Does missing early funding push researchers out of emerging fields?

Title. For example, if a computational biology professor applied to a major flagship grant for an "emerging area" -- e.g., the NSF 2009 “OMICS Technologies" and 2026 "Synthtic Micobiomes" grants -- but were rejected, would they typically continue working in that area and apply for future grants? Or would the majority of profesors in that position pivot towards other topics (and if so, what are the primary reasons for doing so)? In comp bio, for instance, I could imagine costs of data generation / access & the need for specialized infrastructure being reasons that profesors would not continue pursuing an emerging area without dedicated funding.

I’m asking as a student interested in becoming a professor who would like to work on emerging areas as they first develop, around the time the first major flagship funding programs are launched. Thus, I’m trying to understand whether it’s realistically possible to enter a “hot” field early even if one misses the first major funding round, or whether those initial flagship grants often determine who can meaningfully participate.

Would be especially interested in seeing how this differs between i) wet-lab research, ii) data-intensive dry-lab fields (e.g., computational biology and computational social science), and iii) more theoretical disciplines.

Can you have tinnitus without hearing constant music in your head?

Hi all, 21M here who has had tinnitus in their right ear all their life and who also constantly hears music in their head. I know the music is internally generated, not external, so I don’t mean musical hallucinations — just a noisy brain.

Some doctors have told me the constant music may fade with age, but I’m unsure whether tinnitus affects that. Does anyone here have tinnitus without constantly hearing music in their head?

CMV: AGI is inevitable, thus developing it now is safer

If AGI is basically inevitable due to state / military incentives (even if developed secretly decades from now), why isn’t capabilities research now the safer option? It seems that earlier AGI may be preferable because compute is still relatively centralized; if AGI arrives much later, powerful compute may be ubiquitous and impossible to govern.

The main counterarg I can think of is “not working on AI right now meaningfully lowers the chance AGI is ever developed.” But that seems less likely to me than AGI indeed being inevitable (whether now or at some far away time in the future) and eventually emerging later in a world (say like 60 years later) with ubiquitous compute and effectively impossible containment, thus the risk is not worth it.

Would deeply appreciate any compelling counterarguments.
