Cost of living in the netherlands

Hi, I'm planning to study in the netherlands next year for a bachelor in computer science. I'm a non EU so I wanted to know from people living there about the costs of living such as rent, groceries, etc., and about working part-time. Thanks in advance!

BSN question

So I will be shortly arriving in the Netherlands and I wanted to know if the plan I have in mind for my BSN can work. As the situation is currently, I will be subletting an apartment, the address of which I cannot use to register, as the current owner is registered there and the apartment doesn't allow for multiple registrations (I am aware that this is technically illegal).

I have been told that I can register in the non-residents database to get my BSN, and then change that over to a normal BRP registration when I get a proper apartment. The plan is to do so within the four month timeframe that the non-resident BSN is valid for. I want a BSN so I can get a part time job, as well as basic healthcare, a dutch bank account and all other things it is used for.

My question then is, is this a valid plan? I know the situation is not ideal, but it is what I could manage to do so I didn't have to postpone my studies for next year. Will I run into any issues with an RNI (non-resident) issued BSN? Can I indeed change it over to a normal BRP registration when I get a proper home?

WDKA Toelating en selectie

Hi!

Narrow (?) or higher math

Hello!
I’m currently entering the last year of my gymnasium/high school and am looking into studying in the Netherlands. My options so far have been Computational Social Sciences at UvA or two programs at Hanze University, Creative Media & Game Technologies and a Software program, although I cannot find it for the life of me on the website.
I chose narrow(?) math in high school compared to higher math due to the higher math teachers not being the best and I am now questioning if I even have the ability to enter any IT related programs.

Will I manage, will I have a hard time or can I even get in? Thank you!

Smoking?

Hey guys, I’m an international student and I recently just arrived here. I was wondering if there were any designated smoking areas (although I’ve seen people just light their cigs anywhere outside the airport,) or if the regulations here for smoking were very strict?

I use a vape, for reference, but I was really worried of just smoking in the hotel parking lot or on a vacant sidewalk because that kind of stuff was generally allowed back at my country.

I haven’t found a smoking zone yet.

Schedule for HAN is completely incomprehensible and the website is unusable and disorganized.

I'm starting my studies at HAN next week in Nijmegen, and the schedule system is pathetic. It's so complicated that there's 2 PowerPoint presentations dedicated to understanding the schedule application. Apparently you have to sign up for each individual class you will take, but I don't know what clases my bachelor programme has. (I've never been told). Even if I did know, the clases are labelled as a combination of letters and numbers that is impossible to decipher. When I select a class, it doesn't tell me where it is or at what time. I don't even know where to go on my first day. People have already told me this "university" sucks ass so I'm planning to get an HBO-p and get the hell out of here.

If anyone knows how to manage is unusable website/app, please let me know. I don't want to start my clases already lost and miserable when I have to endure this crap for a whole year.

Likelihood of getting employed

Hi guys, I’m an international (and non-eu) student about to start my bachelor in the Netherlands. Although I’ve done prior research and gathered a lot of info during my EJW and OWee, I still want to inquire about my job prospects and chances to be employed from an unbiased perspective. I’m studying Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft and am willing to continue with its masters. How realistic is it for me to be sponsored and employed here with this background, provided that I also learn some Dutch as well (B1-B2)? It is also possible for me to continue with my masters elsewhere but I really like this country and am willing to live here permanently. What would you guys do had you’ve been in my shoes? Not risk the tight job market in NL and do a MSc elsewhere, ultimately settling in somewhere else or stay here? Thank you guys for your help in advance.

Can I realistically get a job in the Netherlands with an HBO Master’s + teaching Bachelor’s?

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to figure out my realistic career options in the Netherlands and would really appreciate some honest advice from people who work here.

My background is:
Bachelor’s degree in Primary School Teaching from a university outside of Europe.

I’m starting an HBO Master in International Social Work at HAN University of Applied Sciences.
I’m currently learning Dutch and I’m willing to get to a professional

I don’t have a Bachelor’s degree specifically in Social Work.
My main question is: Could I realistically find a professional job in the Netherlands after completing the HBO Master’s, despite my Bachelor’s being in teaching?

I’m particularly interested in jobs related to social work, NGOs, youth work, community work, integration/migration, social services, or similar fields.
I understand that some regulated social-work positions may require a specific Bachelor’s degree or professional registration. What I’m wondering is whether employers generally care about the specific Bachelor’s subject if I have a relevant HBO Master’s and good Dutch, or whether my background would still be a major barrier

Is Automotive Technology at TU/e worth it?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering applying for the Bachelor’s in Automotive Technology at TU/e as one of my backup plans, and I’d love to hear from people who are studying it or have already graduated.

Do you think the program is worth it? What are its biggest strengths and weaknesses?

Job after graduation

Hi, I’m an international student from Pakistan and I’m currently exploring the option of studying in the Netherlands, especially with the future job market and career opportunities in mind.

I’m planning to study Chemical Engineering and have looked into TU/e, the University of Twente, and the University of Groningen. I haven’t really considered TU Delft or UvA since the relevant programs are taught in Dutch.

My plan is to stay in the Netherlands after graduating and hopefully build my career there. I also want to learn Dutch while studying, ideally reaching around B1–B2 level, so I can communicate better and integrate into the workplace.

I wanted to ask how good the education and Chemical Engineering programs are at these universities, and whether it’s relatively easy for an international graduate to find a good job and progress in their career in the Netherlands. How much do employers value these degrees, and would learning Dutch significantly improve my chances?

