Hi everyone,

I'm not sure where to post, but here it goes. I’m in my early 20s, and I’ve been suffering from chronic hives for over ten years now, ever since I was a kid. Usually, I get them 2 to 3 times a week, mostly from my shoulders down.

Growing up with this in the Philippines was tricky. It wasn't that my parents couldn't afford to take me to a specialist - they definitely could have-but like most people here, they just automatically assumed it was a standard food allergy. They would constantly try to figure out what "trigger food" I ate, even though for the life of me, I would still get breakouts without eating anything unusual at all. Because CIU is so unheard of here, everyone just defaults to blaming a meal.

I finally decided to take matters into my own hands and invest in a proper specialist consultation recently because of my new job. Appearance matters a lot in my line of work, and let's face it, having a visible rash isn't always seen as "presentable" in professional or social settings here. The doctor confirmed what I suspected and told me I likely have Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (CIU), chronic hives with no known daily cause.

During my consult, I made sure to tell the doctor about a strange pattern I’ve noticed since childhood: whenever I took an over-the-counter allergy pill (antihistamine), my hives actually seemed to get much worse. Because of that, I always avoided them unless the itching was completely unbearable.

To try and treat the CIU, my doctor prescribed a daily antihistamine for two weeks straight. Here is what happened:

  • Week 1: Instead of getting hives every few days, I had severe rashes every single day of the week. There were zero clear days.
  • Week 2: I updated my doctor, so they added steroids to my prescription to calm the skin down. Sadly, it didn't help at all. Even at night when my skin usually settles, the hives stayed active. I now wake up with them fully flared.

The most worrying part is that my hives have spread. Before starting these medications, the rash never went above my shoulders. Now, for the first time in my life, they are all over my neck and my face.

My doctors told me it’s highly unlikely that the medication is causing this, because these specific drugs are supposed to stop rashes, not make them worse. I totally respect my medical team and know they want to help me find relief, but my body is reacting so strongly.

Since CIU doesn't seem very common here in the PH, I feel a bit lost. Have any fellow Pinoys with CIU experienced anything like this? Is it actually possible for allergy pills or standard treatments to turn into a trigger and make a flare-up worse?

Would really appreciate any insights or shared experiences. Thank you so much!

Can antihistamines make Chronic Hives even WORSE?

Hi everyone,

I’m in my late 20s and I’ve been dealing with chronic hives for over a decade, stretching back to my childhood. Typically, I get them about 2 to 3 times a week, usually from the shoulders down.

Because I’m now established in my career and my new job requires me to look presentable even tho it doesn't really compromise my ability to work, I finally decided to invest in a proper specialist consultation. Based on my history, the doctor mentioned I likely have Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (CIU).

During the checkup, I made sure to mention a weird pattern I’ve noticed since childhood: whenever I took an over-the-counter antihistamine, my wheals and rashes always seemed to get worse. Because of that, I’ve historically avoided them unless the itching was absolutely unbearable.

To tackle the CIU, my doctor prescribed a continuous 2-week course of antihistamines. Here is how my timeline went:

  • Week 1 (Antihistamines): Instead of my usual breakout every few days, I had severe rashes completely non-stop for the entire week. There were zero "clear" days.
  • Week 2 (Steroids added): After updating my doctor, I was prescribed steroids to help calm the flare. Unfortunately, it didn't go down at all. Even during sleep—when my skin usually calms down—the hives stayed angry, and I woke up completely covered.

The scariest part right now is the spread. Before starting this treatment, my hives never went above my shoulders. Now, for the first time, they are all over my neck and face.

I talked to my doctors about it, and they gently explained that it’s highly unlikely to be a reaction to the medication itself, as these drugs are supposed to do the exact opposite.

I really respect my medical team and know they are trying to help me find a baseline, but I can't shake what my body is experiencing. Have any fellow CIU warriors experienced anything like this? Is it possible for antihistamines or standard treatments to act as a trigger or make a flare-up significantly worse?

Would love to hear your insights or if anyone has gone through something similar. Thank you!
