Our talks:
*****
**Title**: John Mellencamp And Your Pelvic Floor Walk Into A Bar...When Sex Hurts, And It's NOT So Good.
**Blurb**: Painful sex: common, normalized, and wildly misunderstood. This talk explores the role of pelvic floor tension, the disconnect between arousal and pain, and the cultural narratives that keep people stuck. Lindsay unpacks what's actually going on in the body, why "just push through it" is terrible advice, and how we got here in the first place. Come for the beer, stay for the knowledge nuggets and mild outrage.
**Bio**: Lindsay Thorsen is a Doctor of Physical Therapy specializing in pelvic floor physical therapy-think physical therapy for your private parts-and a sex educator on a mission to teach what your health class definitely skipped. After realizing most of her patients didn't understand how their bodies work, she created Sex and Sensibility, where science and pleasure come together (you're welcome lol). She also hosts Albuquerque's first sex trivia night-and is back for her third Nerd Nite, so apparently she's hard to get rid of-because nothing says "community education" like learning about orgasms over a drink, amirite? Lindsay is known for blending anatomy, neuroscience, and humor to make sex education approachable, empowering, and actually fun.

*****
**Title**: Satanic Panic! At the Disco
**Blurb**: Satan isn't in the Bible. At least, not the Satan you're probably thinking of. So, where did the red-horned, shape-shifting, Ruler of Hell and its armies image of The Devil come from?
Join me on a Pilgrimage-a-la-Dante through the weird origins of this notorious character who has haunted and influenced western politics and culture for centuries.
**Bio**: Mary Reynolds is a ninth generation Tennesseean, a rock-climber, and an enjoyer of weird medieval art. She generally disagrees that the heat being "a dry heat" makes any difference at all and really wants to show you a picture of her Australian Shepherd. She got her bachelors in Political Science in 2017 from the University of Tennessee and then a graduate degree in Theology in 2021. After spending her late twenties as a Presbyterian (PCUSA) pastor in snowy Montana, she currently works as the Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator for Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains, Refugee and Asylee Services.

*****
**Title**: Fostering Kittens!
**Blurb**: Every year I take kittens and moms and babies from the Albuquerque animal welfare shelter and foster them at my home and then facilitate finding their adoption. It is heartbreaking and rewarding and a lot of fun. Everything from bottle babies to medical cases to just one but need to get a little bit fatter and a little bit more friendly.
**Bio**: Jessi Adkins is a teacher, and she cares for tiny humans all day. She also likes to care for tiny kittens. She has been volunteering for the city of Albuquerque for 15 years doing this and have cat care and cat experience for over 39 and 3/4 years.

We're back for our NNABQ May show! After a little break, we're bringing you an almost-summer hit with something for everyone, whether you're an animator, a programmer, a polio researcher, or a just-plain-nerd.

See our Facebook event here!

When: Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 7:00 PM Where: Green Jeans Food Hall

Talk 1 — Pooja Sheevam Vaccines and Polio

Vaccines have saved millions of lives—but skepticism about them isn’t new. We’ll trace back the history of vaccine resistance to as early as 1950. From early smallpox protests to modern anti-vax movements, we will explore when cultural narratives shaped what people believe about science, and how mistrust can be developed towards institutions. But it’s not all doom and gloom: we’ll also spotlight an unlikely hero in the fight for global health—your grandparent's local Rotary Club. Learn how a group better known for lunch meetings for retired folks helped lead one of the most ambitious public health campaigns in history.

Talk 2 — Charles Cantu The 12 Principles of Animation

The Twelve Principles of Animation are a guide to creating believeable animation that delivers the illusion of life. They are based on the work of traditional Disney animators, who pioneered their use in the 1930s. Every animator must understand each of these principles, consider how they should be used in their own work. When followed, they help create believable movement and action, inform us of the character and story, and help make a piece of animated art memorable.

Talk 3 — Devin Hight The Hidden Software That Makes Supply Chains Look Easy

When most people think about supply chains, they picture ships, trucks, warehouses, and boxes. What they usually do not see is the huge amount of software quietly making all of that look simple. This (ideally) is a behind-the-scenes look at the systems that decide where products ship from, how deliveries get routed, why tracking pages are often a story (but actually more of an idea) than a live truth feed, and how many different pieces of software can touch a single order before it reaches your door. Hopefully it will be approachable look at the weird, messy, invisible software world behind modern commerce.
