I read Apt Pupil by Stephen King and I thought it was the most boring book ever. This was my first introduction to horror books and I was pretty disappointed. What recommendations do you have for truly scary books?

I don’t know if it helps but when I go watch scary movies, I hate that ghosts and demons nonsense. I like psychological thriller movies. Movies where it could possibly happen in real life. I want a book like that. A really scary book. I read lots of comments here on Reddit saying that Apt Pupil was super terrifying and how they couldn’t think properly after reading it but it literally did nothing for me. I had to force myself to finish the book because I thought it was super boring and this was my first horror book ever. So any recommendations?

I LOVED Molka by Monika Kim! 🤏🏻 I wish we had more South Korean thrillers! 😢

South Korean thrillers hit soooo well for me but we just don't have enough of them. Give us more! 👏🏻

looking for recommendations🥰

hi!! i'm just getting into the book community and would love some recommendations!
i made it a goal this year to start reading a couple of books each month. so far I've read a lot of FM books because I know she's a pretty easy author to ease into reading. what I like most about her books is that they grab my attention, they're pretty fast-paced, and the chapters are short. i don't know why, but shorter chapters make it so much easier for me to keep picking up a book.
i'd love to branch out beyond FM, so I'm looking for:
psychological thrillers or suspense
fast-paced stories that keep you hooked
short (or at least relatively short) chapters
and plot twists are always a plus:)
one thing i'd appreciate avoiding is books with extremely graphic/descriptive violence against women or children, and explicit SA/r*pe if possible.
thanks in advance! i'd love to hear your favorites:))🫶🏼🫶🏼🥰🥰📖📖

Which psychological thriller had the most believable main character?

One thing I love about psychological thrillers is that the best ones aren’t just about twists, they make you genuinely care about the characters.

Which psychological thriller had the most believable or memorable main character for you?

It could be because they felt incredibly realistic, emotionally complex, or simply stayed with you long after you finished the book.

I’m always looking for character driven thrillers to add to my reading list, so I’d love to hear your recommendations.

What Are Your Favorites?

Hey yall! At the end of the month I’m going on vacation and I’m planning on spending all day by the pool reading, so I’d love to hear what everyone’s favorite thrillers are!

I admittedly don’t read as much as I like BUT I want to get back into it! So I don’t feel like I know enough about my specific likes to ask for recommendations 😅 I do know that thriller is my favorite genre though!

Thank yall in advance!

I loved The House Across The Lake (Riley Sager) except…

So I recently read The House Across The Lake and I really liked it… except for one of the twists being some sort of paranormal ghost stuff. It’s not that I don’t enjoy paranormal stuff but more so I’d want to go in expecting it instead of expecting a realistic thriller and getting “oh it’s just a ghost.” I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I went in knowing that it wasn’t a super realistic one.

With that being said, I am definitely interested in reading more of Riley Sager’s stuff! I’m hoping someone can fill me in on which (if any) of his other books have paranormal/ghosty stuff so I can be prepared. Any titles that include that stuff would also be helpful!

PS Hi mods I’m not sure if I used the right flair here and I tried to include my opinion in the title without a spoiler lol. Apologies if I did this wrong I suck at technology 😭

June books read & ratings

Don't Let Him In by Lisa Jewell
A gripping psychological thriller about a charismatic man whose secrets threaten to unravel multiple lives. As the story unfolds through different perspectives, trust becomes increasingly difficult to place. This book seemed very easy to guess and it definitely wasn’t my favorite by her.
My Rating: 2/5

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix
Set in the 1970s, this horror novel follows a group of young women who discover that magic may be the only way to reclaim their power. It's an unsettling blend of supernatural horror, friendship, and social commentary. I think Grady Hendrix is a hit and miss. I liked this one, but you definitely have to suspend any reality to actually read it 😅.
My Rating: 4/5

Delilah: An Under Your Scars Novella by Ariel N. Anderson
This companion novella revisits the Under Your Scars world through Delilah's perspective. It offers a deeper emotional look at her journey while expanding the story's darker themes. Heartbreaking, but definitely a great ending to the series.
My Rating: 5/5

Under Your Scars by Ariel N. Anderson
Exploring obsession, trauma, and morally gray characters. Expect an intense story filled with psychological tension and unexpected twists. This books is a trigger warning mess. It is not for the weak and is most definitely NOT a dark romance, but a tragedy. With all that being said, I still think of this book weeks after reading it. It was like Batman meets dark romance, if you read it you’ll know what I mean.
My Rating: 5/5

Count My Lies by Sophie Stava
A domestic thriller about a harmless lie that spirals into a dangerous web of deception. Hidden motives and shocking revelations keep the suspense building until the very end. I liked this book and didn’t guess the ending at all. Kinda gives me The Housemaid vibes.
My Rating: 4/5

Zero Day by David Baldacci
Army investigator John Puller is sent to solve a brutal murder in a quiet town hiding dangerous secrets. His investigation uncovers a conspiracy far greater than anyone expected. I read this for my A-Z challenge and I wouldn’t have thought to pick it up, but it was a good read. I’m prior military so I definitely understood it better.
My Rating: 4/5

