My family and I are visiting Georgia in September and are thinking of renting a car. We’re planning on driving from Batumi to Tbilisi, stopping at Akhaltsikhe and Gori for overnight stays. I’ve seen/heard that the road from Batumi to Akhaltsikhe is unpaved and/or dangerous, but it looks like they’ve started paving most of it recently.

Is it a safe road to drive on in September? Also, what kind of vehicle should we rent?

Reccomendations on things to see along the way welcome as well!
