[August 20] Reminder to vote Mikoto innocent!

Mods are posting the trial data again so I’m gonna go back to branding these as inno voting reminders as they used to be lol… Started doing these for morale after all. If it’s still not okay for me to post this sort of thing I can stop though.

Anyways… well! Mikoto gained pretty much everything he lost yesterday in the past few hours. Fancy that. Good job Mikoto innos! Let’s keep it up! Breaking even is great, but y’know… it would be even greater to see him continue to go up right? 😏 Please? 😏 For him?

[August 19] Mikoto’s innocent percentage

Welcome back, Fuuta T3. Didn’t miss you. (╥_╥) Back to focusing on whether Mikoto loses enough in a day for it to matter rather than whether he gains.

He didn’t lose enough by the way… only 0.12%… but still too close for comfort, yeah? Keep voting him innocent. The next few days are going to be rough.

Tier list based on how much I like the characters

Sorry Tanuki I stole your idea because I’m bored. Jackalope is somewhere in purgatory because he’s evil and I hate him but he’s such a fun character to watch…

My opinions keep shifting over time, it’s crazy. Well, except for Mikoto being at the top. He’s inevitable. Didn’t know what to put for Haruka I’m just not a fan of him personally lol

[August 17] Mikoto’s innocent percentage (❓)

????? Idk how in the world we broke even today, but god bless. I thought he was going to go down between resets. That’s Mikoto for you ig. 🙏 Please continue to vote him innocent! Seeing him with that teal background would be amazing. A little less than two months left 🎶

Edit: [August 18] His percentage at reset is 58.54%, for posterity. Not doing a fresh post today. 👍 If anyone checks back here, reminder to vote him inno. Gonna be a rough few days.

[August 16] Mikoto’s innocent percentage

Everybody is going to be normal today right? Yeah.

Remember to vote Mikoto innocent! We’re going up slowly at the moment, but that’s due to the influx of guilty voters so it can’t be helped. Keep on voting him inno!

[August 15] Mikoto’s innocent percentage

I know what’s happening, you know what’s happening, we all know what’s happening. Guilty voters are about to become very very loud so make sure you vote innocent everyday. I knew this would come eventually, but so soon… Oh well. I’d wager the next few days will be pretty intense, so stay on top of it. Don’t get demotivated if you see more percentage wobbling lmao. I will take slow growth as a W during more heated periods 100%.

[August 14] Mikoto’s innocent percentage (Keep it up Mikoto innos!)

Edit: As anticipated, the guilty votes are a bit more aggressive today, so make sure you vote innocent! Like actually. Lmao. As he gets higher, guilty voters will react more intensely. Keep that in mind.

Wowowow. He was at 58.50% when I fell asleep and gained a lot in the past… 10-12ish hours, I guess? Well, 0.06% is a lot for 10-12 hours in my heart.

Anyways, keep it up Mikoto innos!! Keep voting him innocent!! Let’s go let’s go let’s go! We need to avoid the abrupt percentage loss that previous prisoners have experienced towards the end of their trials, and also build up as much of a cushion as possible in case it DOES happen.

On that note… the gap is really closing right now, huh? We have a shot at getting a decently high percentage if we stay consistent. About two months left of his trial… A lot could change!

[August 13] Mikoto’s innocent percentage

If, on July 15th, somebody had grabbed me by the shoulders and said, “Style, Mikoto is actually possibly maybe in the running for third highest inno btw” I would have thought they were nuts. However, that’s what’s happening right now… for some reason. Am I complaining? No. Am I certain this will hold? Also no. But what a wonderful, wonderful thought it is.

Continue voting Mikoto inno everyday! 0.10% growth from yesterday iirc! I remember watching Mikoto plummet like it was yesterday. Let’s work together and make sure that doesn’t happen again. 🙏 And, uh, make sure you stick it out until the end. All the way until his poll closes. Because we’re seeing what happens when you don’t in real time right now and it’s bad. Hahaha…🥲

Out of every trial this season, which is your favorite so far?

