Giving up on attending school for now

So today was his first day back in 4 weeks (he had the last two weeks off his school term and then the last two weeks have been school holidays). Absolutely no luck - even drove him there and the wellbeing officer and house leader tried, no go.

I really can't do this for the next 10 weeks so we're going to have to try him on their in school program which is mostly online school.

He's started with a psych, he's been on lexapro for a few weeks (seen some improvement), there's only so much I can do I think.

He's in year 9 and is 15.

The school was hesitant to put him on this program but I think it's the best idea for now.

Prescribed medication - feedback ?

Hey all,

I have a lot of health anxiety and am very sensitive to my body's sensations.

I've been prescribed Candesartan cilexetil 8 mg, because my BP has been high for the last few years.

Has anyone had any GOOD experiences taking these meds? I've already read too many bad ones so please don't reply.

Teenager and school refusal

My 15 year old is really struggling with school refusal and I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

He missed all of last week. There have been various reasons, mainly feeling sick/stomach issues, headaches and anxiety around certain things at school. He kept saying Monday would be easier because it was a fresh week, so I was really hoping we'd get him back today.

This morning he woke up saying he felt sick and didn't want to go. I managed to get him up and into the shower and kept everything really calm. I told him he didn't have to manage a whole day and asked if he could just go for some of it. I didn't yell or lose it, which I have before, and we talked about it calmly, but in the end he still wouldn't go.

What worries me most is that he's now saying he probably won't go tomorrow either. I work later in the week, so I'm starting to feel like we're getting into a cycle where one missed day becomes another missed week.

I've called the school and we have a meeting with them this afternoon to try to work out a plan. They'd like him to come but have said I can still go without him if I can't get him there.

He's not a kid who just doesn't care about school or whose behaviour is generally out of control. He seems genuinely unable to make himself go at the moment, even when the night before he talks as though he's expecting to go. He often feels physically sick when it comes time to actually do it.

I'm getting really stressed because I don't know how much to push. I don't want to make the anxiety worse or turn every morning into a screaming match, but I'm also really worried that allowing him to stay home is reinforcing the avoidance and making returning harder.

Has anyone been through this with a teenager and actually got them attending normally again? What helped? At what point did you involve a psychologist/GP or consider anxiety medication? I'd especially love to hear from parents whose kids came out the other side of this because right now it feels pretty terrible.

24 hour monitoring question

Hi all,

My BP has been high since I got covid but I'm also extremely anxious taking it so it goes nutso at the docs.

My question is, do you HAVE to do the 24 hour monitor thing before you can be given meds or can I just get some meds without that?

I really don't want to do it as I know it'll make me extremely anxious anyway and my arm bruises jjust from taking it a few times, let alone all day!

Please be kind as I've just spent the morning crying.

My son is 15 and has some chronic constipation issues so has missed a lot of school. I've turned myself inside out to fix things sometimes but there's only so much I can do.

We end up fighting a LOT of school mornings. For eg, he was in the toilet today until 9.40, so missed the bus and I offered to drive him. But he wants to go on his terms, and refused to go until 'snack' time so he didn't have to go to his Foods class midway through it.

I just had had enough and we ended up fighting for an hour. We have both verbalised it is effecting our relationship.

I don't know where the lines are anymore, I can't force him to go, and I don't want to constantly resort to taking things away from him and growing resentment.

His viewpoint was that I should just have let him go at snack time and then we wouldn't have had an hour long fight.

This is mostly all we fight about, overall we have a good relationship but sometimes I think I can't emotionally regulate about this stuff and unload my frustrations about him, onto him.
