Our newest edition to Rook City Comics x Manga is Kodiak, written by Travis Gibb. We wanted to expand our universe into other creators.

About 2 years ago, my husband would stay up after work, writing pages, while everyone else slept. No audience or anything yet.

No guarantee anyone would ever care. Just this stubborn belief that one day he could tell stories for a living.

We’ve had failed projects, canceled ideas, burnout, and moments where we almost gave up completely. There were nights we questioned if it was irresponsible to keep chasing this instead of “realistic” goals. We have since then made Haven after his uncle who passed with cancer and Sketch Knight that came with his love for Full Metal Alchemist and Spider Man. Now publishing others comics! A great story between a retired vigilante and his daughter.

Since this is the final week, I wanted to ask something more direct

When you see a new indie superhero universe, what actually makes you follow it past the first entry?

I mean what keeps you there when it’s not Marvel/DC level yet.

Kodiak is the latest comic in our indie superhero universe of

Rook City Comics x Manga

This one ended up shaping the world way more than we expected!

What started as separate stories is slowly turning into a connected universe. You get to see multiple stories being told around the SAME timeline.

Kodiak pushed that idea the hardest so far.

This isn’t a chosen one saves the world kind of story.. It’s more like.. a vigilante can leave his past behind but his past won't let him go and how that affects the people around them before they even understand it themselves.

Visually and tonally, each series has been evolving into its own lane

Sketch Knight → idea driven, chaotic, creative power

Creating out of a Sketch Book

Haven → quieter, atmospheric, controlled tension, intense action

Kodiak → raw, emotional, and unpredictable

We didn’t plan everything upfront, the universe is forming as we build each story, which has been both exciting and new and terrifying to see a community come together to support.

Since this is the final week, I wanted to ask something more direct

When you see a new indie superhero universe, what actually makes you follow it past the first entry?

I mean what keeps you there when it’s not Marvel/DC level yet.

Also, if anyone’s been following along, this is the last chance to catch Kodiak during its launch window we’ll be shifting focus into the next phase of the universe after this and greatly appreciate everyone who has come on the journey and continues with us!

just as a reader or consumer?

There’s so much out there already, and most of us already follow at least one established universe.

So when something new shows up, what makes you care enough to stick with it?

I’m asking because we’ve been building a small indie universe across a few stories on kickstarter (Haven, Sketch Knight, and now Kodiak), and we’re trying to figure out what matters most to those who enjoy superheroes

Right now we’re focusing on stories that stand on their own first, a shared world that connects slowly over time, and powers tied more to internal struggles than traditional “hero vs villain” setups.
