Is running rns already connecting me to the distributed backbone?

New here. I installed rns on a pi running at home which is always on.

Was reading https://reticulum.network/connect.html and it says "A global, distributed backbone of Reticulum Transport Nodes is being run by volunteers from around the world. ". Am I running one of these nodes and contributing to this backbone by running rns on the pi?

I have yet to develop my own use cases with my own devices and interfaces, but this fundamental question came up for me.

Failing miserably at a connection solder

I have been working on my first real solder project with practical use. I have two 5w speakers, an amplifier board, and a 3.5mm female jack input. The whole thing is fed by 5v.

A bit like the picture, but with a female jack instead.

Most connections are good. But one.

Instead of a battery, I wanted to use an old USB cable I have laying around which was teared apart anyway. Perfect for this.

The challenge: the cable is flexible, and the wires thin stranded. I soldered a solid wire to the board's end for + and -, and now I am trying to solder the stranded thin wires to the solid connector to the board.

That connection has failed miserably all my attempts. At least 5 different now. I think I should move to a different approach, possibly also because the usb cable which I plug in and out of a power strip with usb port, obviously suffers some physical strain.

Any suggestion?

Ok I am hooked about LoRa. Now what.

Please forgive the blunt title. I searched for days around. Found many sites explaining how utilities, smart cities and agriculture can benefit from LoRa.

Then I found the meshtastic page. And it says "Connect your phone or computer to a radio via Bluetooth, WiFi, or USB — and communicate with others across vast distances without any internet or cell service.".

It then jumps right into esp32 and the others.

But I am still confused.

I know I can use LoRa to have any sensor send data anywhere. But that's not my use case.

I am interested in emergency communication should the internet break down. Because some fool dropped a nuke. Or they declared the Internet their own. Or whatever.

I know I can't use meshtastic to share a 10 minute 4k video about some crazy police abuse or something. But maybe send messages sms style?

For such use case, what hardware is best suited, and how do I actually communicate?

Apologies if this all sounds stupid, I am used to self-study and find my way around, but this time I feel stuck.

What _is_ actually broken here?

This is a solar powered watering unit with two pumps. It suddenly stopped working. But I have a hard time understanding what actually is broken?

When connecting to power (usb power supply), points A and B have no power.

When connecting a power supply via alligator clips to C, the unit powers on.

But without any power connected at all, I can measure 3.8V at D.

I am puzzled. The last thing seems to suggest the battery is ok, even if it looks badly worn down.

Questions I also have: is the power supply only powering the battery, and the battery is actually powering the unit?

Why is there only one 2-wire connection to the battery? How does it solve charging vs powering over the same wires?

There is one chance for crypto to come back

Crypto lost all its appeal when AI appeared on scene. All the money got siphoned out there. It looked like profits there were bigger.

It _could_ so happen that as we see AI struggling (crumbling? Collapsing?), that crypto could become interesting again.

Caribbean travel advice

We are a couple, no kids. We usually are explorers, not just beach goers, and enjoy discovering nature, culture, local people and food.

However, I recently had a surgery. Nothing serious, but still. We are looking for some beautiful destination to hang out after I am allowed to freely move and eat everything again.

So this time, ideally it's a beautiful beach, not over exploited, but also not in the farthest corner. Ideally not too many people, but also not necessarily deserted. Not looking for the elusive "most beautiful caribbean beach", but certainly sand, clean water and (postcard) colors. We usually don't mind bumpy (boat) rides and long displacement, but this time it should probably be at reasonable reach. No luxury. But for sure a clean, comfortable place, not just a hut, so not the most frugal budget. Ideally not in a huge hotel. And possibly with options for local food at strolling distance (30mins is fine) or short easy displacement ride away. Not fine dining, just great food. No nightlife necessary, but we don't mind as long as tranquil sleep is ensured.

We are definitely not picky.

I tried to put down what we are looking for, I hope this doesn't translate to "this doesn't exist". Appreciate all suggestions.

Using a pi 3 with dac HAT for...?

This post will be crossposted to a couple of communities (e.g. raspberry_pi, musicmakers and possibly more).

I started this project with the illusion of running monome norns on it. After a few iterations, when starting all services, the thing froze. I concluded the resources are just not enough.

So here I am and would like to give this setup a cool use.

The basic idea is to run this as a helper supporting my main rig. It should not have to be synced in any way, just creating or triggering some sounds, possibly just non-rhytmical stuffnso I don't have to care about syncing. It's with a touch screen so ideally there's some level of interaction there.

Next step I tried to compile DIN Is Noise on it, but that also failed...

Suggestions?

Uploaded to admin instead of shared account

Last week I uploaded a bunch of pics to my admin account instead of the shared family account. I know there's sharing, but I do have to first create an album and then add all pictures to that album before I can share it, correct?

Is there some other way of moving all those files directly into the other account?

What is asterisk or freepbx?

I searched online and I couldn't understand what it actually offers. I was bored and looked around cool stuff to selfhost instead of watching tv :)

I understand what VoIP is, but what use cases would justify running such a thing in my homelab? What service can it offer me? I don't want to start any new VoIP business or so, which seems ehat people use it for. Just trying to see if there's something cool I could use it for that I didn't even know I wanted lol.

Probably not understanding it and not seeing the use case means I probably don't need nor want it, but now I am curious.

What's actually the difference between ethical and non-ethical?

I am an experienced dev. Experience as in years, doesn't have to mean I am good.

I have often times had the curiosity of fiddling around sites and stuff. Even more today, when I don't know how long I'll actually have a job. After all these years I strive to become truly independent.

But I feel like before trying to do anything, I should learn how to hide my traces. After all, if caught, how can you show you were ethical and not bad-intentioned? Can't this only be proven when you found something and you disclose it fairly? What if you didn't find anything?

Are there specific tutorials and/or tools about obscuring your actions?

I also made the observation that the true masters don't brag, are not easy to find, and also won't easily share what they know. Not necessarily out of not wanting to share, but because they also know that to truly learn you have to do yourself. That means that actually really good resources are hard to find.

Self-hosting stuff for when things get ugly

I know there's the awesome repos. I self-host several things already.

You may not agree, but looking at things we could very well be heading into totalitarian dystopia.

With such a backgroud, what software to run on my machine(s) at home to as much as possible be useful in such a scenario?

I am no great hacker, but I know one thing or two, from networking to encryption, from pgp to udp. But I was specifically thinking about this scenario. Maybe my question doesn't make sense, but i am confidente it might resonate with a few.
