Can you take on bad contracts to acquire picks?

(FHM 12 noob here.)

Teams do it all the time in real life, where if you have cap space you can take on bad contracts with picks attached to them. Does the AI in game ever do that? And how do you find those players in the game? I have plenty of cap space this season and am trying to figure out how to build for the future. But when I'm looking at the trading block, every team seems to want assets back for every player listed, including some awful contracts.

Athletic Deep Dives on Stenberg and Reid

The Athletic did a couple deep dives on who the Leafs should draft at 1OA, and while a bit of it is from the Leafs point of view, there's a bunch of good info in there. I put some quotes here but the articles are free links (may need an account, not sure)

Stenberg

> Sjöström saw those veteran teammates indeed let Stenberg know what they thought of him: they stayed late after practices to work with him, and were in awe of his skill. Conversations off the ice increased. They pushed him into greater responsibilities on the ice.

> “That’s a sign: if you bring the work every day and you’re humble, our older guys took a liking to (Stenberg),”

> Stenberg is the most NHL-ready player in the draft. His offensive instincts are dynamic and game-changing. His pro traits should lead him to landing top-six minutes immediately and staying there.

Reid

> "every day he came in with a smile on his face and just wanted more. More video, a tougher assignment... he’s a sponge. He wants to please his coaching staff, he want to be there for his teammates, but it’s the way he can just elevate himself and putting in that work that’s been really impressive.”"

> the way Reid’s game and development took off this season suggests he might be at the beginning of a special trajectory as a two-way, minutes-munching, right-shot defenceman who can lead a blue line for years

> “With Chase, every year he’s been able to take another huge leap. And it’s not because he’s been far off, but even with his physical maturity, which is still coming, what excites me the most is every time you fast-forward six months, he’s taken huge steps.”

> How often does any NHL team get a chance to tick so many boxes in a player with franchise defenceman upside?