Unsurprisingly, my favorite T3 thus far has been Mikoto’s. I used to hate it, now I adore it. The One is peak, I’ve looped Requiem almost 1,000 times at this point, Chimera’s cover is amazing… There are more personal reasons as well ofc. I can see myself in Mikoto a lot, barring the obvious. Hoping more people come around to his T3 eventually but I lowkey doubt that’ll happen LMFAO. Maybe someday…

How about you guys?

[August 12] Mikoto’s innocent percentage ‼️

After two slow days, we FINALLY have a 0.12% increase between resets. Yes!!! Good job Mikoto innos!!!! I’m so excited. We might be close to 59% by the time his interrogation starts. I don’t wanna jinx anything, knocking on wood so hard right now, but still. Let’s be hopeful… cautiously optimistic… Just keep voting innocent everyday!! Don’t get comfy!

(Also ngl it’s a little funny that these posts become a chatroom every now and then)

[August 11] Mikoto’s innocent percentage (reminder to vote him inno!!)

Bit of a slow growth again and his interrogation is soon so I’m gonna have to start cheerleading again ig

Please remember to vote him innocent everyday!! We are still going up everyday, but it is slowing down a bit. As Mikoto’s percentage gets higher, there will be more guilty voters returning most likely because of percentage wars so seriously we’ve got to lock in lmao

All the same, we’re doing well, so good job! Just don’t get comfortable ever

Parts of Mikoto’s T3 where John is present?

I’m wondering if I’m missing any. So far I have: the rap in Requiem, the bridge of Requiem, and the harmonies at the end of Chimera. And as far as the bridge goes, I’m unsure if it’s just the first two lines being John’s or all four. Leaning towards the former.

Visually, the shines in Mikoto’s eye towards the end of the MV indicate his presence as well. Side note, the fact that the lyrics are “I haven’t lost anything, I haven’t changed, but” over that specific shot kills me. Like actually kills me dead. My heart 💔

Which MILGRAM songs have you listened to the most this year?

Looked at my Replay 2026 and the top five are all MILGRAM at the moment so now I’m wondering… Which ones have you guys listened to the most yourselves?

Requiem is en route to being my #1 this year, I think. Idk how many hundreds of times I listened to Double, but I’ve listened to Requiem probablyyyyy over 800 times by now. Count your days ig

[August 9] Mikoto’s innocent percentage ‼️

A 0.1% increase from yesterday yay! Reminder to go vote Mikoto innocent!! I wonder if he’ll be close to 59% by the time his interrogation rolls around?? He’s still increasing so fast… Lord

He’s well above the point where he needs to lose 0.1% per day to get below 50% which is very nice. ~0.123% currently actually. Very very very good spot to be in, though we’ll have to see how his interrogation and Kotoko’s trial beginning impact him

Thinking about this Mikoto art lately

Only one of the Mikotos (John, presumably…) has blood on his hands. I remember thinking that Mikoto (僕) consciously killed one or two people, but in retrospect, nah. Makes sense that John was conscious for all of ‘em. A lot of us theorists were overthinking it. Comes with the territory, I guess. I did always believe that John would have been out for more by far so it’s not too jarring to me.

Very glad the “blood on his hands” imagery here isn’t a 100% literal reflection of how Mikoto’s case was handled though. It’s for the best that they’re treated as one whole with collective accountability. The fandom’s whodunnit was a bit obnoxious since it doesn’t matter in the end. Mikoto killed and that’s that. Shoutout to the writers for rejecting that debate.

I hope there’s another bout of official fanart. This is probably my favorite Mikoto art to come from the series ever lol

“Mikoto’s report says he had a good/happy childhood!” Not necessarily…

I’m currently reading through “A study on dissociative identity disorder in Japan” and it has me thinking about the discourse surrounding Mikoto’s childhood. The way his upbringing is described in his report has sparked a lot of backlash. I believe that the extent of it has been unreasonable.

In this post, I’ll be sharing excerpts from the dissertation with page numbers. I’m on mobile right now so I’m just gonna use italics as a substitute for blockquotes. Just imagine a blockquote is there ok lmao

(The essay I’m working on will use more sources ofc, but these are thoughts that have been prompted by this specific paper among other knowledge I have.)

