My ratings of physical books I have read over the years

Since my previous post regarding the ratings of books I have read on my kindle was well received, following up with my ratings of physical books I have read over the years.

I have read too many to count however, these are the ones I remember.

Most of these I have borrowed from libraries and bought from book stores ( Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai have some of the best book stores!) .

Pls note, these ratings are based on the time of my life I read them.

Read 67 Books since May this year and this is my rating list for each of them

Bought my Kindle in May and that has rekindled my love for reading. Since then I have read 67 Books, attached ratings for all (This is my personal opinion of course). So glad I have discovered new authors like Charlie Donlea, Loreth Ann White, John Marrs, Suzanne Redfearn, A.R Torre etc.

8 Nights Kenya Trip - Highly memorable and mesmerising Experience

Husband and I retired from our corporate jobs and first thing we did is booked our bucket list Kenya Trip for Sep.

Itinerary:

21st Sep : Mumbai to Nairobi (Overnight in Nairobi)

22nd Sep : Departed Nairobi for Masai Mara - 6 hrs travel by road, fairly scenic although the road is patchy in some parts. Visited the Masai village (Ok experience and expensive according to me).

23rd Sep : Full day safari in Masai Mara. Unreal experience. Sighted lions, cheetah, leapords, zebras, wildebeest, ostriches, wild buffalos, warthogs, elephants, giraffes etc. Most sightings were from close range and the overall park is beautiful with amazing Savannah views and vibes.

24th Sep : Balloon safari, the first of our lives. This experience is unique and super fun with a sun rise view that is to die for. Had a great experience followed by a bush breakfast with champagne, loads of food, the works! Met a lovely french couple who did not speak a word of English but somehow we managed to communicate 😄 We continued with an evening land safari as well which was similarly exciting as the one on 23rd with amazing sightings. Also, saw the great migration which took about 2 hrs of waiting but was totally worth it!

25th Sep : Travelled to Naivasha and did a boat safari. Again, amazing experience with proximity to hippos, eagles etc. the lake is pristine and gorgeous .

26th Sep to 27th Sep : Travelled to Amboseli. The first view of Mount Kilimanjaro brought tears to my eyes. The mountain is unique and changes colour throughout the day depending on weather conditions and is a sight to behold. The safaris in Amboseli were also unique with multiple sightings of elephants and myriad species of animals and birds. Most special was the carpet of flamingos we viewed.

28th Sep : Left for Mumbai.

It's very difficult to articulate the beauty of Kenya but it is a must visit destination and for us a life changing experience. This is the trip I will look back on for the rest of my life as the gold standard of a travel experience.

Total cost : 9000 dollars

Private vehicle for the 2 of us throughout the tour and 4 star hotel stays.

The people of Africa are amazing and make the trip that much more special.

Highly recommended!

I am going to immediately DNF any book in which the female protagonist is "terrified"🙄😕

So so fed up of this trope and the inner monologue of a "terrified" woman who will do the stupidest things instead of having a mature conversation or immediately call for help. IYKYK 😏

Stopped watching after season 9, too repetitive and boring

Loved this show till season 8, however, season 9 is a massive dip in quality and regurgitates the same storylines.

  1. Patients who never listen to the doctors advise.

  2. Doctors never honour patient wishes (The Parkinsons character was intolerable)

  3. Abby, her crazy family and her saviour complex 🙄

  4. Carter remains the poor little rich boy.

  5. Luka and his misplaced rage. There is only so much of the handsome brooding character that one can take.

  6. Corday and Romano are sidelined and not sure the writers knew what to do with them.

  7. Susan is a shadow of her former self.

  8. Hardly any interesting medical cases.

  9. For me Kerry remained the only interesting character although her story also gets repetitive after a point.

  10. Most doctors are running around but never finish even small procedures, keep telling patients "I will be right back", drives me crazy 😏

Such a sorry fall for a good show 😕

Preparation for FIRE (46F) Useful Tips

I (46F) finally pulled the plug on my high paying but soul sucking corporate job. Things I did in the last 4 years to prepare:

  1. Got my daughter to complete her university degree in India and sent her for an international internship post that (Spent 10 lakhs rather than 50 lakhs if she had also studied abroad). She is well settled now in Mumbai.

  2. Completed home renovations and upgraded all home appliances using the best quality material and brands. Will hopefully have no major home improvement expenses for 10 years.

  3. Got the best family health insurance I could afford (~75k per year)

  4. Got full body check ups done for the family and we are on an exercise, diet and medicine regimen which should keep us fit as far as possible.

  5. Split corpus of 6.5 cr in growth and fixed income assets with the ability to reinvest at least 50% of income generated per month post expenses.

6.Using additional unaccounted "extra" funds from leave encashment and gratuity to treat ourselves to an international family holiday which has been on our bucket list for a while.

  1. Bought a club Mahindra membership during the highly discounted COVID period which protects our domestic holidays from inflation to a certain extent for the next 20 years ( Love their properties and service)

While retirement is personal and highly individualized to a person's situation, there are things that can be done to prepare much in advance which can give you additional measure of comfort and preparedness.
