Hallmark birthday card circa 1994

Cropped almost everything but the main text from the shot of the inside bc it featured a very personalized, somewhat identifiable message from my father to my mother for her 23rd birthday. I’m pretty sure he wrote over the birthday message to make it look like his own handwriting lol

A fish I painted a couple years ago

I wanted it to look like one of those wall-mounted taxidermy fish. I think it was supposed to be a big mouth bass. It’s watercolor, ink and colored pencil

Why do I keep farting myself awake?

I started a new antidepressant this year, off-brand Zoloft (Sertraline) and since I’ve been on it, every fucking morning at least an hour before my alarm is set to go off, I get startled awake by my own thunderous farts ricocheting out my own ass. The first couple of times it was pretty funny but we have thin walls in my apartment and my roommate mentioned hearing it so now I am honestly pretty embarrassed. Why does this keep happening

Leashed, badly trained dogs on the subway??

Got into it today cuz this lady had a huge dog on a leash that was extending across the entire length of the Central M platform AT RUSH HOUR while its owner stood there playing on her phone

I tried to tell her to rein it in so I could get past and this big ass dog jumped on me. Owner tried to pull the point-at-your-airpods-and-say “I can’t hear you” move but I kept talking cuz I was mad asf at that point. I told her she needs to have her dog restrained in a carrier on the train and she said “I’ve literally never heard of that before” and “she’s a puppy” when I said the dog is clearly not well behaved enough to be on public transit.

Like what??? Are people really this dense? Is this a new phenomenon?? I thought it was common knowledge that dogs are required to be in bags or carriers on the subway? How is it not immediately clear that a leashed, poorly behaved dog in a crowded subway is a safety issue?

All The Places You’ll Go, traveling with inexperienced friends in a foreign country

So, for a bit of background context: I was born in the US to a non-American parent. My Grandmother on that side lives in a tiny seaside European town, which I have visited many times as a child/young adult. I spent quite a lot of time there w/ her in my late teens-early 20s, and once managed to convince 2 of my closest school friends to join me.

The three of us were inseparable at the time. Neither of them had ever been out of the country, and they would be spending two weeks abroad with me and my Grandmother!! We were so excited. I spent a few weeks leading up to the trip giving them as much of a rundown as possible, namely:

•The town is generally very safe during the day, but the touristy/nightlife areas can get sketchy at night

•It’s VERY easy to get lost. The streets are long, winding, and nonsensical. I made them both download offline maps so they could at least make it back to my Grandmother’s house if we were separated. She lives across the street from a historic cemetery which I made them save as a checkpoint.

––––––––––––––––––––––––

While there, a local 24 hr food festival overlapped our stay. This particular area tends to have events that go well into the early hours of the next day. Most party ppl can easily be out til 5-6AM. My friends really wanted to check it out.

We go, have some finger food, enjoy some dancing. End up staying out until about 2AM.

As we’re making our way back to my Grandmother’s house, we’re passing the cemetery I mentioned earlier, when random fucking guy pops up out of the darkness of the night to ask us for a lighter. Friend 1 and I both shrug him off – we’re tired, he honestly seems a little coked up… Not rly interested in engaging.

Friend 2 though, she decides to entertain the guy. Friend 2 was always a bit of glutton for male attention unfortunately. I’d seen her get herself into some not-so-great situations this way before. I’d always try to warn her but she rarely listened.

So Friend 1 and I are standing on the sidelines, watching her chat this guy up, rolling our eyes and checking our watches. Eventually she saunters back over to let us know that her New Strange Friend She Just Found In A Graveyard was, apparently, a chef in town for the food festival, and his job had put him up in an incredibly nice local hotel. He was “looking for some people his age” to come back and “enjoy the room” with him.

Now this was nearly 10 years ago but I had already been around the block enough times by then to know that it sounded like an incredibly stupid idea. Like sure girl. Let’s go home with a COMPLETE STRANGER you met FIVE MINUTES AGO in a FOREIGN COUNTRY... Girl, whatever. Friend 1 and I earnestly try our best to convince her not to go. Doesn’t work. She says she’ll just meet up with us later.

So, now I have to make a decision. Do I go back home with Friend 1 who is practically falling asleep standing up, or do I let Friend 2 walk into the abyss with a stranger? I begrudgingly chose the latter and followed her dumb ass to the hotel, while Friend 1 turned in for the evening.

When we get to the room, our new “friend” immediately locks the door behind us. Cool! Now we’re trapped. He shows us to the balcony, which does admittedly have a spectacular view. He tells us to wait here while he prepares us drinks. We hear him go in and make a phone call in another language, notably not the local dialect.

At this point I turn to my friend and say, did you notice he locked the door behind us? She says yes, and she’s scared. She says she doesn’t know how we’re going to get out. I say, yea dumbass, that’s why we shouldn’t be here in the first place!!! Now we have to plan an exit strategy while nobody on earth knows where we are, except our one friend who is probably asleep by now!!!

Soon, the guy beckons us back inside... No drinks to be found. He asks us to sit down on a loveseat. Then he asks if he can take our photo. He snaps a few shots on his phone of us looking most likely scared out of our fucking minds. He then flops down and splays himself across the king bed, and asks, “So, what do you girls think of me?”, while gesturing downwards towards his body.

At this point I was scared too, but also I was already boiling over with anger towards my friend for getting us into this situation, so I did not hold back. I say: “Oh, you want to know what I think of you? I think you’re a fucking creep!! I think you know that I KNOW that you locked us in here! And I think you need to let us the fuck out of here right now before I call my Grandmother AND the police!”

He gets angry and starts sputtering. He says, I didn’t mean *you*, I mean *her!* and points at my friend, and says, “What do YOU think of me?”

She has tears streaming down her face at this point. She pitifully replies that she thinks I’m right and she wants to leave.

He gets up and starts cussing, speaking in another language again. Stomping around the hotel room, knocking things over. Eventually, he goes into the bathroom, SLAMMING the door shut loud as fuck behind him.

It was then I notice he had left the hotel room key sitting on the bedside table next to where he had laid down when he first propositioned us, for, I assume, sex. Was not interested in sticking around to find out. I grab the room key in my right hand, my friend’s wrist in my left hand, unlock the door as quickly as possible, and quite literally run screaming down the hotel hallway, down the stairs bc fuck waiting for an elevator, out the hotel lobby, and all the way back to my grandmother’s house, where we sat on the roof –sobbing, smoking cigarettes and trying to process what the fuck had just (nearly) happened to us.

TL;DR I took some friends to visit my family overseas. One got herself(/me by proxy) into a situation in which we very likely would have experienced SA had I not been pissed off enough with my friend to get loud and angry about it.

That friend and I don’t talk anymore.
