Trying to start freelancing on the side as a KMP developer – how do you build a network without references?
Hi everyone,
I’m a Kotlin Multiplatform developer in a full-time position. Experience with native Android development, KMP/CMP, and by now a bit of Swift due to integrations into the host apps of our features.
I want to try getting into freelancing on the side to become more independent. For now, I want to explore it as a side business before going all-in.
I’ve read a book about freelancing and also have indirect contact with a freelancing coach. A lot of it sounds logical, but putting it into practice is naturally more concrete in theory than in reality.
Specific questions for you:
- How did you land your first clients when you didn’t have any freelance references yet?
- Cold calling seems like the wrong approach to start with, to me – but is that really true, or am I underestimating it?
- Are there any specific channels (Slack, Discord, meetups) in the Kotlin/KMP niche that are worth it for getting started?
- Would you rather rely on platforms (e.g. Malt, Freelancermap) or go through your own network first?
Looking forward to hearing your experiences, including any “I would have done that differently” lessons.