Last Breath by Karin Slaughter
A fast-paced thriller featuring investigator Will Trent as he tackles a disturbing case with deeply personal consequences. The story combines forensic investigation with emotional depth and nonstop suspense. Burning alive is my biggest fear. This is the sequel to The Good Daughter, but in true Karin fashion you don’t have to read one to understand the other.
My Rating: 3.5/5

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter
After witnessing a shocking act of violence, Andrea discovers her mother has been hiding an extraordinary past. Her search for the truth leads to dangerous secrets spanning decades. I liked the way this made me think of a spy movie. The tv adaptation was TERRIBLE, so don’t read this then watch it 😂.
My Rating: 4/5

My Husband's Wife by Alice Feeney
A suspenseful psychological thriller centered on a marriage built on hidden truths and deception. Twists, secrets, and shifting perspectives keep readers guessing throughout. I actually liked this book. I know there is a lot of hate, but it was definitely a good revenge story.
My Rating: 3.5/5

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
Two sisters are forced to confront a traumatic childhood when another act of violence brings the past rushing back. A powerful blend of family drama, courtroom suspense, and mystery. Trigger warnings! I liked all of the different story telling in this book, think unreliable narrator.
My Rating: 3.5/5

Dystopian or sci fi thrillers

Hi All,

I'm looking for my next audiobook fix but I want something a little different from the conventional thriller.

I'd love something either set in the future, dystopian or sci fi but it needs to still have that suspense, twist style plot. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Her Last Breath by Taylor Adams

This is the 2nd book I read written by Taylor Adams. First one is No Exit. I loved every chapter of this! Do you have any recommendation on what to read next? I love Taylor’s writing style.

Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashini— who else has read this unhinged book?

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

I just finished the audiobook and cannot believe my ears. I was hate-listening to this novel after 30 minutes in and almost gave up a few times.

The main character was so insufferable up until the point it is revealed that she’s a full blown psychopath. For some reason, I don’t believe it was unbelievable but rather just… a lot of work for nothing??? I mean, yes, she got the house, but she still killed two people! Possibly 3 if she didn’t kill her husband at the end. I don’t see why she couldn’t just go back to Dotty somehow and try to get the paper somehow, someway.

When she was going to go back to the house, I thought maybe she was going to find the paper from his computer and hack in or something.

I feel like it tried to be like Gone Girl without being as clever. I don’t know. I was just… idk. Maybe I would have liked it better if I have read it. The audiobook narrator was great but maybe a little too great to the point I HATED the character so much.

A lot of cringe writing with this book, like Millenial trying to be Gen-Z while still being Millenial. And I say this as a Millenial.

Any other thoughts?

What is your favorite ultra niche and original thriller books? I need some recommendations.

I've read so much at this point that I genuinely can't find anything fresh anymore. Everything people recommend I've either already read or it sounds like something I've read. I want something truly niche, unexpected, the kind of book nobody talks about but should. Help me out.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware, am i the only one disappointed by this book??

What was that ending?

A five year old pushing her sister? There were no cameras covering the area where she supposedly fell? And after all those pages, the big reveal is that a child was sneaking into the attic and plotting against the nanny?

The whole story felt underwhelming. It easily could've been 200 pages shorter. There was so much unnecessary buildup, and the so called suspense just didn't feel convincing or logical to me.

I kept waiting for a twist that would make everything click, but instead I was left thinking, "That's it?"

Am I the only one who felt this way, or did anyone else find the ending disappointing?

I've just finished My Husband's Wife and in my opinion it's badly written that it made me angry

I have read books by Alice Feeney before and never felt this way about her writing. It feels to me like she has completely and coincidentally changed the write she writes to a more simplistic style.

My Husband's Wife feels to me like a bunch of randomly generated plots for three different books, all joined up with incredibly basic grammar and rhythm such as "Twilight is my happy place. That thin line of time that separates night from day, and day from night. Twilight. Sunset. Nightfall." I noticed that she also took famous quotes and reworded them (the most obvious ones: "I suppose we’re all actors on the stage of our own lives, some of us are just better at it than others." lifted from Shakespeare, and "Nobody wants to be themselves anymore, everybody wants to be somebody else. Including me." from Oscar Wilde; "Sometimes you just have to accept the shitty hand life dealt you and play to win anyway." from Bukowski)

I am not a picky reader and I'm not expecting War and Peace in this genre, but this book is, in my opinion, so bad. Am I the only one in this camp?

Need suggestion on good psychological thriller books

I have recently started reading and I like it more than I thought I would. Being a fan of psychological thriller movies, I am drawn to books of the similar genre. However the recent 2 reads - The silent patient and never lie were alright, didn’t blow my mind.
If I were to draw parallel with psychological thriller movies with great twist like shutter island, prestige, god’s crooked lines, etc.. what book would you recommend?

Some already that I have shortlisted are

  1. Sharp objects
  2. My husbands wife
  3. The perfect marriage
  4. Wrong place wrong time
  5. The only one left
  6. Hidden pictures

Open to any suggestions beyond this list as well.
Need a good book that demands a discussion!
