Price alerts aren't enough: a beginner setup for catching what actually moves your stocks
Most beginners set a price alert and think they're covered. Then something they own gaps down 8% overnight and the alert fires after the move. Price is usually the last thing to change, not the first.
Here's the setup I use now. Free, about 30 minutes, works with tools you already have.
What actually moves your stocks (before the price does)
- Filings. An 8-K is the form a company files with the SEC to report its own big news — guidance changes, CEO departures, major contracts, accounting issues. It appears on EDGAR (the SEC's filing database) long before it hits your news feed.
- Volume spikes. Unusual volume usually means someone knows something. Price can be flat at 9:30 and the volume bar can still tell you the day won't stay quiet.
- Macro and sector headlines. Rate decisions, FDA rulings, chip export rules. Your stock can move on news that never mentions its name.
Why beginners find out last
You check the price. The events live somewhere else — EDGAR, a newswire, the volume column. By the time a story is in your broker's "top news" section, the move is usually already priced in.
The 30-minute setup
- Turn on price and volume alerts in your broker app for everything you own. Volume alerts matter more than most people think.
- Follow filings for each company you hold. EDGAR has free per-company filing feeds(RSS), or free alert services like KFilings will email you the moment a company files an 8-K or 10-Q.
- Set a news alert for each ticker, plus one for your sector.
- When any alert fires, answer three questions before touching the position: what happened, why it matters, what to watch next. That habit is the real edge — the alerts just make sure you're there to use it.
This is how I organize market information, not investment advice — but it's the difference between reacting to a chart and understanding what moved it.
What stock made you miss a move once, and what were you watching instead?
StockDuty + Interactive Brokers Mobile App
Hi,
I have built StockDuty https://apps.apple.com/app/id6785269333 (iOS). I am a long term IBKR customer and use IBKR mobile app extensively. Once I analyze the stock using StockDuty it helps me to open IBKR Mobile app quickly (seamless) . See the screenshots similar like cash tag in X (Twitter).
I thought it will be useful.
What it does:
Stock alerts + an equity research platform for the stocks you actually own - or want to buy. It analyzes a ticker with fundamental analysis, Buy/Sell calls, sentiment analysis, technical analysis, and quantitative models trained on the S&P 500, S&P 400, STOXX 600, MCHI, and Nikkei 225.
I kept missing the stuff that moved my positions — a volume spike, an 8-K, a piece of macro news - so I built an app that watches those for you and pushes the alert with the context: what happened, why it matters, what to watch next.
