Recommendations for MDF and Ply cut to size - UK
Recommendations for the best places you get your cut to size done for large jobs. Not b&q or wickes please, places where you can order good product online with precision cutting.
I've looked at a few places but the cost is so high they must be geared to people only needing a few peices. Thanks
How would you fit this top section?
Going to add a 22mm thick mdf top to this media unit cabinet run (4000mm long). The unit is enclosed both sides and the top will be scribed to the wall.
I dont think there is a way to join the mdf and then fit a 4000mm peice in one go. The architrave on the adjacent walls mean the top section can't be moved into potion from the front and the chimney breast means it cant be fitted at an angle on one side and then lowered into position. So I think I'll need to fit as two sections with a butt joint in the middle..any clever ideas to make this joint as strong and as flush as possible? I'm worried a crack will appear over time through the paint finish. If I was able to fit as one peice i would join it properly with some dowels for perfect alignment and strength before hand.
Thoughts welcome!
Media Unit - Design / Material Advice needed
Hi – I’m planning this media unit build and need some advice - I’ve done alcove units and wardrobes but nothing on this scale/span before. Based in UK.
Current plan is to create 4 double cupboards along the bottom. C. 1000mm wide each with either full top or stretchers and overlay MDF doors. Apart from material choice for the carcass (MDF vs Ply) I’m comfortable with the design and build of this part.
For the top units I plan to split each vertical section into individual boxes (18mm MDF or ply) so it is easier to install by stacking them, I’ll then add a face frame to cover the 36mm (18mm x2) face and the whole unit will be painted. These boxes will have back panels.
My concern is around the span of the ‘shelves’. Even though the shelves are formed from the top/bottom of 2 boxes, is the span still too wide? Do I need to engineer a more structural solution with some CLS timber?
Using 18mm MDF for the sides and back will also result in a pretty heavy unit when finished – 18mm back panel is probably needed for the TV section, but maybe I can go thinner for the rest?
I would love to make if out of birch ply (pocket holes, lighter, less sag) but the cost is 3x the cost of a good MR MDF. c.£40 per sheet vs £120 per sheet.
Welcome any advice on materials / design flaws.
Thanks
