not trying to be "cost effective" here, just having fun. Where I am, I can get the extra panels for about $70 each on second hand and oversupply dumps on marketplace.

If that doesn't work, I'll probably just pack the lot into the garage over winter and just keep the battery topped up off mains for backup power.
