Ather 450X Gen 3 Battery Failure After Washing – ₹35,000–₹40,000 Replacement Cost Despite 99% SOH! Need Community Opinions.
Hi Everyone,
I'm an Ather 450X Gen 3 owner since September 2022, and my scooter has clocked approximately 37,000 km. I've been using it regularly and have always ensured timely servicing and proper maintenance.
However, I recently experienced a serious issue that has left me questioning the reliability of electric vehicles and the after-sales support provided by Ather.
What exactly happened?
Two days ago, I got my scooter washed at a washing centre, as I've done several times before without any issues.
After washing, I rode approximately 4–5 km, and suddenly, my scooter completely shut down and became unresponsive. I tried performing a hard reset multiple times, but it wouldn't turn ON.
I took it to an authorised Ather service centre for diagnosis.
What did the service centre find?
After inspecting my scooter, the technicians informed me that the Battery Management System (BMS) had reported the following error:
"BMS Overtemperature in Discharge Protection – BOTD"
The service centre escalated the issue to Ather, and after two days, the company reportedly concluded that the battery was damaged and needed complete replacement.
Here's where things become concerning:
- Battery replacement cost: ₹35,000–₹40,000.
- Warranty: Ather says my battery is no longer covered under warranty.
- Battery State of Health (SOH): Reportedly 99%, according to the available diagnostic information.
- Replacement battery: I have been informed that the replacement would be a refurbished/previously used battery rather than a brand-new one.
- Old battery: The company would take back my existing battery without offering any compensation or exchange value.
My biggest concerns
1. Why did the battery fail immediately after washing?
I've washed my scooter multiple times over the past four years without facing any issues. This incident occurred shortly after washing, which raises questions about whether moisture or water ingress could have triggered the failure.
I understand that the timing alone doesn't prove water damage, but shouldn't the exact root cause be investigated before recommending such an expensive replacement?
2. Why replace the entire battery for a BMS-related error?
If the diagnostic error is related to BMS overtemperature protection, is replacing the entire battery really the only solution? Could it be an issue with the BMS, temperature sensors, connectors, or another component?
3. What about the 99% battery SOH?
If the battery's reported State of Health is 99%, how can the complete battery pack suddenly become unusable? I understand SOH doesn't necessarily indicate that every battery component is functioning correctly, but I would expect a detailed technical explanation before accepting a ₹40,000 replacement.
4. Why should customers pay such a high amount for a refurbished battery?
Spending ₹35,000–₹40,000 on a refurbished battery, while surrendering my existing battery without any compensation, seems extremely concerning from a consumer's perspective.
5. Is long-term EV ownership financially sustainable in India?
We purchase EVs expecting lower running costs, reduced maintenance, and long-term savings. But if a major component fails outside warranty and requires such an expensive replacement, it raises serious questions about the actual cost of ownership.
When replacement components are available only through the manufacturer and independent repair options are limited, customers are left with very little choice.
I genuinely need the community's opinions.
- Has anyone experienced a similar BOTD/BMS overtemperature error on an Ather scooter?
- Can washing or water ingress potentially trigger this issue?
- Is complete battery replacement technically necessary, or are BMS-related faults sometimes repairable?
- Has anyone successfully escalated a similar issue to Ather and received a repair, goodwill replacement, or discount?
- Is ₹35,000–₹40,000 reasonable for a refurbished replacement battery?
I'm not against electric vehicles or Ather as a brand. But as someone who invested their hard-earned money in an EV and maintained it regularly, I expect better transparency, proper technical explanations, and reasonable repair solutions.
A scooter with 37,000 km on the odometer shouldn't automatically become a major financial burden simply because its battery warranty has expired.
Would you spend ₹40,000 to replace the battery on a four-year-old electric scooter, or would you consider moving away from EVs altogether?
Looking forward to hearing your experiences, technical insights, and genuine suggestions.
