What it took for me to find housing

Like a lot of you I came to do my masters in Netherlands in 2024. I knew there was some housing shortage but man was I unprepared for the crunch in housing for international students. Im a Malaysian, and after crawling through the dirt for 4 weeks, (say what you may), it definitely felt like an invisible force field goes up with some landlords when youre non EU (but mostly when youre a student). But hey, I guess unfamiliarity breeds mistrust anywhere in the world.

I eventually had to use my software engineering background to build a bot which scanned the entire market every 20 seconds and sent me listings which allowed students for me to be the first one to apply. After 6 weeks managed to find a place.

(Not linking the tool here as it might be considered spam)

What I did notice was some neighbourhoods have higher concentration of properties which allowed students so I focused on those which improved my odds.

Here are some free sector student housing stats for Eindhoven by neighbourhoods captured by the tool since 2026, which some of you eating glass right now in the market may find useful.

Hit me up if you'd like the link to the actual interactive map.

can you live modestly (but not army style) Eindhoven on a 300 euro budget?

I assumed my rent would be 800 + another 100 so i am left with 300 without breaking the bank , any students who are in TU/e who can manage a month with this , I dont want a super stressful save all you can experience hence asking for your opinion.

Guarantee Fee and Proof of Finance

Hey everyone! I received a conditional acceptance into a Master’s program for the upcoming September intake.

I’m currently arranging my finances, and so far the university hasn’t sent me any emails regarding fee payment. The only thing they asked me to do was submit a visa-related form on Osiris.

Do I need to submit that form first in order to receive the payment details?

Time on Vestide required for student housing

Can someone help me adjust my expectations on student housing?

I'm an international student (EU passport if that makes any difference) and I'm looking to study in higher ranking universities in the western Europe. I've registered on vestide in april 2025, and I'll start my bachelor's studies in 2026 (september); I did got 12 months free as added bonus on top of my existing time. So ~25 months of total time.

How likely am I to find housing? I've heard that short term is very hard to receive, and in lots of cases it's reserved only for master's. Is it likely that i won't face issues with, i assume, long term housing when I'll apply for housing in august (2026)? Or should i start considering other options outside NL?

Whats up with this CBL (challenge-based learning) thing at TU/e?

Can someone provide some information on your experience with this 'CBL' thing? There are 0 reddit posts on this, which makes it seem like a non-existent part of TU/e, but everywhere I look, TU/e published this like it's a core characteristic of the university? I have a few concerns with this:

- Are there issues with grading? Like maybe team members not willing to cooperate/work nicely; can it pull your GPA down?

-How does grading work, and is it affected by your team? Obviously it's mostly based on your performance, but how much influence does your team have over the grade you receive personally?

-Is it realistic to aim for exceptional grades, like a 9?

is €1000/month rent ok for a central studio in Eindhoven?

So I’m moving to Eindhoven this year for my master’s (non eu) and I think I found a place, but I wanted to run it past people here before I commit to anything.

It’s the top floor of a 3-story house. basically the attic, but it’s been renovated into a studio with its own separate entrance, so I wouldn’t be sharing with anyone.

Location-wise it’s pretty central and 10 mins bike distance to TU/e.

The price is €800 rent + €200 servicekosten (electricity, water, internet, heating? not sure). So €1000 all-in every month.

Here’s the part that’s making me a bit uneasy tho. I haven’t actually seen the inside yet. There’s someone still living there and the landlord said he’ll send photos once the guy moves out (soon). I don’t know if that’s normal here or if I should be worried.

So I guess my questions are: does €1000 sound about right for something like this in Eindhoven? Is the “photos later” thing a red flag or just how it works when there’s a current tenant? And is there anything specific I should be asking the landlord before I sign anything?

Any advice would mean a lot, thxx 🙏

Rejected for not meeting english requirements.

Hey all,

I'm curious to hear your take on this matter. An email was sent to me today explaining that my application for a Computer Science Master's was rejected because I did not meet the english requirements. Specifically, the problem was that I have a C2 CPE from Cambridge that is more than 2 years old.

I understand that this requirement is stated clearly and it just is what it is. I find it amazing, though, how this rule manages to exclude someone that knows english really well.

My scores, even though they are more than 2 years old, are clearly above the required threshold of 'overall score 180, minimum of 169 per section':

Overall 217
Reading 207
Use of English 224
Listening 230
Speaking 213

Also, I feel like I'm being punished for catering for my future at a young age, given that I acquired the certificate in 2017, 9 years back, when I was still in high school.

Given that the vast majority of literature on computer science is in english and that I also completed my diploma thesis in english, I can't help but feel that the age of the certificate is irrelevant. I understand using the age as a filter, perhaps, for english certificates that certify a lower level and the applicant just managed to barely pass. But a C2 qualification, which supposedly, according to the Cambridge English website:

"... shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level. It proves you are a highly competent speaker of English and can communicate with fluency and sophistication."

being considered invalid due to being old is funny.

Unfortunately, the university is clear both on the age filter and on the grounds on which you can make an appeal and it is my understanding that I can't make one.

I just wanted to express my thoughts and see what people here have to say about it.

Cheers.

Worth it to live in Tilburg?

Hi everyone, I’m an international student from Finland and I’ll be starting my studies at TU/e in September⭐️ Like everyone else, I’m looking for a place to stay.

I’d of course prefer a room/apartment in Eindhoven within a close distance to the university, but I’ve widened my search to other nearby cities, too.

I’ve now gotten the opportunity to rent out a decent apartment in Tilburg within my budget.

The train ride itself isn’t too long, but I know the one-way train ticket from Tilburg to Eindhoven is around 9.60€, which will probably add up quickly if I’m traveling back and forth a lot during the day/week/month. If I understood correctly, international students also don’t really get the free/discounted travel rates unless I’m working a certain amount of hours per month.

Just wondering if anyone here has lived in Tilburg before and traveled between there and Eindhoven a lot for uni? Will I miss out on any student life in Eindhoven when living further away? Is it worth it or should I rather keep looking for something in Eindhoven? Thanks!

High School grades (architecture)

What grades on my high school report card should I consider applying to architecture in Eindhoven? I'm in my second year of high school at one of the best high schools in Poland. My first-year average was 4.5/6.0, math 3/6, and physics 4/6. In my second year, I'll get 4/6 in math and 5/6 in physics. My average will also be around 4.5/6.

International students studying in Eindhoven needed for bachelor thesis survey 😊

Hi everyone!

I’m currently writing my bachelor thesis at Erasmus University Rotterdam (though I am an Eindhovenaar myself ;)), and I’m looking for international students who are currently studying in Eindhoven to participate in my survey.

The research focuses on how international students perceive Eindhoven (for example in terms of innovation, education, design, career opportunities, affordability, and housing) and how these perceptions relate to their future intentions to continue studying, live, and/or work in Eindhoven after graduation.

⏱️ The survey takes around 5–7 minutes
🔒 It is completely anonymous

If you could take a few minutes out of your day to fill out my survey, I would really appreciate it 😊

(and yes… this is also me trying to graduate 😅)

Feel free to share it with other international students in Eindhoven as well (this would help out a lot!) 🫶

(Oh, and if you don't mind, an upvote would also help increase the visibility of the survey with other members 🙃)

Thank you! ❤️

https://erasmusuniversity.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bddRgzvSyhGsiKa

P.S. I am having real difficulties finding respondents as I have no international network in Eindhoven at all, so if you are eligible to participate and do not mind taking a few minutes out of your day to help a stranger, it would mean the world to me 🙏

I’m also very open to any suggestions you might have for increasing the visibility of the survey or reaching more international students in Eindhoven
