Rejected for not meeting english language requirements
Hey all,
I'm curious to hear your take on this matter. An email was sent to me today explaining that I my application for a Computer Science Master's was rejected because I did not meet the english requirements. Specifically, the problem was that I have a C2 CPE from Cambridge that is more than 2 years old.
I understand that this requirement is stated clearly and it just is what it is. I find it amazing, though, how this rule manages to exclude someone that knows english really well.
My scores, even though they are more than 2 years old, are clearly above the required threshold of 'overall score 180, minimum of 169 per section':
| Overall | 217 |
|---|---|
| Reading | 207 |
| Use of English | 224 |
| Listening | 230 |
| Speaking | 213 |
Also, I feel like I'm being punished for catering for my future at a young age, given that I acquired the certificate when in 2017, 9 years back, when I was still in high school.
Given that the vast majority of literature on computer science is in english and that I also completed my diploma thesis in english, I can't help but feel that the age of the certificate is irrelevant. I understand using the age as a filter, perhaps, for english certificates that certify a lower level and the applicant just managed to barely pass. But a C2 qualification, which supposedly, according to the Cambridge English website:
"... shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level. It proves you are a highly competent speaker of English and can communicate with fluency and sophistication."
being considered invalid due to being old is funny.
Unfortunately, the university is clear both on the age filter and on the grounds on which you can make an appeal and it is my understanding that I can't make one.
I just wanted to express my thoughts and see what people here have to say about it.
Cheers.
