Guidance on introducing 4 month old kitten to 7 year old lab.

Hey everyone! Me and my wife adopted a cat two weeks ago and it’s been wonderful. I grew up with cats and am super excited to finally have adopted my own. It’s been hectic, but it’s been worth it and some.

My question today is about the relationship between the cat and our 7 year old yellow lab. We were prepared to do long, slow introductions, but both pets have been headstrong on wanting to see / investigate the other. We did scent swapping and treats on opposite sides of the doors for the first week. This past week we did eye to eye with a barrier in between the dog and him while the cat was in his home base (my office).

The first time the dog was very curious, but the second and third times he listened to every command and has been the careful one after a few hisses and swipe lol. We’ve now successfully done 2-3 short sessions where the dog is leashed and they both get treats at the same time next to each other. They both are very food driven.

Onto my question. We have a pet gate at the bottom of our stairs and the past few times, the cat will come to the gate, stick his paws through, want to get out, etc. If the dog starts to get closer though, he wants to take pop shots at the dog. It’s like he’s baiting him to get closer so he can do it lol. All the dog wants to do is sniff the little guy.

Last night the cat ended up jumping the gate and doing the witch cat side dance / run until he was about 3-4 feet from the dog at which point I separated them since I didn’t like the vibe. I was fully expecting a shy / timid cat, not one that seems to want to keep approaching the dog! How should I continue to train these two and get the cat to mellow out around the dog? He’s obviously young, but I’d like to do what I can to foster a healthy relationship.

I think it’s good progress for only two weeks in though and I am optimistic! Sorry for the wall of text, just want to make sure we’re on the right path.

UPDATE: How do you peacefully coexist with a neighbor who seems to thrive on conflict?

Hello everyone, I am back again. My original post had quiet a few comments on it, so I figured I would update this sub on the latest encounter we had for the sake of entertainment. You can find the original thread here.

Last Tuesday, a week exactly after the first encounter, our neighbor's husband decided to come over. Both times have been while I am at work and my wife is home (starting to think it is not a coincidence). I've been told by a few other neighbors that he is usually the one to try and smooth things over, but this wasn't my experience unfortunately. I will say, he was less aggressive than his wife.

He began by warning us not to let the dog into the backyard because his wife and dog had gotten ticks on them. He then proceeded to basically blame the ticks in THEIR yard on us because according to him they NEVER dealt with ticks until "someone" cut the trees down because that is where "they live" lol. His wife even got one AS she stopped the contractor the day of (thanks for admitting that on camera).

He then said he would need to see our property....lines.....map.....where the boundaries are (he didn't know what to say). Again, thanks for admitting you don't even know where the property line is... My wife finally was able to give him our lawyer's card and tell him if they needed that or anything else they could contact their office. He said thanks and that he would do that. After my wife shut the door, he proceeded to miss step and tumble off of the sidewalk (it is slightly slopped with pinestraw) onto our driveway. Thankfully he was able to get up and walk off. You can’t make it up at this point though, we are officially in looney toons territory with this whole situation.

So, here we are. This will be week three since the original interaction (other than her blowing up the day of the work). We will see if they decide to call the lawyer, or try to come over again. If they do the door is not getting answered and they’re being asked to leave and not come back. I wish I could post the properties, etc just so everyone could see how dumb this is. Anxiety has been better, but the feeling of being watched / what's next, does stink. So, there's the update. Hopefully NOT to be continued aha.

How do you peacefully coexist with a neighbor who seems to thrive on conflict?

Hey everyone, not really looking for legal advice, just need to vent and get some input.

My wife and I bought our house about a year ago, and we've tried to be good, quiet neighbors, but we've run into a problem with one neighbor, and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with her long term. About a month ago I hired a licensed and insured contractor to do some forestry mulching in our wooded backyard. Before he started, I walked the property line with him myself and showed him the survey markers in each corner that he needed to see.

While he was working, our neighbor came out yelling that he was on her property. She yelled at him over and over again while he tried to tell her he was not on her property. I then went down to make sure everything was okay and she she proceeded to do the same to me until she finally went back inside because the noise was to loud to hear each other. I did have the contractor send me a factual chain of events email last week.

It's been quiet for the past 3 weeks, but out of nowhere, she started back up again. She tried telling my wife while she was out walking the dog that we still needed to sit down and talk about "the damages". Later that same day she showed up at our front door demanding my homeowner's insurance info and my contractor's name and address. She's claiming there's a "path" to our backyard from her woods now and that debris is going to wash into her yard. Nothing was hit on her property and at the very worst, the contractor got about 2 feet of some mulch on some dirt on her side in the woods. She capped it off by saying if we plan on doing nothing, she'd take legal action.

I've documented everything and actually talked to an attorney. The attorney told me to not engage with her and if she approaches us again, I just give her the name and number of the attorney since she threatened legal action. After speaking with a few of our other neighbors, they've told us that they've had their own run-ins with this couple over the years. Disputes, threats, neighborhood drama, and my main neighbor had to file a no contact order years ago. Just makes the whole thing seems like it was a matter of when not if.

The whole thing has been super anxiety inducing. It makes me feel like i DID do something wrong when we haven't. I am going to just have to follow the advice of the attorney, but how do you all learn to deal with people like this? I do not want to let this neighbor take up so much space in my head, it is very frustrating, especially as young first time homeowners that have tried to be good neighbors. So for those of you who've lived next to somebody like this, how do you handle it long term? Is there anything else you would do if you were me? I really just needed to get a sanity check here.

EDIT: Thanks for all the comments everyone. I appreciate the kind words and advice.

EDIT 2: Also for the laugh factor, she has done the same thing to the other neighbor when the neighbor was repairing their well. She said the well was causing water to pool in her yard so she told her she needed their insurance. Crazy!
