Considering a 5738/1R as my fourth Patek – thoughts?

Considering a 5738/1R as my fourth Patek – thoughts?

My current collection is a 5738P, 6196P and 5170G.

I’m considering adding the 5738/1R. I know that would mean owning two Golden Ellipses, but the rose gold bracelet and black dial make it feel like a very different watch from my platinum 5738P on a strap.

I also like the idea of having one Patek on a bracelet rather than four on straps.

Too much overlap, or a nice fourth watch to complete the collection?

Thinking about replacing my 5711 with a 5236P – what would you do?

My current collection is:

  • 5711/1A
  • 5170G
  • 5738P
  • 6196P

The 5711 was my first Patek back in 2023. At the time, I thought it was the watch to own.

But after spending more time in the Patek world and getting to know different references, I realized that I enjoy classic dress watches much more than sports models.

So I’m wondering if replacing the 5711 with a 5236P would make the collection more balanced and more true to my personal taste today.

Or would you keep the 5711 because it adds something unique that the other watches don’t?

Would love to hear your thoughts and what you would do in my situation.

[Question] From wristwatches to pocket watches: My first Patek Philippe Ref. 975J (1995)

After collecting Patek Philippe wristwatches for many years, I recently added my first Patek Philippe pocket watch, a Ref. 975J from 1995.

I have always admired Patek’s pocket watches, and I felt it was time to experience this part of Patek Philippe’s history. What attracted me most was the movement and its connection to the era before wristwatches became the dominant way of carrying time.

I find myself enjoying it in a different way from my wristwatches — winding it, opening the back, and simply appreciating the craftsmanship and finishing of the movement.

The watch came with its original presentation box, leather pouch, and a Gobbi Milano sales receipt from 1995, which adds a nice piece of history to the watch.

I would love to hear from other collectors: how do you enjoy your pocket watches, and are there any interesting details about the Ref. 975J that I should know?

Thanks!

Question about my Patek Philippe Ref. 975J (1995) movement

I recently acquired this Patek Philippe Ref. 975J Savonnette from 1995. The movement is marked 1–17/140.

I was wondering if this is based on the same movement family as the later Patek Philippe pocket watches Ref. 980 and Ref. 983, or if there were significant technical changes over the years?

I would appreciate any insights from collectors familiar with Patek Philippe pocket watches.

From wristwatches to pocket watches: My first Patek Philippe Ref. 975J (1995)

After collecting Patek Philippe wristwatches for many years, I finally decided to buy my first Patek Philippe pocket watch, a Ref. 975J from 1995.

I’ve always admired Patek’s pocket watches, and I felt it was time to experience this part of Patek Philippe’s history. What really attracted me was the movement and the connection to the era before wristwatches became the dominant form of personal timekeeping.

I’ve found myself spending far more time looking at the movement than I expected. There is something very relaxing about winding it and simply appreciating the craftsmanship and finishing.

The watch came with its original presentation box, leather pouch and the original sales receipt from Gobbi in Milan, which I think adds a nice part of its history.

I’d love to learn more about this reference from collectors who know these watches better than I do.

  • How uncommon is the Ref. 975J from the mid-1990s?
  • Are there any interesting facts or production details about this reference?
  • Are there dial, movement or case variations that collectors pay attention to?

I’d really appreciate any information or experiences from other Patek Philippe pocket watch owners and enthusiasts.

Thanks!

I’m trying to finalize what will likely be my 4th and final Patek.

Current collection:

  • Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A
  • Patek Philippe Chronograph 5170G
  • Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738P

The two options I’ve narrowed it down to are:

  • Calatrava 5196P
  • Calatrava 6196P

I’ll be honest — I keep coming back to the 5196P. It feels more understated, more balanced, and closer to how I actually want the collection to feel long-term.

The 6196P is clearly the more modern execution and has more presence, but I’m not sure that’s what I want at this point.

Would be really interested in hearing from people who’ve lived with either of them long-term — not just specs, but actual wrist experience and whether the choice still feels right after a while.
