La Marzocco Micra BbW + Mahlkönig E64 WS GbS: my Shotdeck workflow

La Marzocco Micra BBW + GbW/GbS with Mahlkönig E64 WS

I’ve added Mahlkönig E64 WS GbS support to my espresso-shotdeck brew by weight, connecting the grinder to my La Marzocco Micra setup. The video shows the full workflow.

Shotdeck now goes beyond brew by weight (BbW) on the La Marzocco Micra. It also sends brew data to the Mahlkönig E64 WS for GbS, allowing the grinder to adjust its burr spacing for the next shot based on the recipe’s target brew time.

Here’s the flow:

  1. Grind the coffee using grind by weight.
  2. Press the E64 WS button to arm GbS.
  3. WDT, tamp, and start brewing on the Micra.
  4. Shotdeck stops the machine when the Lunar reaches the target weight.
  5. Shotdeck sends the shot data to the grinder, which adjusts the grind setting for the next shot.

I still dial in by taste. Espresso is subjective, and hitting an exact weight and time doesn’t automatically mean you’ll enjoy the result. I use those numbers as reference points while experimenting. Once I find a recipe I like, this setup helps me reproduce it consistently.

Espresso-shotdeck also saves different coffee profiles, including target weight, target brew time, brew temperature, and pre-brewing settings. That’s handy when switching between beans or revisiting a coffee.

Each shot is logged so I can compare results later, look for patterns, and investigate signs of possible channeling. I’m using an Acaia Lunar in the video, but Shotdeck supports other compatible Bluetooth scales too.

Dialing in Vee’s Monsooned Malabar with Shotdeck Brew-By-Weight on LM Micra

I’m currently dialing in a new bag: Vee’s ESPRESSO d’ORO GRANDE – Monsooned Malabar (Vee’s is a coffee roaster in Munich).

The beans go through the monsooning process, which lowers the acidity and gives the coffee a mellow, full-bodied profile with chocolate and nut notes + a very silky crema.

For this shot, I used 14 g in and got 36 g out—roughly a 1:2.6 ratio. Total extraction time was 46 seconds, including 1.5 seconds pre-brew on and 4 seconds off. I’m still working toward the sweet spot, but Shotdeck is making the process much more deliberate: I can keep each shot, timing, and tasting impression together instead of guessing what changed from one attempt to the next.

I’ve also added support like the new La Marzocco Linea Mini R quick-paddle flush behavior in Shotdeck: move the paddle quickly and the machine flushes. It’s a small detail, but it makes using and the workflow feel much more complete.

About Shotdeck: it’s a brew-by-weight control box that also supports brew-by-time, built to make espresso dial-ins more repeatable. It connects to the Acaia Lunar, Pyxis, Pearl, and Umbra; the Bookoo Mini and Ultra; and the Felicita Arc—bringing extraction data and tasting notes together in one place. Profiles with target-weight and boiler-temperature settings can be saved and selected quickly. It has been tested and works perfectly on La Marzocco Micra and Mini-R.

It’s way too hot for a regular espresso… so I tried this instead

With the temperatures we’re having in Germany right now, I wanted something cold.

I ended up making an affogato with vanilla ice cream, a generous amount of roughly chopped pistachios, and pistachio cream around the inside of the cup before pulling the shot.

I honestly didn’t expect it to be this good. Definitely going to make this again.

3 years later, still loving this brew-by-weight setup

A quick shot from my daily setup.

This is my Espresso-Shotdeck controller running on a Linea Micra with an Acaia Lunar. I start the shot with the paddle as usual, then the controller handles the rest and stops the extraction automatically at the target weight.

36.0g target, 36.0g +/- 0.1g in the cup after learning.

It also talks to the La Marzocco cloud, so I can manage standby, power, and boiler temperature settings directly from my profiles.

I’ve been using and further developing it for around 3 years now and still enjoy it every single day.

Built my own brew-by-weight control box 3 years ago, hooks up to my Acaia Lunar and La Marzocco Linea Micra. Still gets me every single morning. Some things just never get old.
