Should I save and service? Found it on Market place.

Seller was asking 150 but than could not get the watch to work so I told them 50 as the case looks silver but not sure. I like to service / troubleshoot old watch movements so it will be a fun project? I don’t see a complete set for sale online so not sure what do you guys think? Thanks for any help or guidance.

Parts or repair

Found in an antique shop for $10. Case heavily damaged threads and all. Can’t open back. It is engraved on the back: US Army A C Navigation Master watch type a-9. Made by Longines Wittinauer.

More info on Waltham Broadway

This week I was given a pocket watch originally owned by my great great great grandfather. With some sleuthing, I’ve managed to discover it’s an AW Co Broadway series pocket watch produced between 1882 and 1883. It looks like it’s had some custom engraving on the back, possibly a train going across a bridge?

Does anyone know if there’s anything else significant about this particular line or style of watch? I’d like to document it as part of my research

Need help getting information on this/opening

Got a pocket watch today in a lot at an auction for $25. seems to be possibly from the company Langendorf? I don't have any idea why it says Xtragood or how to open the back. Very tightly sealed and no obvious way aside from maybe popping the backing off?

My first full service Elgin

Elgin grade 336, that had been sitting at an antique shop for years with no crystal. Just completed my first full disassemble service ever. Had to replace the crystal, a broken balance jewel, one tiny spring that holds a gear up, the minute hand, and 3 lost screws. Seems to be keeping time good, and that second-hand sweep is smoother than my Bulova.

Bought this beauty from a customer today.

I work for an estate buying company. Usually we buy people’s inherited jewelry, coins, watches, etc.

Usually, it’s nothing to write home about. We get gold pocket watches here and there, but this Waltham was too beautiful not to share.

Movement was made in 1937 houses in a 14k white gold Elgin Giant case.

The case is as mint as it comes and looks like it was never worn. The crown and ratchet wheels turn, but the mainspring won’t take a wind.

Elgin Grade 240

Hello.
I just inherited this beautiful pocket watch.
Thanks to a quick search on pockerwatch database I was able to determine it is an Elgin Grade 240
It says it dates about 1910
I am able to crank but do not hear any ticking and don’t understand how to move the arms.
Could you tell me more about this watch?
How do I know if it works?
Where should I go if I need it looked into?
Thank you

Inherited this pocket watch from my great-grandfather — can anyone help identify it?

This was my great-grandfather's — he was French, from Tours. I don't know anything about it and I'd love to learn more. Not expecting it to be the next lottery ticket, this is more to learn more about my great-grandfather who was an officer in the french army in WW2 and later on was a mechanic for the French State Train Company.

Any idea who made it, roughly how old it is, or what the movement is? There's a small maker's mark on one of the bridges (letters either side of an arrow) that I can't work out.

I would like to get this fixed, but would like confirmation that this is a real watch and not some fake.

Kind regards

Aonzo

First Time Buyer. Best man's gift

Hello all,

First time posting here, just looking for some information. Ive been thinking about getting my best friend a gift pocket watch as a way to ask him to be my best man. I thought it would be cool if he got to wear it during ceremony. Hes always been very into watches and watchmaking so it was the first thing I thought of. However, I dont know much about brands, and I fear asking him would spoil the suprise. Buying anything antique would be ideal but the last thing I want would be to gift him a money pit. Any recommendations for new brands or older makers that hold up well?

Appreciate any help!

Update: 300k+ curated watch movement parts, 25k+ calibers, and a fully rebuilt search/interchange platform

Quick update on the movement database project I’ve been building.

The main recent change is that the platform has been completely rewritten. This was the real 2026 project behind the scenes: rebuilding the core system so the database can scale properly, search more reliably, and handle parts/interchange data with fewer hidden assumptions.

A few headline numbers:

  • 300k+ curated part records
  • 25k+ calibers covered
  • 1,200+ automated tests written across the platform
  • rebuilt search logic
  • rewritten matching/interchange logic
  • cleaner links between calibers, parts, references, supersessions, and equivalents

🔍 Rewritten search and discovery
The search layer has been rebuilt from the ground up. The goal is to make it easier to find a caliber, part reference, manufacturer, base movement, or related family even when the input is incomplete, inconsistent, or uses a variant reference.

