Incoming Freshman

Incoming Freshman

Hi! I’m going to be an incoming freshman this fall, and I was wondering how far apart these classes are from each other. Most of mine are only about 10 minutes apart, so I’m a little nervous about making it to class on time. Is that usually enough time to get across campus?

Dental Assisting Program Length: 15 Weeks vs. 12 Months

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on becoming a dental assistant for a couple of years before applying to dental hygiene school, and I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on short vs. long dental assisting programs.

The two options I'm looking at are a 12-month program at a technical college for about $3,000 or an 11- or 15-week dental assisting program that's around the same price. My thinking is that if I choose the shorter program, I could complete it while I'm taking my dental hygiene prerequisites, start working sooner, and save up money before applying to hygiene school.

Has anyone here gone through an accelerated program? Did you feel prepared when you started working, or do you think the longer program was worth the extra time?

I'd love to hear any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

Dental Assisting before Dental Hygiene Schol

I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are on becoming a dental assistant before applying to dental hygiene school.

I’ve heard that having dental assisting experience can make your application more competitive and help you stand out, but I’m not sure how much of a difference it actually makes.

For some context, I graduated high school early, so I’m starting my prerequisites at 17 at a community college before transferring to a university with a dental hygiene program. So I feel like I have a lot of time to decide what I should end up doing.

There’s a 10-week dental assisting program in my area, and I’m wondering if it’s worth doing. My thinking is that it would give me experience in the field and provide a source of income while I’m doing prerequisites.

For those of you who have gone through the application process (or are hygienists), do you think becoming a dental assistant first is worth it? Did it help you get accepted, or would you recommend focusing on prerequisites instead?

I’d love to hear your experiences and advice!