I’ll put the part of Mikoto’s report in question here for sake of total transparency:

Kayano Mikoto grew up in a typical, middle-class home. He was sociable, well-liked, picked up most things with ease and excellence, and was generally a well-behaved and easy-going child.
“He was blessed with many friends and always drew a crowd. He knew how to read a room, how to maintain relationships, and had the ability to make everyone feel at ease. One could say he had a gift, a natural-born talent.”

Here are the key traits of his childhood that are described: middle-class socioeconomic status; sociable and well-liked; had a lot of friends and could impress others; gifted (able to acquire new skills easily); well-behaved; a gift for making others feel at ease, reading the room, and maintaining relationships.

Funny how his parents aren’t mentioned here at all. All of the things described here are outside of his home, or within him. All we know about his parents, to my knowledge, is that they divorced and Mikoto cares deeply for his mother. He doesn’t recall much about his father. We don’t need to have those facts restated for them to still be true.

What happens inside a typical middle-class home can be extremely ugly. Kids from typical middle-class homes can develop DID. Many do. That aspect of his report doesn’t disprove anything. Kids who develop DID can also be social and have friends. They can pick up skills easily and be gifted. They can mind their manners. They can have good moments. These things aren’t mutually exclusive.

A kid being able to inexplicably make people feel welcome, manage relationships, and read the room by itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you combine it with Mikoto’s need for conformity as well as his adult behaviors, it starts to paint a different picture. It’s pretty clear that Mikoto was forced to take on the “man of the house” role from a young age.

“The average Japanese family is patriarchal, has interdependent roles, and adheres strictly to traditional norms. Conflict is minimized by suppression of overt emotion, and guilt and shame are used to control family members. The family has priority over the individual; failures in school, in employment, or in mental health, is a failure of the family, and disrupts the harmony of family life (Dana, 1993). (p. 24)”

“Although males in Japanese culture experience more freedom than the females, they nevertheless live under the same authoritarian rule of the male head of the family. In the Japanese home, the ‘household itself was considered to be far more important than its individual members. Individual opinions were not valued, and every member had to consider the harmony of the family first and foremost’ (Davies & Ikeno, 2002, p..217). (p. 84)”

Beyond potentially being something akin to a fawn response, it’s also a manifestation of cultural values instilled in Mikoto. Japanese culture prioritizes blending in lieu of sticking out. I’ve heard this likened to the old adage “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down” before.

“Within an interdependent culture, the expression of one’s desires, private emotions and personal goals is judged to disturb the equilibrium of harmony and, therefore, to be immature. Thus, one’s primary task is the subjugating and restraining of one’s autonomy. The individual’s sense of self in an interdependent society finds meaning only in terms of one’s interpersonal relationships, for it is only in relationship that the self has meaning. There is a yearning for a sense of belonging, for dependency, and reciprocity. The sense of self is fluid, and chameleon-like, changing itself to conform to its relational environment (Markus & Kitayama, 1991). As Triandis (1995) puts it, ‘The public self is an extension of the collective self’ ( p..350). (p. 26)”

Many Japanese DID cases cite emotional abuse and trauma (neglect, abandonment) as being the catalyst for the disorder’s development. Mikoto having this much responsibility and pressure thrown at him in his youth, coupled with the divorce itself, is absolutely enough to traumatize someone and can be related to neglect. Though the reasons behind the divorce are kept vague, the way Mikoto constantly parrots strict social expectations is telling. Someone had to drill that into his head as a kid.

It’s been very difficult to witness criticisms of how Mikoto’s childhood is described because they often operate off of a rigid understanding of what can cause DID. There is no universal barometer of trauma for this—cases are diverse, especially across cultures. There’s also the fact that DID notoriously suppresses stressful memories from childhood. Mikoto wouldn’t remember the catalyst for his DID’s development. Whatever that breaking point was, it’s largely inaccessible to him at the moment. This can make it appear as though he had a normal childhood, especially when we’re dealing with unreliable narrators all over the place.

