30M - Looking for experiences from younger people who had a total hip replacement (Ct--scan NSFW)

Hi everyone,

I'm a 30-year-old male looking for advice and personal experiences from people who have had a total hip replacement, especially if you had it at a younger age.

Over the past 5 years, my hip has progressively become worse. I have stage 3–4 osteoarthritis, along with large osteophytes, calcification, and both cam and pincer impingement. My range of motion is now severely limited—I can't bend my hip to 90° without a strong impingement.

My biggest struggle isn't constant unbearable pain, but how much it limits my daily life. For example:

  • I can't put on or take off my socks while sitting—I have to lie down.
  • I can't reach my toenails.
  • Sitting on low chairs or toilets is painful.
  • Getting in and out of cars is difficult.
  • I can't sit on the floor with friends.
  • I'm Vietnamese and visit Vietnam often, where sitting on low stools is common, but I can barely do it anymore.
  • I can't sit down or get up from my couch normally—I almost have to drop into it and roll off.
  • I love boxing, but my hip is usually much more painful afterward.

The hip is something I'm aware of almost all the time, but the severe pain flare-ups only happen about once every six months, usually after driving a manual car or sitting in a bad position for a long time.

I've seen four orthopedic surgeons. Three recommended a total hip replacement. One thought an arthroscopy might still be possible, but he hadn't seen my CT scan. They all agree my hip is badly damaged, but they're hesitant because I'm only 30 and worry that my expectations may be too high.

A physical therapist friend also told me he wouldn't replace a joint unless the pain wakes you up at night, which has made me question whether I'm "bad enough" for surgery. At the same time, I feel like I'm slowly wasting my youth because so many normal activities have become difficult or impossible.

I know several older people who say their hip replacement gave them their lives back, but I'm scared of what I might lose. Will I be able to return to sports? Could I still box (even if just training and light sparring)? Will I trade my current problems for new ones? Or will I finally get my mobility and quality of life back? Will i get back in the gym, biking, maybe even sparring?

TL;DR: Are there any younger, active people (20s, 30s, or early 40s) here who had a total hip replacement? If your biggest issue was loss of mobility and quality of life—not constant severe pain—was it worth it? How much mobility did you regain? Were you able to return to sports? Looking back, would you make the same decision again, or do you wish you'd waited longer?

I'd really appreciate hearing both the positives and the negatives. Thanks in advance.
