Taking a remote job even if it’s not the direction you want to take your career in?

Hello,

I am someone who has always been career-driven and wherever the best work opportunity was, my life followed. I spent many years and money on school in this regard. However, right now, my “dream jobs” are not hiring. At least, they’re very few and far between, and while I was able to intern at them I am pessimistic that I could return in a full-time role. My current work is definitely not what I want to be doing, and it’s also 90% in-person and this has taken a toll on my health/goals outside of work.

I am considering an offer from a fully-remote company and the salary is higher than my current role. However, this job offer is not in the realm of my “dream jobs” and in fact might even be a step further away from them. However, I’m not happy with my current role anyway.

Would you all take a good remote job even if it’s not exactly what you want to do? The question might be different if I had kids or a family to support; I do not. So I can afford to be a little pickier about what type of work I do. I just don’t think my “dream” job is going to be easy to get. I’m scared that by accepting this job I keep getting further away from my ultimate career goals, and whether that’s worth the perks of being fully remote. Can anyone relate and any advice?

Thank you!

Beach day EXCITEMENT tips?

Hello! Does anyone else have a dog that is just SO EXCITED for the beach and won’t really settle down at one? Any training or management tips?

I go to beaches frequently and see people with dogs that calmly sit under umbrellas or in cars in the parking lot. However, when I go to the beach with my dog, she goes absolutely nuts. She loves playing on the sand, wading in the water, and especially playing fetch with anything she can find there (sticks, rocks, whathaveyou). This is all somewhat manageable if we are going with a purpose, but I’d like to take her for a day in which we also lounge calmly for part of it.

Does anyone else have this problem and how did you approach it?

I imagine she will eventually tire herself out with some exercise, but I still am skeptical of her ability to lay down calmly for any extended period of time. Even when she has in the past, she still whines and digs some out of frustration, I think. She is fine settling at home and somewhere less exciting, and if I bring training treats she might just be fixated on those the whole time. Maybe we are just not meant for beach days together, but I figured if there is a way to train this calmness, I want to try! Thank you!

Dream job or dream lifestyle?

Hi everyone,

I’m a lawyer in my mid-30s. I was offered a job I’ve wanted for a long time working for a government agency in DC. This is an on-site job, not remote.

I’m not naive to think the job is going to be perfect, but it’s a unique position that I think is particularly fitting for me and excites me much more than other jobs out there right now. It’s a place I could see myself staying for potentially even a whole career, but at least 5 years.

For most of my life, I’ve centered my goals around achieving the “dream” job or at least one that I’m passionate about. I’d apply and get the position, and the rest would follow. But, as I think many people in my generation have found, a job is not everything and the “perfect” job may not even exist; I have other values that are probably just as strong if not more so now. I have been living in a place I’ve loved living and could see myself staying long term. However, this place is about as far from DC as you can get. Things I like about living here is the access to the outdoors and importantly have a good community of friends here.

However, I hate my job and I feel like a shell of myself; it’s not ALL terrible but I didn’t spend the time and money for school to be doing this. I am unhappy in my work life and I really really want to switch to this type of work that I’ve been offered.

So my question: would you give up those lifestyle things for a job that you really want, and may not be an option again some day? I do like DC a lot and I’m sure I’ll find things that I find fulfilling, but I don’t feel quite ready to give up the things here yet. I didn’t expect this job opportunity to come so soon. My gut leans toward not taking it and trying to find a different job that will allow me to live my lifestyle, but those are few and far between. Meanwhile, rationally maybe I should take the job, but is that my lifelong career-focus taking over? I know it’s really only me who can make this decision, but wondering if any of you have dealt with similar situations or have thoughts. What would you do? Thank you!