Due to how DID functions, it’s likely Mikoto wouldn’t be able to provide substantial details about his upbringing. He might, we’ll just have to see, but it would be entirely realistic for him to brush off questions and say he had a good childhood. I myself used to say “I have it easy compared to most pwDID, barely anything happened!” for a long time because my brain plays keep-away with memories and knowledge that would indicate otherwise. The extent to which DID walls off memories is nothing to scoff at. You legit cannot access them as certain parts. It’s blank.

Jumping into traumatic memories first is also a terrible idea for any pwDID. The book I use in therapy, Coping With Trauma-Related Dissociation, actually says this in an early chapter:

“It is important for you to know that in your journey toward understanding and coping with your dissociation, you do not need to focus immediately on the painful past. Rather, the first goal is to make sense of the dissociative aspects of yourself and to learn to deal more effectively with them so you can feel better in your daily life. Resolving the past comes after you learn to cope with your external and your inner world (p. 9).”

The way Mikoto’s T3 revolves around his acceptance of having DID, his adult life, and integration in general is more accurate to real life than if he were to have sat down in “The One” and spilled his guts about his childhood to Es. There’s not really much to spill yet. Maybe we’ll get more explicit information from the interrogation, it’d be fine, but I wouldn’t count on it. As it stands, this aspect of Mikoto’s writing is true to life, and it’s very likely that his DID developed in childhood. In most cases, the disorder masks itself until adulthood anyways. It’s notoriously difficult to observe and catch.

As for what happened with John, he’s simply a recent split. Alters can split later on in life due to extreme stress. Once the disorder develops, the possibility of splitting never really goes away. You just learn to manage your symptoms well enough to prevent it from happening.

I’m going to end this with an excerpt from “The One” that I believe is very relevant to this conversation:

ミコト 「挫折って初めてだったからさ。それを認められなくて」
MIKOTO: It was my first time facing failure, you see. I just couldn’t accept it.

ミコト 「……プライドがあるんだ。僕にも」
MIKOTO: …I had pride. Even someone like me.

エス 「体を壊してでもなのか」
ES: Even if it means destroying your body?
[T/N: There’s a nuance that ES is asking MIKOTO if it means he himself is the one destroying his own body as shown by the (o) particle.]

ミコト 「体なんてとっくの昔に壊れてた」
MIKOTO: My body was already broken a long time ago.
[T/N: There’s implications that: (1) his body was broken by others/someone else; (2) the destruction/brokenness was done unto him, via the (ni) particle.]

Thank you for reading. :) If this is messy, that’d be because it’s really early in the morning and I’m sleepy lol

———

Edit:

milgram-en uploaded a translation of Mikoto’s report after I posted this. I want to include that here as well, since I cited the official translation above.

榧野尊は一般的な中流家庭で育った。
Mikoto Kayano was raised in a family part of the most common socioeconomic class: the middle-class.

社交的で人当たりも良く、何をやらせても人並み以上にはできる器用さで、幼い頃から手のかからない子供であった。
He was sociable and easy to get along with, having a natural talent for excelling at anything he tried. From a young age, he had been a low-maintenance child.

友人も多く、尊の周りには常に人が集まっていた。他人との適切な距離感、空気を読み、場を和ます能力。天性の資質といえるようなものだった。
Mikoto had many friends and there were always people gathered around him. He had the ability to maintain a proper level of distance from others, how to read the room, and the ability to soothe the atmosphere. It seemed to be qualities that came naturally to him.

[Translation source: milgram-en on Tumblr]

This makes me feel even more confident in my interpretation. The phrasing embellishes his childhood far less. I believe my thoughts in this post are still compatible with the official translation as well, don’t get me wrong here—it’s just that this translation team has a very good reputation, and I wanted to put their work here too.

I’d like to point out how “typical, middle-class home” is translated as “a family part of the most common socioeconomic class: the middle class” instead. If we go by this translation, “typical” is more in reference to the middle-class being most prominent wherever he grew up. This doesn’t say anything about what went on in his household. Mikoto’s social skills also revolve a lot around people-pleasing here. Alongside the phrase “low-maintenance child”, it makes me wonder just how small he had made himself.
