WEATHER MEGATHREAD UPDATE: Invest 90E / New Tropical Threat to Hawaiʻi

Last Updated: August 19, 2026

Hawaiʻi is now monitoring another developing tropical system, currently designated Invest 90E, east-southeast of the islands.

This is a different system from Lala.

The National Hurricane Center currently gives Invest 90E a 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within both the next 48 hours and the next 7 days.

At this point, formation appears likely. What remains much less certain is exactly how strong the system will become and how close it will pass to Hawaiʻi.

What We Know Right Now

Invest 90E is moving generally westward toward the Central Pacific and is expected to organize further over the next day or so.

Current guidance generally brings the developing system toward the vicinity of Hawaiʻi this weekend.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu says forecast ensembles currently show a general preference for a track similar to Lala or possibly somewhat farther south, but emphasizes that it is still too early to forecast an exact path.

That uncertainty is important.

A relatively small shift in track could make a significant difference in rainfall, wind, surf and flooding impacts on individual islands.

When Could Hawaiʻi Be Affected?

The earliest fringe effects could begin reaching the Big Island on Saturday, with the more significant period currently looking like Sunday into Monday.

The Big Island would likely encounter effects first because the system is approaching from the east-southeast.

Maui County, Oʻahu and Kauaʻi could potentially see impacts afterward depending on the eventual track and size of the storm.

It is too early to say that any particular island will or will not experience significant impacts.

The Biggest Concern Right Now: Rain

Even if the center of the eventual storm remains south of Hawaiʻi, tropical moisture associated with the system could still move across portions of the state.

The National Weather Service has already increased precipitation chances for Sunday and Monday because of the developing system.

Potential impacts include:

  • Heavy tropical rainfall
  • Flash flooding
  • Landslides and rockfalls
  • Strong or gusty winds
  • Dangerous surf
  • Rough ocean conditions
  • Coastal flooding
  • Additional power outages

This is especially worth watching because some areas are still recovering from Lala, including infrastructure and power systems.

No Tropical Watches or Warnings Yet

As of this update, the National Weather Service Honolulu has no tropical watches or warnings in effect for Hawaiʻi.

That is completely normal at this stage.

The system has not yet developed into a tropical cyclone, and forecast uncertainty remains high.

If development continues as expected, official tropical cyclone advisories and a forecast cone should become available once the system becomes a tropical depression or tropical storm.

Those forecasts will give us considerably better information than individual model runs currently circulating online.

If You Are Traveling This Weekend

If you are arriving, departing or traveling between islands Saturday through Monday, this is now something you should monitor closely.

However, this is not currently a reason by itself to cancel a Hawaiʻi trip.

There is still significant uncertainty regarding the storm's eventual track, intensity and impacts.

Travelers should:

  • Monitor the National Hurricane Center / Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
  • Check National Weather Service Honolulu forecasts.
  • Watch airline notifications.
  • Check directly with hotels and vacation rentals.
  • Keep an eye on tours and ocean activities, which may cancel earlier than flights or hotels.
  • Avoid making decisions based on a single weather model or social-media forecast.

Forecast confidence should improve significantly once Invest 90E develops a defined circulation and official tropical cyclone advisories begin.

A Note About Forecast Models

You may see model graphics over the next few days showing everything from a hurricane approaching Hawaiʻi to a storm passing safely south of the islands.

Do not treat individual model runs as forecasts.

The National Weather Service specifically notes that while models presently show some agreement on a track resembling Lala or somewhat farther south, it is still too early to determine the exact path.

We will put much more weight on the official NHC/CPHC forecast once the storm forms.

ALL INVEST 90E QUESTIONS GO IN THIS THREAD

Please continue using this megathread for questions including:

  • "Should I cancel my trip?"
  • "Will Maui be affected?"
  • "I'm flying Sunday. Should I change my flight?"
  • "Will the Road to Hana be open?"
  • "Will my snorkeling tour operate?"
  • "Will Waikīkī get hit?"
  • "Should we leave early?"
  • "What island will have the best weather?"

Separate posts about Invest 90E and its potential effect on individual vacations will be removed.

