We are complex biochemical systems: a vent

I'm just venting.

I've had the migraines mostly under control for months now with diet and sandomigran and Botox.

Four weeks ago they flared up badly and I've hardly had a day without migraine. I've been trying everything I could think of to work out what changed or what I might suddenly be reacting to or deficient in.

Finally got blood tests and my GP noted that my thyroid was a little low and I should increase my thyroid meds dosage. This was weird since I've been on the same dosage forever...

... And the penny dropped. I'd finished the bottle of meds five weeks ago but I'd found a few in an old bottle at the back of the meds drawer and was using those up before getting more. I checked. They're two months past the expiry date. For most meds I'm on this wouldn't be an issue but...

I got fresh meds this morning and the migraine is disappearing fast.

I have this balancing act with every one of my dozen ailments. It just never ends. Aaaaaugh.

Vent over. Thanks :)

Cleaning old moka pot: what would you do?

My partner loves his decades-old moka pot. It's been getting harder and harder to get it to actually make coffee so I came here and discovered there's so much more to cleaning them than the quick rinse it usually gets....

Filter and funnel have now been cleaned out, safety valve is unclogged, and I've ordered a new gasket and filter plate. My question is about cleaning the lower chamber.

It's stainless steel. I can't easily get Cafiza here (Australia) so I used washing soda in warm water with a soft toothbrush and got the top chamber back to a nice shine, but the coating on that was much less consistent: there were large patches of the steel showing through already.

The bottom chamber has had the same amount of soaking but it stubbornly still has a black coating fading down to a noticeable patina at the bottom.

I'm tempted to leave it as it is and celebrate the build up of years of use. The colour is so baked on that I'm worried I wouldn't get it completely clean if I tried and it'd just look patchy.

What would you do? Would you leave it as is? And if you'd try to clean it: what would you use?

Canberra rally against NDIS cuts: Saturday 2pm

https://facebook.com/events/s/no-to-ndis-cuts-canberra-rally/1693522055312682/

There's more details on the Facebook page but this rally is specifically aimed at the ACT Government. NDIS cuts if they go through will put more funding and management burden on the state and territory governments.

The federal government's messaging that they're tackling fraud in the NDIS doesn't hold up... 98% of the projected savings come from cutting funding to disabled people.

There's the same number of Australians on the DSP as on the NDIS (roughly). That doesn't look like there's 240,000 people who should be kicked off the NDIS, but that's the plan unless we fight back.

Would love to see a few Redditors turning up to protest for disability rights. If you can't make it there's an option to put your name down for representation, and there's a federally-focused rally the weekend after as well. I'll put details in comments.

Basket of slipperies: NSW, Australia

A good haul towards the end of the season here... It's been too dry but recent rain brought these out. Suillus species, enough to fill my dehydrator.