A lot of the work went into making searches less brittle, especially for old references, alternate formats, and manufacturer-specific numbering.

🔧 300k+ curated parts
The parts catalog is now much larger and more structured. It includes spare part references, related calibers, supersessions, stated equivalents, and interchange data where available.

For a part, the system can surface:

  • calibers it fits
  • stated equivalents
  • replacement / supersession chains
  • related references
  • possible compatible calibers

The goal is still the same: make it easier to move from a caliber to the parts that fit it, and from a part back to all compatible calibers.

♻️ Donor and interchange tooling
The shared-calibers / donor explorer is still one of the areas I’m most interested in getting feedback on.

From any caliber, it compares other calibers by shared parts and produces two scores:

  • Donor %: how much of the selected movement another caliber can supply.
  • Overlap %: how interchangeable the two movements appear overall.

Movements that appear to share the same base ébauche are flagged as likely same base. This is meant to help identify donor movements or possible interchange options when the exact part reference is hard to find.

⏱️ Movement specs before opening the watch
The caliber encyclopedia is still being expanded. Each caliber page collects practical specs such as dimensions, height, jewels, frequency, lift angle, escapement / winding / rotor type, shock protection, complications, and related families.

The idea is to have the basic technical context available before opening the watch or digging through scattered sheets.

🕵️ Movement identification
The identification tool is also still part of the project. It helps narrow candidates for unmarked movements using size, height, jewels, shape, frequency, complications, and physical traits such as import codes, balance support type, hairspring stud type, and stem release position.

🧪 Rebuilt with test coverage
One of the biggest invisible changes is testing. I wrote over 1,200 automated tests to cover the platform logic, search behavior, part relationships, supersession handling, permissions, and expected workflows.

That does not mean the data is perfect, but it should make the system much safer to change and easier to improve without breaking existing behavior.

👥 Community corrections
The data is still incomplete, and I expect mistakes, especially around parts and interchangeability.

I’d especially appreciate feedback from watchmakers, parts suppliers, and anyone who works with donor movements on things like:

  • incorrect equivalents
  • broken or questionable supersession chains
  • missing calibers or variants
  • donor matches that do not make sense in practice
  • parts linked to the wrong caliber
  • manufacturer-specific reference numbers that are ambiguous, duplicated, or incorrectly normalized

The encyclopedia/spec side is open to browse. Some of the deeper interchange tools are still limited while I validate the data, but the main reason I’m posting is to get technical feedback, corrections, and real-world edge cases rather than to promote the project.

At this stage, the most useful feedback is not “nice project,” but corrections: places where the data disagrees with bench experience, parts books, supplier references, or real donor-movement behavior.

Does anyone know this watch?

Hi everyone,

I recently found this watch on the market, and I can't find either the caliber or the model.

I was more curious about the movement.

For proper service, does anyone have some tips to give me?

Every information about this watch would be appreciated.

Thanks

Another pocket Rolex get new life in my workshop

Spent a week to find new balance staff and restore dial to nearly mint. It is not marriage! Lugs welded.

u/Healthy_Cucumber_878 — 3 days ago

My Great Uncle’s 100yo Illinois

Luckily, I was able to rescue this watch from a dusty box full of Limoge miniatures (odd). It was sealed in a glass dome which I think did a decent job preserving it. The dial shows damage and history of some repair but I kept it wound over 24hrs and it seems to keep perfect time.

I popped the case back and observed what seems like signatures from watchmakers who serviced it?

Since I have limited knowledge of pieces like this, I’d be grateful to get more information on this watch and maybe some tips to maintain it as I hope to keep it running nicely. I do plan on bringing it to the horologist in town when I’ve got the time and money. How many times is appropriate to wind a watch like this?

ID Request: Swiss-Made for German Market, Bought in Belgrade, Early 1900s?

Family heirloom that we're trying to identify. I've done some research and found that it is in fact authentic gold from the Squirrel stamps, and that the smaller one means it was made for the German market. The watch no longer has its hands, and the face is cracked. Haven't taken it to a jeweler or watch/clock shop yet, and would love to identify a maker if possible to see if it would be feasible to fix. The original cardboard box it was bought in indicates it was bought from a jewelry shop in Belgrade from a man named Antonije Rexor. Any information would be much appreciated!
