My go bag

What else do I need? It’s a maxpedition bag that’s double sided and about 6-7 inches tall. A few knives, a pencil, a ruler, some sand paper, a couple of bandaids, a chopstick (snowman noses), a strop, and a break tip box cutter. Some blocks of wood, some precut, and a glove. The strop is about 5.5 inches of wooden yardstick and a leather belt contact cemented together.

Next up…How do I make this better from here?

Ok, it will eventually get painted up like another Santa. Any advice on how to remove the “squareness”. I’m not exactly sure what to do to get better definition? Maybe?

Next attempt

Lots to learn to fix here. It always feels like I have so much material to remove and yet I can’t always tell where to do it. Sometimes it’s like I am one cut away from ruin. I’ll post all of these Christmas ones again once I try to paint them. I’m trying to get a handful of similar carvings done so I can paint them all with similar colors all at once.

My first carvings

I’m very excited. I know it’s clearly beginner stuff, but it’s fitting what I want to be able to eventually do better. I want to focus on Christmas stuff as I’m about 10 years away from retirement. I’m thinking eventually I’ll become Santa Claus. One day, I want to hand a carving to a kid who’s excited to see the real Santa. I’ll learn to paint as well eventually.

Travel bag

Look like the last bag recommendation request was about 3 years ago or so. I’m looking to carry a rough out, a detail, and a gouge. Maybe a small strop (I expect I’ll need to make one out of an old belt). A small chunk of compound for the strop, and enough room for a few small blocks of wood ( a couple of 1x1x6) roughly. Does anybody pack similarly, and what size (liter?) bag do you carry? What else am I missing?