I also don’t think the cultural adjustment would be a huge issue for me since I’m quite westernized, used to doing things independently, and comfortable handling things on my own. But I’d still love to hear about what the experience is actually like for international students.

Which laptop to buy for mechanical engineering in Fontys

Hi! I’m planning to study Mechanical Engineering at Fontys University and I’m looking to buy a laptop. What would you recommend for the course? What specifications should I look for, especially for CAD and other mechanical engineering software? Is a powerful gaming laptop necessary, or would a mid-range laptop be enough? Thanks a lot

VU mechanical engineering joint programme with UT

Hi! I have a few questions about the joint programme:

- What is it like studying a joint programme?
- How often do you need to travel to Enschede?
- I read that students sometimes stay overnight in Enschede once a week. Is that correct?
- Is it possible to combine the programme with a part-time job?
- What does the typical weekly schedule look like?
- Do you need to attend lectures every day, or is there some flexibility in the schedule?

I’d really appreciate it if someone could share their experience!

Is this enough for IBEB Erasmus?

Hello!!
I am applying soon and one of my choices is the IBEB(interns economics and business economics)course in Erasmus Rotterdam.(I have other choices but this one is my primary)

I am completing school with British system and I’m currently in AS year with A(Economics) B(Math) and B(Biology). I also have B2 qualification in French and IELTS qualification with 8 overall score. All my igcse grades were above 7 with most being 8s and 9s.

I have done a short internship before at a well known company and one longer one in a less known one.

Additionally I’m a prefect(which means I organize charity events for the school and other projects with the school), I did several extra curricular activities but the longest being rowing for 2 years where I got many medals (idk if that’s important for them or not).

I’ve also done many other languages and am proficient in them but I’ve got no qualifications for them. I could get the qualifications but that would be way past the deadlines such as A2 Greek A2 German and high qualification in Romanian.

For my background, I live in a country with very small population and am originally Romanian in the EU(whether this will make a difference in the admission I don’t think so since I’m an EU citizen still)

Is this enough to get in?

Please help and let me know!!! Any and all advice is appreciated. I’m open to suggestions of any other Dutch universities for this course that will accept me Eg: UvA, Maastricht, Tilburg and so on.
THANK YOU!!

Edit: I’ve researched already and I do meet the requirements, I’m just looking for opinions and advice on what I can do extra to make me stand out.

Admitted to EE, but stuck between TU/e and staying in France. Honest input on BSA and housing?

I'm 18, from France, admitted to the BSc Electrical Engineering starting this September (also got Applied Physics). I'm trying to decide whether to actually come, and I'd rather hear it straight from people who've been through the first year.

My background, so you can judge the level: French baccalauréat with highest honours, 16.44/20 overall. Maths and Physics as my specialisms, plus advanced maths. 17 in maths, 16 in physics, 20 in the oral exam. Cambridge C2 Proficiency in English. Outside school I design PCBs and program microcontrollers, I've got an active GitHub, and I did two internships at an open source software company doing code review and development. Long term I want to go into research, ideally a PhD in microelectronics, which is a big part of why Eindhoven appeals.

My problem is two things.

First, the BSA. I know it's 45 out of 60 credits, and the official figures say 63% continue to the second year in EE. For those of you who did it: what actually separates the people who make it from the ones who don't? Is it maths, workload management, language, something else? I'd rather know now than find out in April.

Second, housing, and this is the bigger one. The only place I could get is a 20m² room in a house shared with 5 other people, around 690 a month all in, on a 12 month contract. I viewed it and honestly it wasn't clean, and there's nowhere quiet to work. I keep reading that first year is heavy, and I'm not sure doing it from that room is realistic. My alternative in France is a selective 5 year engineering track with an integrated bachelor and master at Sorbonne where I'd live at home with no housing risk at all but im worried it is less suited to move to international research afterwards as my aim is to get a PhD in EE field to then work in r&d in a big semiconductor company. I could only do the bachelor in France at sorbonne and try to get a masters a TUE but im not sure the level is on par and i would be accepted.

So: is the housing situation genuinely that rough for first years, or did I just search badly and too late? And has anyone here done a French or other European bachelor and come to TU/e for the master instead? I'm trying to work out whether arriving later is a real option or a way of talking myself out of it.

Thanks for any honest answers, including the discouraging ones.

PhD in Netherlands for non-EU citizen

Hi! I'm a non-EU citizen considering relocating to the Netherlands.

My background: B.S and M.S from my country (both with a strong GPA), plus around 4 years of work experience.

I'm trying to figure out which path is currently more realistic:

  1. Pursuing a PhD at a Dutch university (AI + Medicine) -> relocating

  2. Looking for a job (IT, AI specialist) directly through Linkedin -> relocating -> trying to study in uni later

Honestly, both options feel pretty difficult, and I'm not sure how competitive either one really is right now. I don't have a clear starting point yet, so any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.

Housing fell through

Hi All - there was an issue with the place I had planned to rent out for the year and now I am looking for housing 2 weeks before the school year starts. Spare me the snarky comments because I've read them all. I have registered temporarily (briefadres) with a friend, and will be staying with another friend until around october. Do you think I'll be able to find something in Amsterdam in that time, if I start agressively looking now? The thing I'm noticing is that there are less options now than when I was looking like 3 months ago. Any crazy unhinged tips would be greatly appreciated.

I have enough in my savings to pay for a room at the social hub which seems to be available still but that's an absolute last resort.
