NEW ACHIEVEMENT: GRASS TOUCHER!

The AI is stunned. Mongo is appalled. Prepotente is furious because apparently he was supposed to be the one who achieved maximum grass contact, and he is currently screaming at a lawn somewhere while demanding that the achievement be revoked on a technicality

Ohio governor candidates roll out marijuana stances, except Ramaswamy

This is paywalled, but here are the highlights:

Amy Acton

  • Keep recreational marijuana legal: She would respect the 2023 voter-approved Issue 2 and keep recreational marijuana legal for adults 21+.
  • Keep the 10% tax: She would maintain Ohio’s current 10% marijuana tax and oppose efforts to recriminalize portions of what voters approved.
  • Allow regulated hemp THC products: Opposes Ohio’s new ban on hemp-derived THC drinks/products and favors regulating them similarly to marijuana, with testing, safety requirements, age restrictions and protections for children.

Don Kissick

  • Keep marijuana legal: Says the government should respect the 2023 vote rather than continually trying to undermine it.
  • Change marijuana laws: Wants marijuana-related OVI convictions to require proof of actual impairment rather than relying solely on THC levels. He also supports sealing/expunging records for conduct that is now legal.
  • Lower taxes and allow hemp THC: Would consider reducing the current 10% marijuana tax once regulatory costs are covered, ease some licensing restrictions for small businesses, and allow hemp-derived THC products with reasonable age, packaging and serving restrictions.

Vivek Ramaswamy

  • No current position: His campaign did not respond to Cleveland.com’s questions about marijuana or hemp policy, so his position as a gubernatorial candidate remains unclear.
  • Previously supported federal legalization: During his 2024 presidential campaign, he said he favored federal marijuana legalization.
  • But opposed Ohio Issue 2: Ramaswamy voted against Ohio's 2023 recreational marijuana initiative, arguing that state law conflicting with federal law creates confusion and undermines the rule of law. He also criticized the original law's provisions directing some marijuana tax revenue toward assistance for disadvantaged business owners.

Bottom line: Dr. Acton and Kissick are both explicitly pro-legalization and pro-regulation, although Kissick wants substantially more changes to the existing system. Ramaswamy is the outlier because he has not stated what he would actually do as governor, despite having opposed Issue 2 in 2023.

Data centers in Ohio: Acton, Ramaswamy lay out how policies for new projects in the state

Bullet points:

Amy Acton

  • Supports a conditional moratorium on new data centers until certain requirements are met.
  • Says Ohio should be "open for business, but not up for sale."
  • Wants data centers to pay the full cost of the infrastructure and utility upgrades they require so residents aren't left subsidizing them.
  • Requires 100% union labor for construction.
  • Wants projects to meet environmental standards and protect air and water quality.
  • Requires community benefit agreements with the communities where data centers are built.
  • Wants companies to be transparent, including an end to nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) surrounding projects.
  • Suggests data centers should ideally bring or provide their own power source so they don't increase electric rates for Ohioans.
  • Frames the issue as protecting families, businesses, and local communities from higher costs and unchecked development.

Vivek Ramaswamy

  • Strongly supports expanding data centers in Ohio.
  • Calls AI data centers and similar technology investments "a good thing."
  • Wants Ohio to attract industries of the future, including AI and cryptocurrency infrastructure.
  • Acknowledges data centers will place major demands on Ohio's electric grid.
  • Says those energy needs should be met through expanded energy production, including nuclear power.
  • Has argued for months that data centers should cover their own energy needs, according to his campaign.
  • Received the endorsement of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, which supports data center development.
  • Has received campaign contributions from companies connected to the data center industry.
  • Financial disclosures show investments in companies throughout the data center supply chain, which critics say presents a potential conflict of interest. Ramaswamy's campaign disputes criticism and argues his views predated Acton's proposal.

Data Centers | Dr. Amy Acton for Governor

Dr. Acton's proposal doesn't call for banning data centers outright. Instead, she argues for much stricter rules: requiring data center companies to pay the full cost of the electricity, water, gas, and infrastructure they use rather than shifting those costs to Ohio ratepayers.
