My thoughts on Supergirl and much of the commentary I'm seeing online
Context: I am a lifelong comic book fan, though I'm usually not super excited about comic book movies nowadays. I do spend a lot of my time thinking about and watching movies. As far as recent-ish CBMs, I did really enjoy The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and Superman.
I saw Supergirl last night and enjoyed it. I thought the performances were great (Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa were both excellent), the action was entertaining, and I had fun overall.
I did think the story was a bit by-the-numbers for my tastes (though if it's sticking close to its source material, that can't be helped much), but I can say the same for few dozen of the comic books on my shelves at home. I'm not expecting most CBMs to be like Tenet or Primer.
I did have some major issues with the editing of this movie, especially in the first half. I found several of the cuts confusing, and it almost seemed as if the filmmakers felt like we were going to stop watching the movie and look down at our phones if they didn't cut fast enough. I wanted to "live" in some of the moments of the scenes more, which I was able to do a lot more in the second half of the film. In general, the first half of the movie felt hard to engage with.
Overall, I would probably put Supergirl in the middle of the pack for CBMs I've seen in the last decade or so.
There are obviously a lot of strong reactions in this sub (and others) about how the movie is being perceived. Personally, I think it's reasonable that 1 out of every 2 critics didn't care for the movie (i.e. the RT Tomatometer); that's fine. I will say that I have historically been pretty surprised at how much critics have enjoyed some of the CBMs I thought were pretty horrendous (i.e. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Black Adam were rotten, but I'm still surprised by how many critics liked them, Avengers: Age of Ultron sits at 75%, which I thought it was an extremely mediocre movie [though it probably warrants a rewatch at this point]).
I've seen people pointing out all the 1-star reviews for Supergirl on IMDB. I'm going to just assume a lot of those are from a.) extremely grumpy people that are not much fun to be around or b.) incels (which the internet is seemingly perpetually infested with). I suppose it's subjective, but a 1-star movie to me is one that fails on every level, something like The Room.
People are also talking a lot about the B- Cinemascore. I've never paid too much attention to these scores, though the fact that Supergirl is nestled in with Howard the Duck and Hulk leads me to believe the bar has been raised in our jaded, post-COVID superhero movie-fatigued society (plus there's always the incel factor).
Anyway - making a movie is an incredibly complex process with a lot of business, politics, and execution that needs to go right (I'd highly recommend the podcast What Went Wrong for some insight into this). Supergirl had some serious issues, but I'm glad I saw it.
DnD Vs. FL
In my opinion Florida is more fun then DnD because it is more exploring then fighting. It also is faster so that's a plus. You need to play on a hexagonal pattern with each hex showing the biome. Some parts are actually un-reachable so you can have limits. Remember this is just my opinion. (But we don't talk about Dragonbane [aka Delaware]. Not the 3rd brother.)
