The strange exists at the edge of understanding. It may be unfamiliar, uncanny, absurd, beautiful, unsettling, or unexpectedly ordinary. It is the feeling that something does not fit neatly within our existing categories.

What's a Zine? Why Should I Care?

A zine exists because someone decided it should. ↓

The tradition runs through science fiction fan communities in the 1930s, punk culture in the 1970s, and riot grrrl in the 1990s. Zines have historically been where the most vital creative voices appeared first, not because the format was prestigious, but because it was accessible. No gatekeepers. No corporate infrastructure. Just intention and the will to follow through.

The Violet Index is a zine. That's a deliberate choice. We operate outside the logic that measures a publication's value by circulation numbers or advertiser relationships.

Every issue is an artifact. Made carefully. For people who find their way to it. A copy of each issue is donated to the Denver Zine Library, because the tradition deserves to be documented.

Submissions open August 1. Visual art and writing welcome. No AI. Link in bio.

Welcome to The Violet Index.

Welcome to The Violet Index.

We’re a creative publishing studio making small, curated quarterly zines built around a single idea: curiosity is a form of design.

Each issue brings together writers and visual artists to explore a shared theme—experimenting, collaborating, and building something that lives somewhere between magazine and artifact.

If you’re someone who collects ideas, lingers on visuals, or enjoys work that doesn’t resolve too quickly, you’ll probably feel at home here.

[Organization] The Violet Index

Hi there,

I just started a digital zine publishing studio called The Violet Index that I need some help with. We produce themed zines as artifacts of visual and literary collaboration and sell them as downloads. It's still in it's infancy and I'm just curious if anyone has done anything similar that I can learn from.

The Violet Index

Hi there,

I've started a themed quarterly digital zine, and I wanted to know if anyone else has done this. I'm hoping for someone I can use to bounce ideas off of. My big question, I suppose, is how to drum up excitement in anticipation of us launching our first call for submission. Thanks for any advice!

The Violet Index

We make a quarterly digital zine. Themed, collaborative, somewhere between a magazine and an artifact. Our upcoming inaugural issue is planned for later this year. If you'd be interested in helping us build from the ground up, please reach out here or via socials.
