5/3/3 question

Hey all - based on feedback from this sub on a prior post, I’m considering weaning night feeds using the 5/3/3 method.

My question for this sub: what happens if LO is in the middle of crying while they hit the 5-hour mark?

For example, let’s say I feed LO at 7pm, and he falls asleep at 7:30. This means I would not LO until after 12am (5 hours after his last feed).

If LO starts crying at 11:30pm, and he is still crying after 12am, what do you do? Do you go in and feed, or do you wait for LO to settle so he doesn’t get “rewarded” for half an hour of crying?

Thanks in advance!

2 hours of crying in the middle of the night

Hello friends! Baby is 4.5 months old*, and we started sleep training two nights ago using the ABCs of Sleep method with total extinction (check-ins would definitely escalate things for our LO). Our current plan is:

  1. Bedtime around 7:30pm
  2. Dream feed of 5oz around 10:30pm. If baby happens to be awake then, we wait until he’s been asleep again for 5-10 minutes before feeding.
  3. Nursing feed around 3:30am, with the same rule - if he’s awake, wait until he’s back asleep for 5-10 minutes before feeding.
  4. If he’s awake after 6am, we start the day.

The first night went about as expected. He woke up a few times, but went to sleep after 20-30 mins of crying.

Last night was different. He went down at 7:30 with zero crying (yay!), but then woke at 2am and cried for almost two hours (until about 3:55am), after which he fell asleep. I nursed him at 4:10am for about 6 minutes - he was asleep during the feed and didn’t seem interested in eating more.

To be honest, I don't feel good about letting him cry for 2 hours overnight. I wish I had gone in and fed him at 3:15 or 3:30, but I didn't want to break the "don't feed unless asleep" rule.

For those who’ve done this: does 2 hours in the middle of the night sound like a normal amount of protesting, or does it sound more like genuine hunger? For additional context, I’m pretty sure he ate well during the day - around 28oz plus ~15 minutes of nursing.

*Pediatrician said he was ready for sleep training (and we're desperate for some sleep), so we started a little earlier than TCB recommends.

Second-guessing the plan after night 2

Hello friends! Baby is 4.5 months old, and we started sleep training two nights ago using the TCB method with total extinction (check-ins would definitely escalate things for our LO).

Last night was a little different. He went down at 7:30 with zero crying (yay!), but then woke at 2am and cried for almost two hours (until about 3:55am), after which he fell asleep. I nursed him at 4:10am for about 6 minutes - he was asleep during the feed and didn’t seem interested in eating more.

He woke up again at 5:30, cried for 10ish minutes before going back to sleep.

The whole time between 2 and 4am, I kept wondering whether he might actually be hungry. But the TCB guidance is to avoid feeding in response to crying, so we waited until he was asleep again before offering food.

A nearly 2-hour stretch of crying in the middle of the night really had me second-guessing the plan. For those who’ve done this: does that sound like a normal amount of protesting, or does it sound more like genuine hunger? For context, I’m pretty sure he ate well during the day - around 28oz plus ~15 minutes of nursing - but I still wasn’t sure.

Would you recommend any modifications to the above plan? Thanks in advance!

Should we use Jacky with ABCs of Sleep?

Baby still has a strong Moro reflex. Baby can extend his naps and total time asleep by using a suit similar to Jacky, which stifles his Moro reflex. We're starting ABCs of Sleep soon. Should we use Jacky (or a similar suit) for ABCs of Sleep while he still has his strong Moro reflex, or is the idea to remove all crutches (including Jacky) so baby can self-soothe?

Thank you!

ABCs of sleep with no pop-ins?

Hello,

We’re planning to follow the ABCs of sleep but we’re hoping to do it without pop-ins (ie, total rather than graduated extinction). Has anyone done this with success? If so, please do share your experience. Thank you!

Baby hasn’t slept well since un– swaddling a month ago

Baby is 4 months and still has a pretty strong Moro reflex. We stopped swaddling about a month ago and haven’t had a good night’s sleep since. A few nights ago, we swaddled him (strapped in a Snoo for safety) out of desperation, and he got a 6.5-hour stretch. We went back to un-swaddling and he’s back to waking every 2-2.5 hours.

If we went back to swaddling, we might be able to stretch his sleep, but I am concerned for safety reasons, even though he isn’t really able to roll yet. Any words of advice or encouragement?

Hi friends! LO is about to hit 4 months and he is sleep regressing HARD. We’re looking to Ferberize in the next few weeks.

My question: how do you handle night wakings? Let’s say he falls asleep at 8pm after an hour of crying, and then wakes up at 12… what do you do then? Feed, and then let him cry it out again?

Thanks in advance :)