Please also do not take visitor-specific travel questions to r/Hawaii. Use this thread instead.

Current Bottom Line

Invest 90E is now a legitimate system to watch.

Development into a tropical depression or tropical storm is considered highly likely.

There is a realistic possibility of impacts in Hawaiʻi beginning this weekend, particularly Saturday through Monday, but the severity and exact location of those impacts remain uncertain.

For now:

Monitor, prepare for possible travel disruptions, but don't panic or make decisions based on speculative model runs.

We will update this thread again as soon as the system develops and the National Hurricane Center begins issuing official track and intensity forecasts.

WEATHER MEGATHREAD: Invest 93C / Potential Tropical Storm Lala

The main change is that Invest 93C now has a defined low-level center and is expected to become a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Lala on Wednesday. However, thunderstorms remain disorganized, and there is still no reliable island-by-island impact forecast. Here is the revised thread:

WEATHER MEGATHREAD: Invest 93C / Potential Tropical Storm Lala

Last Updated: August 11, 2026, afternoon HST

Latest Update

Invest 93C continues to organize approximately 1,050 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands.

Visible satellite imagery indicates that a well-defined low-level circulation has formed, although its associated showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized. Conditions are favorable for further development, and the National Hurricane Center now expects a tropical depression or tropical storm to form Wednesday.

The system is moving generally west-northwest at approximately 15 mph. If it becomes a named storm, it will be called Tropical Storm Lala.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu continues to emphasize that the eventual track and effects on Hawaiʻi remain uncertain. Hawaiʻi’s forecast could change significantly after the system develops and forecasters can establish a more reliable center, track and intensity forecast.

There are currently no tropical storm or hurricane watches or warnings for the Hawaiian Islands.

What We Know Right Now

There is still considerable uncertainty regarding the system’s eventual track, intensity and proximity to the islands.

The system is expected to move generally west-northwest toward the vicinity of Hawaiʻi, with possible effects beginning this weekend. Forecast possibilities still include:

  • Passing south of the Hawaiian Islands
  • Passing close enough to produce indirect effects
  • Making a closer approach to one or more islands

It is too early to determine which islands may be most affected or whether the center will pass directly over any portion of the state.

Do not treat individual forecast-model runs or “spaghetti plots” as official forecasts. Models may shift considerably until the storm fully forms and forecasters establish its circulation center.

Potential Impacts

Even if the storm’s center remains away from the islands, Hawaiʻi could experience:

  • Large and dangerous east- or southeast-facing surf
  • Rough ocean conditions and strong currents
  • Coastal flooding
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Gusty winds

A closer approach could bring:

  • Strong or damaging winds
  • Flash flooding
  • Landslides in vulnerable areas
  • Significant coastal flooding
  • Dangerous surf and marine conditions
  • Flight, tour and other travel disruptions
  • Possible power outages

The National Weather Service says the storm’s eventual track will determine whether a large east-to-southeast swell reaches advisory levels later this week.

If You Are Visiting Hawaiʻi

Please monitor official forecasts, reputable local news, airline communications, hotel or resort messages and emergency information.

We cannot tell you whether you should cancel your trip, change your flight, leave an island early, change hotels or alter a particular activity. Everyone’s circumstances are different, and visitors must evaluate their own situations as the forecast becomes clearer.

At this point, visitors should remain informed and review cancellation or change policies, but should not make major decisions solely from social-media forecasts, individual computer models or alarming headlines.

If you are already in Hawaiʻi, follow instructions issued by local authorities and your accommodations. Stay away from the ocean when warnings or closures are issued. Do not enter the water simply because conditions appear manageable from shore.

ALL INVEST 93C / LALA QUESTIONS GO IN THIS THREAD

Please do not create individual posts in r/VisitingHawaii asking about Invest 93C, Tropical Storm Lala or how the system may affect your vacation.

This includes questions such as:

  • “Should I cancel my trip?”
  • “Will Maui be affected?”
  • “I’m flying Saturday—should I change my flight?”
  • “Will my hotel be safe?”
  • “Should we leave early?”
  • “Will the Road to Hana be open?”
  • “Will our snorkeling tour be cancelled?”
  • “What will the weather be like in Waikīkī this weekend?”

