[NA] My first Bracelet in 5 years!

I figured since I took such a long hiatus from bracelet making, I'd start with something easy... the classic chevron! Its still a w.i.p. but I forgot how much fun this was 🙂

IP law clerks/legal assistants in Ontario, Canada?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if there were any IP law clerks/legal assistants in Ontario Canada who would be willing to connect. I am a docketing clerk at an IP law firm and I would really like to get your perspective on how you got into an IP role, what qualifications you had, how you landed your current role, job prospects, fav part of the job etc.

I know there are alot of IP paralegals in this reddit, but alot of what I see is input based on the US, and I would really like input from those in Canada (no offense!)

No pay at Bloor-Yonge

Today at around 4:30 pm, I noticed that all the presto booths were free-entry, we didn't have to tap our presto card at Bloor-Yonge station to gain entry. Does anyone know why this might be? Did it have anything to do with Line 2 and the fire?

UGH

Today had to be the most annoying asf ride. First of all the bus I usually take had a detour because of the police officer's procession. So that bus ride WHICH SHOULD HAVE TOOK 30-40 MIN took 1 HOUR. Then I had to take the line 2 subway which should've been a 20-30 min ride turns into FRICKING 40 min because of some incident that happened on the next train at Old Mill Station like at this point I question my sanity. My job starts at 9 am, I was late, by 20 min. I leave home at 7 AM TO REACH MY 9 AM JOB and its because of some idiot on board trains, which makes it extremely annoying to ride the ttc and i have to be late. It has happened so few but the gew times it does happen gets extrmely annoying cause I HATE being late. Its even worse in the afternoons because Line 2 westbound sucks to be on between Old Mill and Kipling Stations. The subway crawls like a snail. Then the bus I take, has problems of its own.

Anyways... I am very angry... I probably should have just posted this on a vent sub but... oh well. Maybe I need to allocate 3 hours to a commute, leave home by 6 am, then I just won't have a damn life.

Ok but how lazy can you get?

Tell me why, the lawyers can't wash their own dishes, OR AT LEAST load it into the dishwasher and pack it themselves? Tell me WHY assistants/paralegals are assigned a week to load/unload the dishwasher, put more drinks in the fridge, wipe down the counters? LIKE OMG I did not sign up to be your cleaner lady. I dont use the drinks in your fridge, so why should I refill it? I dont use your dishes in your cupboard, so why do I have to load and unload them? TF the only thing I use is the fricking microwave for 5 minutes a week.

Too much Paper

The amount of paper at my law firm is ridiculous! I work at an IP boutique in Ontario Canada and the amount of paper and papercuts/paper injuries I've had since working there is nuts.

They have have this huge open space with drawers filled with files. Each file has so much of paper. There are files from the 1950s, the 80s that never get destroyed or scanned. I once saw a file from the fricking Soviet Union. They have a hallway lined with IP law textbooks, some as old as the late 1800s.

They print everything and I MEAN EVERYTHING. You'd think printing emails would be ridiculous, but nope. Its part of my job function to sort the emails that get printed and give it to someone else to find the physical file that email gets attached to. Files get misfiled easily. Trademark renewals get their own little spikes that, if lost, you really have no way to track what was going on between client and agent.

I have boxes of completed renewal spikes just sitting in my office. Paper wouldnt be annoying if they didnt injure me. I get paper cuts, staple scrapes almost every week. Today I accidentally bumped into a shelf lined with spirals of books that had the paper facing out so it was sharp and cut my arm ( think larger paper cut type wound) its annoying.

Tell me this isnt the norm for every law firm?! This is my first job in the field of law and oml the amount of paper is absurd. Tell me AT LEAST y'all dont have to hunt for files or print out emails?! Please 😭

Question about the Profession

Hi everyone,

I am a licensed paralegal currently employed as a law clerk. I was wondering what other licensed paralegals are currently doing for work. Are you working at a law firm, LAO, government, or self employed? What areas of law are you working in, and do you feel that the salary represents the years of experience you have?

I have these questions mostly because I just want to know the outlook for the paralegal/law clerk/legal assistant profession and I don't think I can find that on Google or just by looking at job postings.

Possible Strike

Just a question, if there were to be a strike starting May 16, will buses and subways operate or is it a complete strike where its 100% shut down? I am somewhat confused. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi everyone,

Essentially, I'd like to know the difference between being in a legal support role in the U.S vs in Canada. I am a paralegal in Ontario, which is a bit different than being a paralegal in other parts of Canada and the U.S since we could work independently and represent clients in court. I see alot of comments on this subreddit where paralegals are making close to six figures in salary, and sometimes above that as well, it would translate into more money in canadian dollara. When I look at job postings for Ontario at least, the salaries usually are around 50k -60k with more experienced paralegals making maybe around 70-90k. Paralegals in Ontario could earn more id they operate independently.

I'd like to know the basic difference in support roles across both countries. Does it have to do with billable hours in the U.S vs none in Canada, or the more competitive nature in U.S law causing higher salaries or just the area of law? Maybe the way our governments are structured?

. I'd like to hear your opinions on this. Thanks!
