I remember from old games (maybe i'm wrong) about using protect and then not getting hit by hail and/or sandstorm. today i hit protect with my basculegion to survive one turn and use aqua Jet, but i died from the sandstorm.

so protect only protects from other mons attacks?

no guard: if there's a no guard mon in the field protect never fails or it's the same as always with 33% on the second turn? same for the other attacks like suckerpunch?
