Housing code, the crisis, and a hypocritical point

Okay so we all know housing code with new builds is pretty intense. For those who aren’t aware, a newer building style of making super air tight homes with tons of insulation and triple layer windows is kind of nuts. It’s actively making housing affordable for younger Mainers who are choosing to leave the state due to a shortage of job and housing opportunities.

Now how is it that I can buy a house from like 1880-1920 and be grandfathered into the old code but if I wanted to build a new, safer, and better home but it will cost almost triple per square footage. What’s the deal?

Is it designed so poor people get stuck with unsafe/outdated housing so it’s their responsibility to fix it? All I’m saying is there should be some compromise with new builds as in, maybe thy should still allow houses to breath a little and maybe not be concerned with the r-value when half the ton is living in drafty homes with outdated wiring, plumbing, etc

Any programs/grants available for restoring a historical log cabin in rural Maine?

I have an opportunity to buy an old “Gun Club” from the 1930s. I have the logs available but I was wondering if there is any programs or funding available for restoring it? I’m just one single guy and a dog, the logs are ten minutes away and I plan on using an old small boat trailer to haul the logs. Renovations will occur either next summer or the summer after.

I’d like to hear feedback, both positive and negative about what to expect with this endeavor.

It’s only gay if it’s purple, sorta

First off I’d like to congratulate all the previously closeted rangers out there that have come to see themselves for who they are. Rangers are a beautiful thing.

Like i said before, grandpa had a whole bunch of different rangers, all 3 generations, each with their own name. The “gay” ranger was the epitome of the gay ranger. It was purple and it was the late 90s.

That said, I’m happy for everyone but you’re lowering my resale value so let’s go back to timing chains and shit.

Reminder to recycle periwinkle shells for hermit crab fighting season

If you find a stash of large empty periwinkles, please feel free to distribute them among the rocks at Higgins beach due to a shortage of periwinkle shells for the hermit crabs. They’ve begun to evict each other and there is not a large periwinkle shell to be found, sadly.

My grandpas “gay” ranger

Hey need some help here. Did they ever make a purple ranger?
The reason I ask is my grandpa was a Ranger head, pretty sure he had all the generations before getting a bigger truck. Anyway, at one point he had the “gay” Ranger and it got the name because it was purple. That said, I’ve never seen another one like it. Makes me wonder if it even existed or is the Mandela effect?
Gay is being used as a descriptive word, not meant to be derogatory.

Stan Fujii and Patagonia. Pop out?

Picked up this Patagonia “performance” longboard, I say that because it’s not quite an old school log. Doing some research I found S. Fujii is Stan Fujii. I’m wondering if he actually shaped this board or is it like a Stan Fujii model pop out?
This board has 3 logos, Point Blanks foam, New beginnings Surf Glass, and the old school Patagonia “slug” design. Not quite FCD, it’s a point blanks collab!

Can someone explain to me why Boru’s is still vacant?

Man I just saw that picture of Amigos and maybe I’ve seen something like that before, but it hit me that ever since Boru’s closed, the whole music/bar scene/outdoor area might just revolve around amigos.
I mean other places may have music but generally not the same vibe, generally more upscale which brings me back to Boru’s.
They could still be making a ton of money and it’s been a few years since I’ve been down there but last I knew the building was just sitting there.
Can anyone explain to me why Boru’s is vacant? Did they demolish it or does someone have plans to reopen it?
