CMV: Gen X deserves far more criticism than Gen Z.

People love hating on Gen Z.
“They’re lazy.”
“They’re entitled.”
“They’re on TikTok too much.”

Fine. Criticize them if you want.

But if we’re asking who’s actually been running the world for the last 20 years, it isn’t Gen Z.

It’s Gen X.

They’re the CEOs, cabinet ministers, bureaucrats, executives, VCs etc. They’re the people making the hiring decisions, writing the laws, and deciding what gets funded.

Baby Bs built many of today’s broken systems, but Gen X had decades to fix them. Instead, they optimized them.

Housing became an investment instead of shelter. Healthcare became an industry instead of a service. Education became a debt machine.

Every company squeezed workers harder in the name of “shareholder value.” Climate goals became PowerPoint presentations. Everything became more efficient at extracting money, attention, and data.

That’s Gen X’s real legacy.

People often describe Gen X as pragmatic. I think they were managerial. They didn’t create the chaos. They brought structure to it. They took broken systems and made them run smoothly instead of asking whether those systems deserved to exist in the first place.

They perfected the machine rather than redesigning it. The people actually holding the steering wheel are mostly Gen X.

History usually remembers whoever starts the fire.

It should also remember who kept feeding it.
