Why is nobody targeting the KOM jersey?

Yesterday Lorenzo Fortunato announced that he will target the polka dot jersey at the Tour and I can’t lie, I absolutely love this.

In recent years, the KOM jersey at the Tour often felt like a consolation prize for riders whose GC ambitions had already fallen apart. For me it simply lost a bit of its prestige and identity. Like it is so big achievement for a rider and sponsors, but it felt like for me nobody truly wanted it.

But now there’s a rider making it his main objective from the very beginning: Lorenzo Fortunato. And this is coming from a rider who already won the Giro d’Italia’s blue mountains jersey last year, so…

a fun stat as well: no rider in the modern era has completed the full set of KOM jerseys across all three Grand Tours. Only Federico Bahamontes in the 1950s and Luis Herrera in the 1980s ever managed it.

The Giro chapter is done for Lorenzo. Now the Tour awaits. And I will be cheering for him.

Has greatness become cycling’s biggest attraction?

After yesterday’s Jonas win and seeing the number of likes and shares on it everywhere, I can’t stop thinking about the cycling paradox we have.

Because you know, people on social media keep talking about how boring the usual wins of superstars like Tadej Pogačar or Jonas Vingegaard are, and how terrible and predictable this era of cycling supposedly is and that the same guy or same guys are always winning.

But at the same time, even those “boring” dominant wins from the aliens generate far more engagement than an incredible battle between two lesser-known cyclists usually does.

The same was at Strade Bianche… everyone was like, oh it will be a boring race, I won’t even watch it, we know Pogačar will win, but at the same time, never in history were more fans on the side of the road than at this edition. And by a big margin.

You know, it always amazes me how a thrilling tactical race between outsiders might be amazing for hardcore fans of the sport, but it rarely reaches people outside the cycling bubble.

That is the paradox of modern cycling fandom. People say they want unpredictability, but what truly captures attention is greatness.

Why doesn’t this part of Europe produce many top cyclists?

Giro d’Italia showed the video (sorry for the bad quality) of all countries that has won a Giro stage and it is really interesting to see the Southeast part of Europe is missing with not a single country from there. But why there are no good pro cyclists from there?

It’s been almost two months, and I still haven’t been able to find a single full video of Wout’s attack in the Milano–Sanremo finale.

Why do we only ever get the moments that make it onto the TV broadcast? It’s similar with Cavendish’s last Tour de France win—I’ve never seen a full, uninterrupted helicopter shot of it either.

Is there a reason why footage like that isn’t available?

Because of the rule that teams can’t wear a jersey in the same color as a leader’s jersey at Grand Tours—something fans know well from Visma having to switch kits at the Tour—UNO-X also has to change their jersey for the Vuelta.

Today, they revealed the design the team will use not only at La Vuelta Femenina, which starts tomorrow, but also at the men’s Vuelta in August. Do you like it?
