Ja’Kobi Gillespie gas

Looks like a hidden gem, could claw his way into the rotation sooner than expected…

Gillespie in college:

  • 36 3P%, 10 3PA/100, .46 3Pr
  • 35% on PU3s, 37% of 3PM unassisted
  • 2.2 A/TO ratio, 13.8 TOV%
  • 3.7 STL/100, 3.3 STL%

Jacks up 3s, makes em at a good rate given how they’re generated, and forces/limits TOVs. All things the team could use a bit more of.

Numbers also similar to FVV’s, in college and in the NBA...both are about 6’0, 190lbs too.

Not expecting a SRP to be an All Star or championship team starter but he’s intriguing.

Julian Champagnie is a patriot and should remain a starter.

One of the most underrated players itl and I mean actually underrated, not one of those gimmicky ass ”underrated“ players that everyone recognizes like Trey Murphy or Herb Jones lol.

BW legit got a starting-level wing for a contender off the buyout market…wings are the most volatile archetype so this just adds more distance to such a home-run of a signing.

Champagnie’s historical impact:

  • He boosts Wemby lineups—Wemby is +7 in 2700 mins w/Champagnie and just +2 in 2300 mins w/o him.
  • 84-75 as a starter all time, including 51-17 last year (36-58 as a reserve for reference)
  • 81st in 3Y RAPM
  • +5.9 on/off swing since 2024

He’s also the best 3PT shooter on the Spurs by far; last year, he was in the upper 25th percentile in 3PA/100, 3Pr, 3P rTS%, and 3P%.

Keeping a T100 player in the league for an annual sub 10% cap hit is amazing value.

Wemby creation playtypes

Nearly 30% of Wemby’s career offensive possessions have been self created (iso, postup, PnR ball handler) yet he averages less than 0.9 PPP on those plays on negative rTS

#s per nbarapm.com btw.

Simply put he’s not a good creator. Goes without saying that it’s not a knock on him because he’s a 7’5 center lol but still. He’s not good at it and it shouldn’t make up 30% of his plays.

Needs more ”big man“ plays like cuts, rolls, putbacks, transition, etc. More spot-up shots too

More Wemby transition plays

He scores 1.18 PPP in transition with a 5.6% rTS (on par with Giannis’ marks) yet only 16.7% of his total career offensive possessions have come in transition…imo it should be closer to 25%.

In a straight line, he’s probably faster than every big man itl sans Giannis and is a solid ball handler in the open court too…at least for a 7’5” guy.

It just feels like they’re leaving a lot of meat on the bone by not having him just get the rebound and go coast to coast.

He’s not a good creator (yet? who knows) despite almost 29% of his career possessions boiling down to those playtypes (iso, postups, PnR).

New assistant lead Billy Donovan loves pace and space tho (Bulls T2 in transition volume/pace with Giddey) so I wouldn’t be surprised if he has Wemby in these situations more and more.

Tecumseh’s dream/confederacy…thoughts on it?

If you’re unfamiliar, Tecumseh‘s goal was to unite all the Indigenous American tribes into one big nation to combat the colonialists

This “unification” was more like an alliance/truce between local tribes rather than an actual merger

But still, the vision was there. Thoughts on it? Ik we place great sanctity and value in each individual tribe’s traditions but historically, that meant warfare amongst ourselves…

Might fck around and win 65+ tbh

Last year, 6 of the team’s top 10 players missed a combined 80+ games…reduce that by even 25% and the W-L looks a teeny bit different imo.

They got a new assistant coach w a philosophy that fits the team’s personnel like a glove, added hella frontcourt depth, and retained a finals core that won 60+ games on top of all that…

The west as a whole hasn’t gotten much better, if at all. Ik the new lotto odds will make teams try harder but that doesn’t mean the rank and file of the league will automatically hang with the Spurs

60 wins should the O/U imo. It’ll be straight belt 2 ass all season.

Harris an underrated signing

The most underrated offseason move imo. He’s been in the 80th percentile for many multiyear metrics (Ben Taylor’s stats, RAPM, EPM)…and they got him for a steal of a deal.

Can create his own shots, turnover averse, solid 3PT shooter (doesn’t take nearly enough 3s imo), great on the glass for a wing, and is a physical defender who competes at the very least.

Great vibes guy from what I heard and has hella experience (1K+ games and five game 7s played) so he should be a good presence too.

Spurs never play all 3 of their guards simultaneously and they stagger Wemby/Kornet so having a guy who can a bit of everything means he can play in any lineup tbh.

Boston is still very much a contender and will likely win 55+ games

Boston is 47-10 w/o JB since 2023 so the trade didn’t close their window shut at all…

Boston was 43-23 with JB & no Tatum…now they’re swapping JB for Tatum + adding PG

Tatum + PG > just JB (crazy take right?)

D White struggled last year shooting the ball, having Tatum back boosts him a ton: his 3p% & his ts go up by 6% next to Tatum the last 3 szns

Pritchard averages 21-5-6 per75 w/o JB since 2024, up from 17-5-5 per75 with him

They also signed Mitchell Robinson, best offensive rebounder in the league
