Nan’s Treasure?

When and how do you suppose this became a proper caption? I usually see it accompanied by the word skeet!?

Now I’m a Newfoundlander, but I came home just 4 years ago? Fill me in please?

Incredibly Economical Chili $7 or less

I made this and it was less than $7 to fill up my slow cooker. ☺️

A good example of why stocking the pantry with basic staples like dry beans, lentils, canned goods and spices goes a long way!

Protein, carbs, fibre and great taste!

I added a half cup of red lentils to thicken and I also added a half teaspoon of liquid smoke for a great flavor!

Started this batch Sunday, so 60 hours in and I’m at an ABV of roughly 5.38% based on my current SG. Being bread yeast I’m thinking it will probably top out at 9-10%, which is fine as a mixer.

Not bad for around 20L at a cost of about $10.

If interested the recipe is in my previous post.

It’s a lot easier than most folks think and with a loaf of bread starting at $3 plus here in Canada it’s just makes sense to make your own.

With 4 cups of flour, a packet of yeast and a tablespoon of salt you’ve got a bread recipe that’s pennies on the dollar.

I just use a cast iron skillet. ☺️

I cut the recipe in half too.

I’ve posted a few times in this sub but I cannot say enough about eating pulses (like lentils), rice and beans. I made a big pot of Mujadara, which is mainly lentils and rice with spice and seasonings. All said and done this only costs about $5 in supplies and I have enough food for days!

It’s quite a simple recipe:

Day three and it’s a pretty aggressive ferment. I just finished a turbo yeast sugar wash and wanted to try something different.

Basic ingredients:
Fleischmans Active Dry Yeast
Passata/Tomato Paste
Sugar
Lemon Juice

20 litre pail. I also inverted the sugar to speed up the ferment.

I say basic ingredients since you can add flavourings if you so desire.

I’ve been away from fermenting for quite some time, so I made two of my favourites to ease back into it. 😊
