Countertop combi steam air fry oven recommendations requested

I’m looking to dip my toes into combi oven cooking, specifically by getting a countertop combination oven that handles steam cooking, convection cooking, typical air fry cooking, and basic toaster oven capability.

I’ve been looking at the Anova Precision Oven v2 at $389.70 (down from $1299???) and the NuWave Combi Steam Oven at $358.72. Please let me know what you think of these two, plus any others I should be considering. Thank you!

6 weeks post-op, 3 weeks stall + previous lap band w/ 180 lb loss

I had gastric bypass surgery on May 6, and lost several pounds a week for the first three weeks, then pretty much nothing for the last three weeks. I’m beyond frustrated. I know about the dreaded three week stall, but is it supposed to last three weeks? Now this panicked voice in my head is saying “maybe this is all the weight you are going to be able to lose…”

Pre-op diet start: 252
Surgery day: 247
Today: 234

The reason I’m scared is because of my back history. In 2008 I weighed 433 and had lap band surgery. I lost down to 180, which I was thrilled with, but the lap band gave me life-threatening GERD, and I had to have it removed. I gained back to 330, then lost down to my surgery weight with GLP-1s, although I had plateaued on those for two years before I decided on surgery.

HW Pre-lap band (2008): 433
LW Post-lap band (2013): 180
Lap band removal (2019): 220
Pre-GLP-1 (2021): 330
GLP-1 stall (2023): 250

So with all my prior weight ups and downs, and the fact that this weight range of 230-250 is very much a “set point” weight for me (I’ve spent much of my life in this weight range), I’m starting to worry that maybe I won’t be able to lose any more.

I’ve been really good on the diet, getting my protein in, minimal carbs, sipping water constantly, until yesterday. I was traveling and I decided to try eating restaurant food rather than bringing my own from home. I was surprised what and how much I was able to eat. I don’t want to do that again, today I’m back on a more disciplined eating plan, but I’m still discouraged at the lack of weight loss.

I know my history is pretty unique, but does anyone have any words of hope and encouragement for me? I really want to get back to “onederland” at least. (I’m 5’ 7”)

Delayed onset dumping syndrome?

I’m 5.5 weeks post-op from gastric bypass. I’ve been following the diet pretty damn closely, until last night: I ate two dark chocolate quinoa crisps, made with regular (with sugar) dark chocolate. Everything seemed fine, tummy-wise, and later went to bed and slept well all night.

This morning, soon after waking, I had the urge to empty my bowels, so went to the bathroom and did so (normal), and only after that did I have the most intense wave of nausea come over me. All of a sudden I started dry heaving, about 20 times, but of course nothing is coming up because my stomach is now empty. But I sure drooled a lot into my bathroom waste can.

So what was that? I was racking my brains thinking what I could have done to cause this, and I can only think of dumping syndrome and the chocolate quinoa crisps last night. But would that cause vomiting 10-11 hours later with no distress in between? And with my stomach empty?

Sex after surgery

How long did your doctor tell you that you had to wait before having sex after surgery, and did you wait that long?

For me, the doctor’s team said 4-6 weeks. It’s been 2.5 weeks and I feel like it would be perfectly safe to re-engage with my husband, and TBH I’m horny as heck. My sutures are healing well, scabbed up and the scabs are starting to fall off.

Smart Water Bottle makes hydration tracking and reminding easy

Hi all, I wanted to share a hydration reminding and tracking tool I found on Amazon which has been working out really well for me. It’s a “smart” water bottle, which tracks your consumption as you go along throughout the day. It has a corresponding app where you can set your daily goal and your reminder frequency. If you don’t take a sip within your reminder frequency, the ring at the bottom of the cap glows, and you can choose to get a reminder on your phone. Also, if you drink liquids from a different source (for example, bottled protein shake) you can add those ounces to your total. There are even pre-sets so it’s just a few taps to add a protein shake. The bottle itself is double walled, and holds ice all day.

For me, this is the perfect solution for tracking my hydration intake and reminding me to drink regularly. The bottle lasts several days on a charge, and recharges via USB-C. It comes in lots of different colors, and two sizes: 24 oz and 32 oz. But beware, the 32 oz size doesn’t fit in most car cup holders.

I am in no way affiliated with the manufacturer. I just wanted to share a tool that has been very useful for me, and may be for others as well.

GERD after RNY

I have had serious GERD for years, and that was as strong of a motivation for RNY surgery as the weight loss itself. Prior to surgery I was taking 40 mg of Omeprezole daily. I stopped in preparation for surgery. My surgery was 16 days ago, and they had to repair a significant hiatal hernia as well. I fully expected the reflux to stop after surgery, but I have continued to experience heartburn several times a day. I have taken a Tums each time, but it’s not enough anymore.

Two nights ago, I ate cream of butternut squash soup a bit too late in the evening. After about an hour asleep, I woke up with food aspirated in my lungs. Ever since then, I have felt achy and weak. And my heartburn seems to be worse, to the point that the pain is interfering with my sleep.

I have reached out to my surgery team, but haven’t heard back yet. I’m trying to figure out what is going on, and whether I can take something stronger than Tums. FYI, I have been following the post-surgery diet to a T.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

Ocean Fantasy not a fantasy in person

I fell in love with this photo of Ocean Fantasy Quartzite slab from the website of the stone yard (GS Granite in Savage, MN) that my GC told me he uses. We're still early in the remodel design process, but in my imagination and ChatGPT mockups I had been basing my entire kitchen design on this slab for a statement island. Yesterday my husband and I were in the area (we live 3 hours away) and so stopped by, fully expecting to love it in person just as much as the photo.

We were both shocked that in person, we were much less wowed. It seemed much more muted and dusty, and the rust color was much more predominant than the blue (which we love). They pulled the slab into the daylight, in which it looked a little better, but still not wowed. We took a photo, and the colors on the photo came out much more vibrant than it appeared in person. A weird trick of photography? And yes, it is exactly the same slab.

So now we're back to square one. This Ocean Fantasy is still in the running, but we are hoping to find something with dramatic movement with prominent blues and/or greens. Any recommendations?

We're doing a major remodel, including an entirely new kitchen, and I was all set to go with induction for the cooktop (still undecided if I want a separate cooktop/oven or a range). However, my husband brought up the fact that in our location, in the northern woods of Minnesota, in a small rural community, we are sometimes subjected to long power outages. If there's a serious storm, the power companies prioritize restoring the larger communities first, and sometimes in the past it has taken a few days to restore power under these conditions. We've had pretty mild weather the three years I've lived with him, so thus far I have only experienced a similar frequency and length of power outages as when I lived in a metro area, which I feel I could live with. (camp stove, grill, wood burning stove)

Our current propane cooktop can easily be lighted with a match when the power is out, which I have had to do a few times in the past three years.

Have any of you all grappled with the dependency on power service for an induction cooktop? Especially if you live in an area where the power is less reliable than you would like. What backups do you use?
