so sometimes when i'm having a bad week, i do something i call "side quest day" where i basically go out without a plan for the day, just walking around and meeting people and popping into whatever local businesses call my name
today, i got a sword fight side quest?
to the dude standing on a bridge at the end of a short hiking trail and challenging people to sword duels... thank you for making my side quest day the most whimsical one i've had in a while. you are why i love this city.
I love sci fi and horror, but a lot of the books I've read recently have a super interesting setup that the book doesn't live up to. As an example, stuff by S.A. Barnes or Mira Grant often catch my attention, only to leave me frustrated towards the climax.
I also tend to lean towards more slow paced, thoughtful explorations of unsettling themes than full on scares, but that's just because, again, I feel like those kinds of books often miss the landing, not because I don't like thrillers. I've loved Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Seep by Chana Porter, and nearly everything by Jeff Vandermeer. I also enjoyed The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling, but did feel like the pacing was a bit choppy at times.