Post those questions and discussions as comments in this megathread only.

Separate posts concerning this weather system will be removed by the moderators.

Please Do Not Take Visitor Questions to r/Hawaii

The moderators of r/Hawaii have specifically asked visitors and people planning trips to direct travel-related questions to r/VisitingHawaii.

Please respect that community and do not post vacation or travel questions about this storm there. Use this megathread instead.

Official Sources

We will continue updating this post as useful information becomes available and forecast confidence improves. Check the date and time of every forecast before relying on it.

Please remain informed, avoid presenting speculation as fact and evaluate your own situation using the best current information available.

The organization, distance, expected Wednesday formation and continued forecast uncertainty are supported by the latest National Weather Service Honolulu discussion and the most recent Invest 93C outlook summarized by Zoom Earth.

Ballard FC Qualify for 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

From goballardfc.com

> Ballard FC is proud to announce the club’s qualification and planned participation in the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the country’s history, with the first-ever edition taking place in 1914. After participating in 2024 and 2025, Ballard FC have qualified for the third time in just five years.

> Ballard FC was one of nine USL League Two clubs to receive and accept an invitation. Ballard FC earned their invite with a 12-1-1 regular season record, the best in club history, en route to a fourth straight NW Division Title. The club’s 12-1-1 record included a perfect 7-0-0 home record, and Ballard FC will be hoping to host another Open Cup match at Interbay Stadium as they look for their first Open Cup win – or “cupset” – in club history.

> Due to automatically qualifying for the 2027 edition of the Open Cup, Ballard FC will not be involved in Fall Open Cup Qualifying like they were in the fall of 2025. This means that the next Ballard FC match will take place after the new year.

> The U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination style tournament with teams from all divisions of American soccer. All professional teams across the U.S. Soccer pyramid receive automatic qualification while any amateuer/semi-professional teams (like Ballard FC) qualify through their league standing. Locally, the Seattle Sounders have won four Open Cup titles while many other Washington teams have participated in past editions. Perhaps the most notable Washington U.S Open Cup match took place in 2016 when Kitsap Pumas faced off against the Sounders at Starfire Stadium where the Sounders won 2-0. For more information on the Open Cup’s structure and history, head to their Wikipedia page.

> In 2024 and 2025, Ballard FC suffered heartbreaking 1-0 defeats to USL League One’s Spokane Velocity. In 2024, the Velocity scored a late winner in stoppage time. Then in 2025 history seemed to repeat itself, Spokane got the deciding goal in stoppage time of extra time, just before a penalty shootout. In 2027, Ballard FC will be aiming for their first Open Cup goal and Open Cup win.

> In the event that Ballard FC hosts their first round Open Cup match, 2027 Season Ticket Holders will have priority access to purchase Open Cup tickets. 2027 Season Tickets will go on sale at the end of this month. Fans can join the Season Ticket Holder Waitlist today and receive early access to purchase their season tickets.

> After missing out on the 2026 edition of the U.S. Open Cup, Head Coach Mutanda Kwesele made qualification for the 2027 edition one of the biggest goals for this past season. The team responded well to the challenge, and the club cannot wait to experience the “magic of the cup” once again. The U.S. Open Cup is a huge opportunity. It is a chance for Ballard FC to make an imprint not just on USL 2, but the nation’s soccer landscape as a whole. The club invites all of their supporters and the entire community to enjoy and experience this incredible cup journey.

> Details are still to come on the date, opponent, location, and more regarding the first round of U.S. Open Cup matches. Fans can stay in the loop by following @goballardfc on social media, or joining the club newsletter.

> Written by Max Dresbach

tl;dr: Ballard FC has qualified for the 2027 U.S. Open Cup after a club-record 12-1-1 season and fourth straight NW Division title. It will be Ballard’s third appearance in five years, with the club seeking its first Open Cup goal and win after two 1-0 losses to Spokane Velocity. Match details are still TBD, and season ticket holders will get priority access if Ballard hosts at Interbay.
