This is not to be targeted towards other users or any identifiable individuals - with the exception of public figures who may be mentioned as long as the comment does not cross a line. The rant post is designed to be a lighthearted place to complain about things happening in the city, not a place to harass people.

We will have to cancel the post if harassment of individuals continues as we are seeing a lot of posts reported with report reasons that copy to admin.

Please be mindful of our subs rules when posting to this thread, and note that the mods will be watching very closely.

The nomination period for candidates to sign up for the October elections start today. It is looking like it may be a long and nasty battle in some wards so some rule clarifications. We have already seen some astroturfing from candidates

To keep r/Hamilton a space for genuine local discussion during the municipal election period, participation guidelines apply to political threads:

Participation Thresholds
Users must have established participation in r/Hamilton before commenting in election or other high‑controversy threads. This may include account age, prior activity in the sub, or comment karma. These thresholds help ensure discussions reflect genuine community voices.

Respectful Discourse

While you may dislike candidates, we expect discourse to be respectful. Any hateful language will result in a ban. We have seen a massive increase in name calling towards certain candidates based on their name, sexual orientation and while much of this has come from users with no history, some regulars are guilty of it too.

There are a number of controversial topics that will be the focus of the election. We remind users to research what powers council actually has vs provincial and federal responsibilities. Any dehumanizing language, hate etc will be removed and may result in a ban.

Any calls for policies that are illegal here will be removed (forced rehab/instutionalization, "reverse immigration" or just shipping people you don't deem worthy out of the city etc). Most of these are not within the city's powers anyway so a discussion you can have on other subs.

EDIT since it needs to be said: (non public figure) family of candidates are off limits, particularly children.

Limits on Promotional Activity
Content or behaviour that focuses disproportionately on a single candidate, campaign, or issue may be treated as self‑promotion or coordinated advocacy. As a guideline, if more than 10% of a user’s recent activity is centered on one candidate or issue, moderators may restrict participation.

No Coordinated or Inauthentic Engagement
Astroturfing, brigading, sealioning, or other forms of bad‑faith participation are not permitted. This includes repetitive questioning, ignoring answers, or posting patterns intended to overwhelm or derail discussion.

Topic Diversity Requirement
Users who only participate in election‑related threads, or who repeatedly post about a single candidate or issue, may have their comments removed to limit astroturfing.

Campaigning Restrictions
Direct campaigning, sharing promotional materials, and similar is limited to flaired candidates. If you are a candidate or represent a candidate, please reach out by modmail to verify and get a flair. (Exceptions obviously will be made for discussing claims made by candidates)

Disclosure of Affiliations
Users with any campaign must disclose it when participating in political discussions. Undisclosed affiliations may result in removal or bans. Again, reach out to verify and get a candidate flair but also disclose in comments/posts.

We will be hosting AMAs but not until after the nomination period ends and candidates are certified in late August

Key election dates:

  • May 1, 2026 - Nominations open
  • August 21, 2026 at 2 pm - Nominations close
  • August 24, 2026 - Candidates Certified
  • October 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 - Advanced Polls
  • October 26, 2026 - Election Day
