I dont know if theres a name for it, I kinda just free handed them.
I had to put my first bird down, we've had a hen isolated for 5 days and everyday she just kept getting worse and worse, we decided to put her down cuz she couldn't eat or drink on her own, and she kept twitching violently, we haven't been able to figure out what caused it, I dont think it was anything to due with eggs, cuz none of the things we tried to help that worked, cuz we thought she might be egg bound or smth, we also tried electrolytes and probiotics in her water, and it also didnt seem to work, i dont think she was infectious cuz the rest of our birds are thriving, I think potentially our goal may of headbutted her and broke smth, cuz hes been headbutting more now that hes reaching puberty, we are going to keep our goats permanently separated from our birds...
My Dark Brahma hen, and Light Brahma Rooster (we got both from different breeders)
We are planning to try and do a couple methods to prevent the sun stain when the rooster molts
And planning on making sure the hen has all her feathers, before we possibly enter them
The show would just be a small rural county fair/poultry show, we see abt 100 birds on average at the show when they do them.
She is roughly 3 years old, has very similar feathers to the blue andalusian, but rarely lays eggs, and lays light blue eggs, and she also has a large floppy comb. Does anyone know the breed, and if its mixed, what the mix is?
UPDATE: i named him " The General Lee" named after the Johnny Cash song
Im looking for a name that either sounds bada$$ (like a name that someone would name a bird of prey or would hear and automatically think was a dangerousanimal) to match his size, and to kinda troll ppl, since hes our GENTLE giant (same size as my goose), or a name based off like a old school country singer, old school rapper, or after a old school rock band.
I have a Ancona and a Black Cayuga, who are still growing, im hoping i get a male and a female, because we just bought a Ancona thats fully feathered, and i found a blue egg in the coop same day that had been ate, and apparently they lay blue eggs, based off the research i did, and ive only found one blue egg in my coop ever (which was intact) before I put the duck in there, becuase i have a grey hen (unknown breed) that lays basically once in a blue moon.
As for the Black Cayuga, ive raised it from a baby, so its very ppl friendly, and he is abt 5 months now, and im confused if it's a male or female, cuz no drake feather yet, but doing the old fashioned method, looked like a tiny smth was there.
So im thinking abt waiting until there both abt a year old, keeping a eye out for anymore blue eggs in the coop, cuz i wanna get the next blue egg, if it's not destroyed, and compare the size to the chicken eggs, and i also wanna see if my cayuga grows a drake feather and/or see if it trys to yk the other duck.
If we get a male and a female im thinking abt breeding them, cuz i was doing some research, and apparently Anconas hatch abt 8 ducklings per litter, if i were to sell the mixed ducklings for $10 each, then I could make roughly $80 per litter, and if everything went well, we were debating investing in a incubator.
If we dont get a male and a female, then we were planning on trying to buy the needed gender, and if we end up needing to buy the opposite gender of Black Cayuga, then was also thinking abt selectively breeding them to get a even darker Black cayuga, (blacker beak, and feet)
So given all this information, was wondering if anybody had any tips when it comes to breeding ducks, so far we were planning on separating the female duck (if we get a female and a male) from the rest of the birds while it lays abt a nestful (in the spring), hope itd go broody since other birds wouldn't be disturbing the nest, and then keep the bird well supplied with nearby food and water.
he was very friendly, abt twice the size of my hens, and very cold hardy, and had notably large spurs in my opinion, compared to other roosters ive owned, and for some reason he had a tail feather that was black and white, that he only grew in winter time.
I have a pet duck that has to go to a emergency vet appt today due to a raccoon attack, and for some reason I called like 5 veterinary clinics with avian departments, and all of them said couldn't help a duck, and the only veterinary clinic I could find that could help is because they have a exotic pet department. According to smth I read on a website a duck kept as a barnyard animal is not considered exotic but one you keep as a pet is like WHAT?, either way its a domestic duck, so my question is from a medical P.O.V, whats the difference?
TW: Bird death+injured birds
I went outside today and 4 of my birds (both my baby turkeys, 1 out of 2 of my baby chickens, and 1 out of 3 of my ducklings were dead, other 2 ducklings were left injured) my 4 adult chickens, my momma goose, and her one baby are okay and unharmed, while for my ducklings one has dried up blood on its beak and head from a claw mark, and the other has its eye bulging out where something has likely gotten ahold of it.
I know this is a page for chickens, but if anyone has any recommendations on how to try and save the duckling please lmk
for now I have made their pen extra secure, and put my remaining injured ducklings inside away from bugs and the heat, along with my remaining baby chicken. I am also going to try and get the duckling to a vet asap
My household is deeply heartbroken by the devastating scene we went outside today and saw, my dad is very sad abt his turkeys, my oldest brother is especially upset abt his chicken, and I am very upset about the deaths and wish my towns animal control would do more to keep wild animals out, cuz out of every town ive been in ive seen Alot more Foxes, raccoons, Possums, stray cats, and dogs who ppl refuse to keep inside or atleast in a pen or a leash in the town I live in.
The main thing im Lf is a black and red top hat,
Letting my gosling enjoy the temporary pool lol
Just wanted to show them off, although if yall know the breeds lmk, the brownish duck is growing brown and black adult feathers with a puff thats growing in on its head, the black duck is growing feathers that shine green under direct light, and the white duck is growing kinda splotches of white, grey and black. (I know the breed of the goose)
It has a black beak with a white tip, yellowish belly, grayish back but has like random black spots, its abt 4-5 weeks old and Google image isn't helping cuz it tried saying it was a gosling 🤣
I went to go take care of her today and i saw this
